gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who ("Special stew")
Happy Monday.

Apparently my 1000th journal entry passed without much fanfare a couple of entries ago. Go me! Also, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] dincrest!

Also, I am zesting a lemon to make buccellatti, and man, my fingers smell totally awesome. Lemony fresh and zestily sweet! Hopefully the cake will taste as good. I'm making it because [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis, [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic and [livejournal.com profile] bshippotemkin are coming over for dinner, and I'd like to have dessert for them as well. :D

The other day I saw Saved! at Judith's...man, but is that a funny movie. Jena Malone was good, and Mandy Moore kind of rocked in it. Also, Macaulay Culkin seems halfway normal and slightly well-adjusted now! :O

Let's Positive Linking!
- Hott lesbo Victorian porn. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Not worksafe, obviously (it's PORN); also has minor bestiality (so that's why those Victorian ladies all had lapdogs!), subliminal wangs everywhere, unorthodox use of a sundial, and a PENIS-SNAIL. (Those wacky Victorians.) Seriously, how can things get awesomer than a penis-snail? XD
- AHHHHH BIZARRE FRENCH AIDS AWARENESS AD WTF! (From [livejournal.com profile] naruto_nerd; quite probably not worksafe.) I mean, I understand the meaning behind it, and it's certainly memorable, but still, wtf. Though at least they ALLOW advertising for safe sex there...I don't think I've ever seen a TV commercial advocating it here.
- If y'all haven't seen Stephen Colbert's speech at the White House press correspondent dinner/lunch/thing, you should. It's hilarious, though it says something about our government that, like [livejournal.com profile] bshippotemkin, my first response was worry for Colbert's well-being. XD

Edit: Apparently the porn entry has been deleted. And I did not save any of it to my HD to show you guys. I'm gonna have to hunt it down again now, aren't I? D:

Baking dorkery )

As I was finishing up my bread, [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis and [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic called to see if I wanted to go to dinner with them. So we had a nice dinner at a Chinese restaurant and then Travis showed me The Neverending Story (which, I hesitate to admit, I had never seen). It was actually pretty good, especially compared to the somewhat similar Mirrormask that we watched last night (which, while visually striking, failed to impress me story- and writing-wise).

And more baking dorkery, or, Let them eat cake )

Anyway, that's probably enough baking dorkery for one entry. On to other varieties of dorkery!

As some (nay, most) of you already know, Nintendo has officially named their new console (formerly codenamed Revolution): the Wii. Now, see, a lot of people are making cracks about the name, but honestly I think they're just taking the piss. >D

(More about the Wii, if you're interested.)

Also, here's a great otakukin vs. otherkin wank: "We are otakin, hear us roar!" For those of you who are unfamiliar with ota(ku)kin/otherkin, let me give you a brief primer. You know furries, right? Well, otherkin are kind of like furries, only further out there; they believe that their soul is that of a wolf/fox/walrus/pixie/dragon/whatever. Otakukin are a step further- they're like otherkin, but instead of believing their souls are reincarnated animals/fairies, they believe their souls are reincarnated fictional characters. (So, like, Sailor Moon or Sesshoumaru.)

I mostly like this wank for the fact that people who think they're dragons or otters are heaping contempt on people who think they're Sailor Moon or Neo. I'm not sure whether it's amusing because it's a pot-kettle thing, or because they're like, "dude, we believe we're reincarnated animals, and that's too far out even for US." XD

Let's Positive Linking!
- Apparently Lestat: the Musical sucks. Though vampire musicals are not NECESSARILY bad, as the article argues. After all, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode is still one of the niftiest things EVAR.
- Porn stars' acting skills tested on West End. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Debbie Does Mrs. Warren's Profession?
- VD is for Everybody! It's so creepily cheerful. D:
- C for Cookie. (From [livejournal.com profile] pekeana.) Sesame Street as envisioned by Alan Moore. XD

Wow, I've got far too many links I've been saving up over the past week to post them all in three- to six-link increments in entries about other things. So once again, in lieu of actual content, have a hefty meal of links instead!

But before I get into the linkspam, happy (belated) birthday to [livejournal.com profile] aurianrose! (I started writing this entry yesterday, but somehow it didn't get finished till today...urk.)

Let's Positive Linking, Ginormous Edition!
- Poster Child. This is a group that makes "?" blocks from the Mario games (complete with power-ups inside, often!). Pretty cool, but recently several teenaged girls were arrested in Ravenna, Ohio...because apparently the police thought the boxes were bombs and that these teenage girls were a bunch of Miyamoto-loving terrorists on a jihad against Bumfuck, Ohio. GOD SO DEEPLY, DEEPLY STUPID. It turns out they won't be prosecuted, but there's still a very definite tone of disapproval in the police statement. WTF, the police should be the ones being forced to make the apology, not the other way round! After all, you can't convince me that NONE of these policemen played Mario as kids and knew what this about. >_<
- Missouri makes the news again, this time for a Grain Valley couple who claims to have sextuplets, but it turns out to be a hoax. God love the Independence area.
- Knitted roast dinner. (From [livejournal.com profile] pirochan.) :D~~~
- Department of Homeland Security gets "F" for online...well, security. I know I feel better that we're spending so many billions on protecting America from the EVIL EVIL TERRARISTS.
- An interesting story on a transgender woman and her problems with World of Warcraft's policies. (From [livejournal.com profile] tanzy.) The woman definitely has a valid complaint...seriously, banning people for nonderogatory remarks about sexuality while everyone on the chat channels is all "LOL N00B FAG" is just stupid.
- AUGH THE HYPOCRISY. At least these people aren't reproducing.
- Butt-sexiness now scientifically determined. Why am I not surprised that Kylie Minogue scored so highly on the bottom test? XD
- Men who have sex with dolls. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
After a last attempt with a dating agency, Malcolm came across RealDolls online. 'I bought Rebecca a few months ago with the money left from my redundancy payment,' he recalls. 'In my imagination, she's 14 and earns pocket money by working in her school library. 'She's very important to me,' he continues. 'I feel affection for her which goes beyond sexual desire.'
...EEEK.
- Voicesvoicesvoices! (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) The crop circles are sadly the tamest of the conspiracy theories he subscribes to.
- Having picked up the new Anita Blake "novel" at the library for the purpose of amusement masochistically weeping at the porny wreck that a once-beloved series has become, this comparison of the novels to an early Squaresoft RPG (complete with the phrase "Random Sex Encounter") deeply amuses me. XD
- Alison Jackson. (Site slightly not worksafe; for bare "Beckham" butt, "Cherie Blair" nip slip, and "Prince William" trying on royal robes naked.) An awesome British photographer who works with celebrity lookalikes to stage shots that aren't real but we all know in our heart of hearts probably could be. She did the cover of this month's New York, with Brangelina carrying their baby (which, of course, has yet to be born) in order to make fun of the celebrity craze. I want her book of photos so bad, it looks AWESOME.
- Trailer for Studio Ghibli's next movie adapted from a beloved children's fantasy book, Tales from Earthsea (based on Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea books). Let's hope it's a little better as a movie than Howl (which was beautifully animated, but mystifying if you hadn't read the book even though it diverged very very drastically from said book).
- Gerard Butler (a.k.a. the Phantom of the Opera in the movie) has some scary, scary fans.
Another voice pipes up. "I have a Gerry doll. It's a mannequin really, but it's full-size and anatomically correct." Kelly's friend Paulette Comstock, who hails from Wisconsin, moves closer. She wears a T-shirt featuring several photographs of Butler. Her hair is a shock of dark cherry, framing piercing pale green eyes. The look could be bottled: menopausal intensity. "We dress him up too, " she says with a wink. "It's great fun. Although it can get out of hand. You ever tried cleaning up chocolate spread?"
EEEK again. (What is it with the RealDolls today? D:)
- Snack Food Zodiac. I am a Ding-Dong. D:
- Founder of Greenpeace argues that environmentalists being stupid. This is certainly thought-provoking, and I've certainly been all about the GMO foods (dammit, I really want to try grapples one of these days!).
- Lance Bass quite possibly gay. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) SHOCK. At least it makes him that much more appropriate for Sephiroth. XD
- Housefly gets glasses. (From [livejournal.com profile] enkiae.) Some scientists clearly have far too much time on their hands. Still, AWESOME.
- Good procrastination advice. (From...someone. [livejournal.com profile] rathershady?) It'll certainly come in handy over the next couple weeks!
- Strange Things are Afoot at the Circle K. Or, The Blog of That Lolicon Oklahoma Cannibal Killer. He's apparently a fanboy, eep. (For the record, his favorite Final Fantasy game is IV, which makes me feel a lot better that I vastly preferred VI.) But he seems so normal from his blog! (In fact, it's not all that unlike mine!) In fact, I'm fairly certain I've visited that blog before (or at least one with that title). Eep, I hope I don't turn into a lolicon cannibal killer. D:
Also, creepily, his last post was after he killed that ten-year-old girl but before the body was found. D:
- Rosa Parks posthumously pardoned by Alabama. I'm not sure what offends me more, that they felt their pardon was worth anything after this long (seriously, it's been 50 years and the woman is dead; that's like adding insult to injury), or the fact that three senators are apprently still racist enough to oppose it.
- Bill in Ohio attempts to make abortion a felony. (From [livejournal.com profile] naruto_nerd.)
- In happier news, ZOMG VERY BIG AND CUTE RABBITS.
- Read the newspost below the comic. Apparently Scientologists are fighting against anti-suicide programs in Florida schools because they use psychology. DUBBA TEE EFF.

...whew!

Also, I'm finishing up my reading in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance for today. Maybe it's just that we've been reading a lot of nonfiction in that class and so it makes a nice change, but I'm really liking this novel. Maybe I should give Hawthorne's other books another try one of these days.

Edit: Also, for some reason I keep craving Mega Man-esque synthesizer techno-pop, and the MM OC remixes just aren't cutting it. Does anyone have anything that would meet that description (other than the DDR song "Pink Rose," which I already have)? If you give some to me I will love you long time! :D
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Love and peace)
Well, I went into downtown proper (the Ped Mall area) for the first time yesterday since the tornados. It appears that reports of Panchero's demise were greatly exaggerated; it didn't even appear to have taken any damage. (Maybe it was another Panchero's? I think they're a local chain.) Really, the only visible damage in the Ped Mall itself was some damage to the roof of some of the buildings (a couple of bars, the Soap Opera) which they had blocked off. Aside from that, though, it seemed fine.

Along Burlington up towards Clinton was a different story. I hadn't realized that the block with Thai Flavors had been hit so bad - the apartment over Tony's was totalled, and the Mailboxes of Iowa City building is in really bad shape (though the apartment above it is much like that over Tony's). The Mill and Starbucks seem to have sustained some minor damage, but nothing that would keep them from opening. There also seemed to be some damage on Linn on either side of Burlington, from what I could see.

Today I went out again to buy a chocolate bunny at Osco, but it was CLOSED FOR EASTER KURSES. I guess I'll have to get one tomorrow (when it'll be super-cheap, yay!). So instead I went to the Burg and had a delicious if nontraditional Easter dinner.

Anyway, in other news I've been enjoying the anime Ouran High School Host Club. My thoughts on the Ouran anime )

And a meme...

iTunes meme )

Let's Positive Linking!
- Cadbury Egg Cake, in honor of the holiday. (From [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon.) Too bad it sounds like it's not all that great.
- Joss Whedon to direct live-action Sailor Moon with Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Garner. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) EEEK I SINCERELY HOPE THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE
- One Red Paperclip. (From [livejournal.com profile] rathershady.) This is pretty interesting - this guy is working on bartering things, starting with a red paper clip and hoping to work his way up to a house. He's currently up to a year of free rent in Phoenix, so it's quite possible he'll make it! :D
- The Mentos Test. (From [livejournal.com profile] angrybabble.) Ahaha, this seems kinda awesome...I'll have to try it myself some day. XD

Memories

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (OMG ANGST)
For some reason, I keep listening to this song over and over. You wouldn't think the ending song from an anime about gay shota incest (Papa to Kiss in the Dark) would be so cheerful, but then you'd be wrong! :D

Also, earlier this morning the GetBackers opening theme song ("Love That Never Wavers") came on as I was having an IM conversation with my friend Colin from England, and I suddenly had this visceral sensory memory of sitting in my room in Middle Mill, watching GB fansubs on my laptop in the middle of the day with the sun shining in through the curtains. That, of course, led to a cascade of more of the same type of sensory memories - sitting on a picnic blanket in Fairfield Park with Min-Hee, going to the Odeon with Col and Min, shopping at the Borders with the 300-year-old staircase, etc. - and nostalgia suddenly gripped my gut like a vise grip. It has yet to let go.

...When I met with the DGS yesterday, she said I should look at doing research abroad (i.e., England, given my specialty/ies) during the summers, and I think I may do that next summer. It's been far too long since I've been to England.

Let's Positive Linking!
- Best IMDB entry EVAR.
- Man files complaint against Easter Bunny. That damn evil bunny, when will he be stopped?
- Dog-Gone gas neutralizing thong. (All from [livejournal.com profile] surlykitty.) But how will people blame it on the dog now?
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Sue-icide)
Huh, weird. I've noticed that I find myself talking about "undergrads" in the same way most people talk about toddlers. Like, "oh, aren't the undergrads cute!" Or "damn undergrads, why can't they go find a different place to hang out and leave me in peace and quiet!"

This is rather disturbing, given that I was an undergrad less than a year ago and don't think I'm particularly mature now. I shouldn't be thinking of people who are quite possibly my age or just slightly younger (or even older, given that more people are taking years off or in general taking extra time to complete their undergrad) as "awww, look at the widdle undergrads." D:

[Poll #693109]

Let's Positive Linking!
- Found! The Longest Bird Penis Ever! I think that title speaks for itself. XD
Though I wince for those poor female ducks. Or, I guess, gay uke ducks too. Ow.
- America loses inaugural World Baseball Classic. I guess all the snark we hear from other countries about how America doesn't allow other countries in the "World" Series because we don't want to get our ass whupped is entirely justified. XD
- A funny parody: what would the packaging look like if Microsoft made the iPod? Amusing, and it turns out that apparently it's actually FROM Microsoft, which makes it that much funnier. XD
- The Lost Outlines of "Carolyn" "Keene". (From [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon.) A hilarious bit that's great for all you folks who, like me, were a fan of Nancy Drew as a child. (Before y'all start to question my masculinity, I did read the Hardy Boys books too, but their chum Chet was such an enormous idiot that I got annoyed with them a lot faster.) It's funny how much vocab I originally learned from those series. "Chum," "titian-haired," "delphinium"... XD
Anyway, while it fails to address Ned's latent homosexuality or the fact that Bess and George were totally getting it on (lesbian cousincest!), quite possibly with Nancy as well, it's still pretty funny. Though the entry forgot to mention the Overly-Detailed Description of Nancy's Hair Using Some Highflown Synonym for "Strawberry Blonde"! XD
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY)
Well, I've finally worked my way through all the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure scanslations. That said, it is totally the most awesome series EVAR and you should all be reading it if you're not already. If you want to read it, scanslations of parts 3-6 are here (the translations for part 4 are completely cracked, part 5 is ongoing but unfinished so far, and part 6 has stalled for the moment, but they're better than nothing) as well as ongoing scanslations of Steel Ball Run, the JoJo AU that is kind of serving as JoJo part 7. If you want parts 1 or 2 (part 1 is mostly setup but does have its moments of Specialness, and part 2 is delightfully cracked-out), just IM me at MegatenYosi (AIM) or yosituna@hotmail.com (MSN), and I can send them to you.

It's kind of funny - as [livejournal.com profile] nemissa said on IRC, "jojo is special in that the original manga somehow manages to be gayer than the fanworks." IT'S TRUE. No matter how gay JoJo fanart gets, it never manages to overtake something like this (note: "weird sexiness" was translated "dubious sensuality" in the official translation), or this (notice in addition to the gay pose, the questionable positioning of GioGio's hand BELOW MISTA'S BELTLINE).

Also, how can you not like a manga with a character like Doppio, who treats the most random things as phones (complete with making the DORURURURU ringing noise with his mouth)? I haven't read far enough to figure out whether his Stand power actually allows him to use random things as phones, or whether he's just poco loco, but either way he's Special with a capital S. <3

Let's Positive Linking!
- 3.6 billion degrees Fahrenheit reached on earth. Of course, taking humidity into account summer in Kansas City is still hotter. XD
- Mega Man vs. Ghosts 'N' Goblins (Flash game). Of course, I speak as someone who, hopped up on OC remixes and nostalgia, picked up Mega Man Anniversary Collection this weekend. It's either a lot harder, or I've lost a helluva lot of hand-eye coordination since I was 8. D:
- An awesome webcomic based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (a Chinese history epic). It's also Special with a capital S...I'm fairly certain the original RotTK didn't happen quite like this. Or like this. Or like this. However, even speaking as a history major, this is probably an improvement on the original. XD

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (NO FUBAR JOB FOR YOU)
Honestly, why was I stupid enough to pick a poet central to my Victorian seminar professor's subject area for my presentation/bibliography? (It's not like I picked this poet for brownie points or anything, I just thought she seemed interesting.) But seriously, whatever brownie points it MIGHT earn me are nothing compared to the oh-so-possible possibility that I somehow leave something major out, and of course my professor WILL KNOW. D:

Anyway, I spent hours and hours at the library today gathering up the last of my references, and now for tomorrow I just have to finish writing annotations for them, make a biographical handout on Janet Hamilton, and then come up with some questions to ask on the poems I've assigned. orz

On the other hand, I'm really enjoying the novel I'm reading for my American Lit class - Hope Leslie (online fulltext is here). It's about (at least in part) a free-spirited young woman among the Puritans - kind of like The Scarlet Letter as written by a less witty and more earnest Jane Austen. XD

novel talk that will probably be boring to anyone who's not a lit major )

Anyway, in my next entry will be an in-depth review (with pictures) of the wackiness that is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anime! (Yes, there is an anime. A sentai anime. Featuring Krang calling Shredder "Sawaki-chan." Look forward to it!)

Let's Positive Linking!
- AUGH WHY ARE THESE WOMEN LETTING A CAT NURSE? (Not worksafe.) D: D: D:
- Former gay prostitute runs for Texas legislature. Apparently he was a "power bottom, uninhibited hooker" who charged $200-600 a night. Hey, at least he'll probably be more honest that he'll screw you and take your money than most politicians are!
- Sudanese man forced to marry goat. My big question: if he has a goat barbecue, is that uxoricide? Or just tasty?
- Body snatchers sell stolen organs for transplants...including those of the Masterpiece Theatre host who recently died. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) D:
- Un-Pimp My Ride. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Ah, VW, your ads are hit-and-miss, but when they hit they HIT. XD

- So this is what Homeland Security is devoting their resources to. And this. Nice to know our government is watching out for us so...thoroughly. >_<
- Haha, what a great newspaper error. Apparently there's a student newspaper even worse than the U-News! XD
- British atheist looks at Colorado Springs megachurch. I do agree with the original poster that the British guy is just dripping with audible scorn, and actually gets kinda heated (though I imagine if you're a British person unused to wacky American fundamentalism, you might get kind of exasperated in a "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU SO STUPID" way). Sadly, the pastor does have a point in that the British guy totally does come off as arrogant (even though he's right). On the other hand, AUGH but said pastor is creepy and smarmy - and also apparently ill-informed as to what the Nuremberg trials actually were. XD
- Man, the day I win the lottery I'm totally going to buy a house just so I can build one of these. Of course, I suppose I'd actually have to PLAY the lottery first. XD
- Haha, this completely not worksafe music video is amusing! It's especially amusing given the production of Love's Labors Lost that I recently saw was set in the same time period, so now I'm imagining the King of Navarre asking the Princess of France whether she takes it up the ass. XD
- Apparently aliens are stealing schoolgirls' slippers. God, I love the Japanese (in general, and Mainichi Wai Wai in particular). What would we do for fubar without them?
- JOJO + STAR WARS FOR THE WIN. :D :D :D
- This is SO HOW IT IS. (From [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717.) Which reminds me, I need to do my taxes and FAFSA this week. D:

- Scary-Go-Round makes fun of Questionable Content. I'd be offended if I weren't laughing my ass off. XD
- Cingular tries to patent emoticons. Personally, I'm waiting for them to try to patent netspeak too. "OMGLOL(c)!"

OK, I totally feel like a ridiculous BPAL glutton, since I got three months' worth of orders this a week. (Part of it was that I was gone for a month, and then I guess they cleared up their backlog over the holidays. XD) But I'm now DROWNING IN BPAL...I have to do a crapton of reviews over the weekends so that I know which ones I like. (I'm highly amused by the fact that they sent Follow Me Boy as one of my frimps. XD)

Last night I had my first History of Western Letterforms class. It seems pretty cool - mostly focused on hands-on work, exploring doing calligraphy of various hands throughout the ages - but a little more work-intensive than I was expecting for an undergrad class. Now, admittedly, it's more fun to practice calligraphy than to read yet another scholarly article, but we're doing like three pages of calligraphy homework a week, and by page I mean "no margins chock full writing a crapload of stuff." And also, because we're trying to get things right, it's taking FOREVER - I spent most of class yesterday (about two hours) drawing basic Roman letters with pencil on graph paper and didn't even finish half a page, and we have to have three pages of it (plus another full alphabet) next week. You'd be surprised how hard it is to draw decent-looking versions of the letters we write EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN' DAY. D:

Oh, also, I finally found a used couch that's pretty nice and that they'd deliver (it's even a sleeper, and in a color I like) and so I should have it tomorrow morning. :D

- Expose radical teachers and get $100! Yay for university McCarthyism (NOT).
- Cyclops kitten. (From [livejournal.com profile] rathershady.) OMG SO CUTE
- Most college students lack skills - MAD SKILLZ, that is. Actually, I have all of the skills they're so worried we don't have, so I'm not frettin'.
- Apparently Kirk Cameron has gone all fundie Christian, and in the process has lost his mind. WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CRAWDADS

Edit: Oh, and for [livejournal.com profile] rathershady, a link to the webcomic One Over Zero.

Damn BPAL, they really know how to get me to buy smelly stuff. They've just introduced a frickin' Chaucer scent (Parlement of Foules). That's cheating! >F

Anyway, because I'm sure y'all were waiting with bated breath for me to pick up with the BPAL reviews again, here ya are!

Anyway, classes start up again tomorrow (well, today now, I guess, since it's after midnight). Fortunately I have a very good schedule this semester - no classes before 1 p.m. and Fridays off, though I do have evening classes Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. However, I'd probably still better get to bed so that I can get my full ten hours before having to go in to class. So I will leave you with links!

Let's Positive Linking!
- Apparently the Brain (from Pinky and the Brain) was based on Orson Welles. Which homage I'd never realized before but now wonder how in the hell I missed it. XD
- A funny-ass song that anyone who's ever dated a gamer will find extra-hilarious. It starts off slow, but by the end I was laughing my ass off. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
- Even though the Donner Party is famous for cannibalism, apparently the Donner family itself didn't practice it. Which is good to know, I guess.
- Jack Thompson wants to ban Sims 2. Because apparently it provides a playground for pedophiles and has realistically rendered genitalia under the blur. (Which, no. I've seen screenshots with the anti-blur patch, and the Sims look like Ken and Barbie dolls.) Lord, what fools these zealots be...
- On the other side, here's a negative review of Narnia that bashes it for being too Christian. I have no problem with it bashing Narnia per se, or even for disliking the "religious themes," it's just that it seems kind of shriekingly, aggressively, reactionarily atheistic. It's like the moment this person heard that the writer intended it to be a Christian allegory, a little siren in her head turned on blinking "warning, belief approaching - FIRE TORPEDOES!" Especially when her main complaint is "C.S. LEWIS WAS CHRISTIAN AND THEY'RE PROMOTING THIS MOVIE IN CHURCHES!" Which, y'know, are both true, but kind of irrelevant to the movie itself.
(And really, as religious allegory it's kinda piss-poor - not only did I not notice it when I first read them as a kid, but even now I'm like, "wait, but if Aslan is Jesus how does that work if he's already the great king of the forest? Shouldn't he be like a lamb or a mouse or something meek?" So I don't quite understand how this reviewer got "OH MY GOD THEY'RE INCULCATING CHILDREN WITH EVIL CHRISTIAN VALUES" because, seriously, if that's the case? They're shockingly incompetent.)
...Also, according to this article 43% of Britons don't know what Easter celebrates. :O
- And while we're on the subject of assy critiques, here's one of a Jewish comic book that takes the opportunity to slam ALL graphic novels. Because apparently graphic novels are INCAPABLE of being an art form, despite the fact that they're combining words and pictures, both of which can be an art form on their own. I guess there must be some kind of chemical reaction when they come together that emits anti-artistic or possibly death rays, that's the only explanation I can come up with for such sheer idiocy.
- And finally on the "stupid review" front, here's a review from Orson Scott Card of Aeon Flux. The entire article is about how Aeon Flux is too much like the video game it's based on, which makes for a bad movie, and then moves out to a criticism of video games in general (though he does give props to Katamari Damacy). There's only really one problem with it: AF is not based on a videogame, but on a series of MTV shorts from the early (mid?) 90s. ...It's called research, Orson, you might wanna look it up. (And yes, I realize the logical problem inherent in that sentence.)

- A good retrospective on Working Designs. (From [livejournal.com profile] dragonmaster_x.) For the record, I liked Working Designs all right - however, I had issues with their insertion of fart jokes and such into games, and thought that their limited edition swag packages were pointless.
- Diane Duane looks at new publishing method. I like the idea, but I was never a big fan of her time-traveling cats series, so I probably wouldn't buy a book. In principle I'm totally behind it though, and would buy one of her other series, or a book by an author I liked more.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Mellow dude)
For some reason I'm feeling very nostalgic today - not for anything in particular, really, just for about everything. It's kind of a weird feeling, because normally I can put a specific name to nostalgia - like "oh, remember England?" or "oh, I remember that trip to Memphis!" But now it's just kind of a generalized nostalgia for all of my various past experiences. It's weird.

In related news, I just put together a ginormous playlist of all my '80s (and a little '70s) soft-rock. It is the AWESOME PLAYLIST OF DOOM! *insert silent squeeing here*

Okay, um, today was kinda eventful. I was part of a theory study group looking at the exam questions for our final, then Amy (one of Ben's friends who lives up here) took me out grocery shopping and to get some boots so that I'm a little more snow-ready. Afterwards, we picked my truck up from the shop and took it home. But having spent all day around other people, I'm feeling kinda lonely. But I keep telling myself that I'm getting ready to go home next weekend and spend most of a month around other people, so I should enjoy the solitude while I've got it. XD

Let's Positive Linking!
- Gay marriage passes in Britain, yay! Hahaha, the Pink Pound. XD
- Crimes against kids increasing in Japan. I like how even though their crime rate has risen 50% in the last four years, that just means they're up to 30 murders a year. FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.
- The straight dude's guide to Brokeback Mountain. (From [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717.) *refrains from a South Park "gay cowboys eating pudding" joke because they've all been made in the months since this movie was announced*

Edit: Remember the Escapist article I linked to a couple days back? Well, the author has put up a response to the criticisms, and it makes him sound like even MORE of a smug, pretentious fuck. If the Escapist article was irritating, this will make you want to either gouge your eyes out at this guy's ego or slap the fucktard silly over his puerile posing. ([livejournal.com profile] enkiae and I have been pointing and mocking and snarking over AIM all evening; it's fun, you should try it!)

Edit 2: Holy crap, a Tri-Ace double whammy: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth have both been announced! The first is a sequel to Valkyrie Profile, only one of the best games for the PSOne (which I bought when it first came out, gave it to my sister a few years later when she was complaining about not having enough games, and then she promptly turned around and sold her game system and games for a pittance, AUGH); the second is a remake of the original for the PSP. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to do the Mexican Rain Dance Localization Dance. And while I'm at it, I'll ask for a domestic release for Devil Summoner PSP too.

Edit 3: Oh no, Eugene McCarthy and Richard Pryor died. ;_;

Edit 4: Okay, by popular request (or just because I felt like putting it up): [livejournal.com profile] enkiae's and my snark over Chris Crawford's articles (both the original Escapist article and then his rebuttal posted on his own website which is linked above).

Okay! My Chaucer journal is due tomorrow, so I'll be journallin' all day and through the night - hence, there'll probably be very little talk about actual stuff for a day or two. So instead, to keep you procrastinating occupied, some links for j00:

Let's Positive Linking, Ginormous Chaucer Journal Edition!
- One Over Zero, a cute webcomic that manages to constantly talk about philosophical stuff without being, y'know, boring. :O
- Watch the X-Men 3 trailer! I've gotta say, it looks pretty promising so far. (Yay, Phoenix!) USA Today also has a photo gallery with more info.
- Wired did an article on Epic Legends of the Hierarchs: The Elemenstor Saga, which amuses me greatly.
- Smut for Smut. Swap your Bibles for porn! Though I do hope this guy had some porn tailored to women as well - he sounds kind of fratboy-ish, though, so I'm thinking not.
- Holy crap, the end of
this Fametracker article took my breath away. I was just happily aghast at the sheer bitchiness of it. XD
- An article about Christianity and Holllywood, which is most notable for the tidbit that they're currently making a Bridge to Terabithia movie. HOLY CRAP YES. I don't think it's a particularly Christian book, but I loved that book when I was a kid. (They're also doing a movie of The Giver, if any of y'all liked that one.) I will admit, though the whole "the evil liberal left is scared of Christians finally being able to disseminate their message" thing kinda irked me. Personally, I don't care whether a movie is Christian or not - I'll go see it if I think it looks good, like Narnia, and if I don't, I won't. (Passion of the Christ being a prime example of the "bleh, that looks unfun" category.) It's not The Fascist Liberal Man keeping Christian movies down; they don't succeed because they mostly have sucked. XD

...oh, that reminds me of something else! One of my classmates who's a grader said that they were currently grading a set of papers where the assignment was to write on the Biblical references in any movie or something like that, and one of the students (these are college students, mind) did a paper on VeggieTales. XD
- Catherine Keener seems so cool and down-to-earth. Seriously, she totally seems like the kind of person that it'd be great fun to hang out with.
- Holy crap, Eminem is remarrying his ex! :O
- Wow, Johnny Depp is obsessed with noses. First the whole noseless-Jack-Sparrow thing in the PotC commentary, then apparently he's going to be playing a guy who loses his nose somehow in an upcoming role, and now this. XD
- Gay Superman? Apparently there are rumors that Bryan Singer cast Brandon Routh because he wants to sleep with him. (OMGSHOKKU! Like that's never happened in Hollywood before.)
- Defamer quoted as fact by Australian Murdoch paper. Though, in their defense, Mel Gibson's been so crazy I would totally buy that as a true story if I didn't know it was satire. XD

Edit: It's a picture of Skippy! (drawn by the author of Something Positive)

The bad: Disney is replacing Christopher Robin with a Mary Sue.
The good: Neil Gaiman's hilarious response. Gosharootie!

Er, yes, and more BPAL reviews. I added [livejournal.com profile] alchemylab back onto my flist - BIG mistake. I will never go there again unless I am looking for something very specific, because it's too tempting to just be "ooh, I've heard good things about this one, oh, I should get this one, etc."

- Woman hires hit man for cheese. I believe that headline speaks for itself.
- The ugliest dog EVAR, which recently died. It looked kind of like something out of a survival horror game, but I'm still kinda sad that it died. ;_;
- Design the Silent Hill movie poster! If my MAD PHOTOSHOP SKILLZ actually, y'know, EXISTED, I'd totally do this!
- I kinda want to smack the irritating sense of self-entitlement out of this brat (assuming such a thing is possible). Newsflash, kid: not everything is about you!
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (RAISE TEH ROOF WOOO)
Okay, I'm going to give this holiday thing one more try this year. After the abysmal failure to get anything sent out last year, I've decided I got too ambitious - I won't plan on sending anything out besides cards, and if something else DOES get sent out it will be totally unplanned and spontaneous. (Last year the problem was I had like a billion things I wanted to send out and had like 2/3 of them ready but waited on the other third until it was too late and pointless.) However, most of y'all's addresses were lost when my UMKC account closed earlier in the semester, so the only person's address I have is [livejournal.com profile] jokersama's IL address.

So! Y'all, post your addresses here if you'd like a little somethin' over the holidays. (Any replies with addresses in them will be screened, so you won't have to worry about other folks seein' your addys.)

Anyway, things are windin' down! I met with my Chaucer prof today to discuss my paper, and she seems to think it's really good. (At least, all her criticism was "this is good, you just need to expand it more rather than rushing over it" rather than "er, I don't think this'll work," so that's a Good Thing, right?) She also really liked my reading of the Manciple's Tale that I talked about in class yesterday - REALLY liked it, apparently, because she mentioned it several times yesterday and several times during my meeting with her today. So maybe I'm not coming off like a brain-dead moron 100% of the time. XD

It's funny, though: yesterday one of my classmates mentioned, in a discussion of Chaucer and alcohol, that he'd never been drunk. The prof was like, "Now, I don't mean to advocate booze or anything, but I think maybe you need to have been drunk before to understand the Canterbury Tales. But no peer pressure!"

- Cafe stirs debate over kids' behavior. I actually get livid when dealing with parents like this, who are all "ZOMG WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU EXPECT MY KID TO BEHAVE, OBVIOUSLY YOU JUST HATE PEOPLE WITH KIDS YOU...YOU...PARENTIST!" I kind of want to punt them through a wall.
- This is a fetish I had not been aware of. That's pretty bad though, I'm glad the guy's been put away.
- Best Gift Boardgames Guide 2005. (This and the above link from [livejournal.com profile] rathershady.)
- If you like Engrish, check out these bad Hong Kong action flick subtitles. "How can you use my intestines as a gift?"
- To be honest, I don't know how to describe this link. It's more Engrish though! (Not worksafe; this and the one above from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
