gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Tamama)
Warning: completely arbitrary "best of" list ahoy!

...I figure it's late enough in the PS2's lifespan to look back on the games released for it as a whole. And specifically, my chosen genre of game, the RPG. So, bored and fueled by cinnamon bears, I am making a top ten list of the best PS2 RPGs ever.

My list (spoilers ahoy) )

Okay! Making this post was one of my goals for the weekend; others are making a post about cracktastic yaoi manga (the one I've been promising for like 3 months), posting about how the manga Princess Princess changed my life (...kinda), posting some Old English riddles that [livejournal.com profile] enkiae was asking about, playing a shitload of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana, and watching a shitton of Doctor Who (they tried to deliver my megaset today but I was off teaching, so I get to go to the Post Office and pick it up tomorrow, whee!).
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Pissed off Hot Pants)
Dammit, I hate losing an hour SO MUCH ARGH. >F

...Okay, I haven't posted in a while basically because I wanted to finish the first part of my ginormous Suikoden V gameblog to date.

So without further ado, TEH GAMEBLOG.

In which incest, gay bishounen, and MILFs are all mentioned )

Er, in other videogame talk, I decided against Kingdom Hearts II for now; I barely have time to play one game at the moment, and moneywise it came down to one or the other. I'm sure I'll get it eventually - probably as a reward to myself for finishing finals - but right now I'm sticking to SuikoV. But dammit, now I really wish I had gotten KH2 as well. XD

Let's see, what else has gone on lately...oh, yesterday I went to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis, [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic and [livejournal.com profile] bshippotemkin to watch The Brotherhood of the Wolf, which was a delightfully cheesy French action flick about the Beast of Gevaudan. It was better than I was expecting, and the first half was actually pretty historically accurate! (Well, except for the kung fu Indian.) After that it got a little more ridiculous (...okay, a lot more ridiculous) but it was still fun. :D

Also, apropos of nothing, painting illuminated letters is a ridiculous amount of fun. So is putting gold leaf on them - it's so shiny! +_+

Links to follow tomorrow, I don't really feel like organizing and formatting them right now.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I'm no artist)
Today it literally took me about two minutes to do the People crossword. Seriously, SO EASY.

Also, in breaking news, I HATE BIRDS. I went downtown to pick up some bubble mailers (to send BPAL) and pop, and halfway home a bird crapped on my head. And I'd just taken a shower, too, which meant I had to wash my hair twice in two hours which I'm fairly certain means I will have split ends all to hell tomorrow.

I also drew a picture during my breaks from reading Aurora Leigh. If you're in the mood for some Persona fanart, look no further. (For once it doesn't look like ass!)

...Those of you who remember What is Silent Hill? (that I posted earlier) may enjoy this (for SH fans) and this (for JoJo fans).

And finally, something that managed to traumatize even me: a horrific Harry Potter slash fancomic (NOT WORKSAFE - from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama, who else?), featuring crossdressing!Harry, crossdressing!Snape, and voyeur!Lupin, AUGH.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Pissed off Hot Pants)
While visiting PostSecret today, I saw a card that I think sums up a lot of people's motivations (probably including mine): "Sometimes we put up walls. Not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to knock them down."

...Anyway, more Suikotactoblog!

- Dammit, the human body should not move like this! I'm amused by the fact that she totally moves like Voldo from Soul Calibur III (down to the floppy thing and the roll near the end of the video).
- If you haven't seen the South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet" - the one that can't be reaired because Tom Cruise is trying to sue - here's your chance. I especially liked the end credits. XD

- A good retrospective on Working Designs. (From [livejournal.com profile] dragonmaster_x.) For the record, I liked Working Designs all right - however, I had issues with their insertion of fart jokes and such into games, and thought that their limited edition swag packages were pointless.
- Diane Duane looks at new publishing method. I like the idea, but I was never a big fan of her time-traveling cats series, so I probably wouldn't buy a book. In principle I'm totally behind it though, and would buy one of her other series, or a book by an author I liked more.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Pissed off Hot Pants)
First, some random stuff:

- Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ahebert!

- You know, it's ridiculous how consistently good the Suikoden albums are. (All like two dozen or however many of them there are.) I've been going on a downloading spree from the Galbadia Hotel videogame soundtracks download section. (They also have quite a few Megaten albums, including Punitive Dance, if any of y'all are interested and don't know about it already.) But seriously, Suikoden's had everything from Celtic to jazz to orgel (music box) to piano albums, and they're ALMOST ALL GOOD. x_x

I also like how some of them take songs I never particularly noticed in the original (like the piano version of the first Suikoden's "Dancing Girl") and rearrange it to the point where I'm like, "wow, that's actually a really pretty melody, I never noticed that before."

- I have discovered recently that I have phone phobia. In fact, I think I've always had it. I hate talking on the phone to people, and avoid it whenever possible. This is a completely general and impersonal thing - even when it comes to people I like very much and know very well and have no problem talking to in person, I always feel like I have trouble talking to them on the phone. And this is even more true for people I don't know particularly well - even if I'd be fine talking to them in person or by e-mail, on the phone I'm always an incoherent mess and it just gets bad.

So, in conclusion, phone conversations = TEH EBIL, and from now on I will try to engineer things so I have to have them as little as possible.

- Also, Saturday marked my return to IRC for the first time in a long while (like, since about halfway through my year in England). I hadn't realized, but I'd missed it! :O

...And to lead in to the Suikoblog, here's an interview on SuikoTactics. My favorite part:

THIS GAME HAS EATEN MY LIFE. Even now, as I'm working on a Romanticism presentation for Monday (or possibly Wednesday, but I need to have it ready on Monday), it's all I can do not to run back to it. DAMN YOU KONAMI FOR MAKING SUCH FIENDISHLY ADDICTIVE GAMES.

And SuikoTactics is, like, the epitome of that. Suikoden + SRPG is like chocolate and peanut butter, y'know? They just go together so well!

- Apparently rewards are not particularly motivating after all. It sounds paradoxical, but actually I can believe it - I've seen it and, hell, been the same way myself at times. XD
- Food critic wins Bad Sex in Fiction award. At least he's much more graceful about it than that douchebag Tom Wolfe was. If you want to see his selection and the runners-up, go here. Marlon Brando's is horrible, but then there's the winner, which ends with the words "Like Zorro." XD
- A literary plagiarist is caught. And while I think what he did is deplorable, I'm irritated by the way the article's author uses that as a springboard to tar everyone he ever had any kind of dealings with. And while he may have a valid cricism about the guy favorably reviewing his friends' work, there's also the fact that the writing workshop these writers met at is a pretty good writing workshop, and so it's probable that yeah, they ARE all pretty good writers (though hopefully the others are more original). It's like people in the literary world (or who want to be in the literary world) who complain that the Iowa Writers' Workshop folks get published disproportionately highly, and claim that they're being favored somehow. When in actuality, it's probably that the Iowa Workshop takes a lot of the creme de la creme of young literary authors, so it's probably that they're just really good writers. (It's kind of like complaining that Ivy League graduates are disproportionately represented in political office, and so it must be a SINISTER PLOT BY A CABAL OF ACADEMICS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD when it's really just that the people who have the smarts and/or the money to go to Ivy League schools also have the smarts and/or the money to make it in politics.)
- Where are all the great women comic book artists? This mostly just amuses me for its referring to girls' manga as "shoju." XD

- Laurell K. Hamilton apparently pulled an Anne Rice a few months ago. For those of you who aren't familiar with LKH, she's the author of the Anita Blake series of vampire novels, which I hugely enjoyed until it basically became softcore porn. And for the record, I've always disliked Richard and I still thought she'd gone way overboard with the sex. (Her recent book even had Anita being tag-teamed by a wereleopard and a werewolf - who partially shapeshift in the middle of sex. Can we say "furry fetish?") Also, it's hard to believe that a published author can be so woeful at spelling. I mean, come on..."privaledge?" XD
- And a parody of one of her more recent books FOR TEH WIN. Sadly, this is not all that far off. XD
- And while we're bashing fantasy authors, a rant on Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind. Never read Goodkind (and after reading that, don't want to) but attempted to wade through the first Wheel of Time book and made it through like 50 pages before the snore-inducingness of it all made me give it up as a lost cause. Sounds like I'm not missing much. I know a lot of people who love the books though (like my mom, and I think [livejournal.com profile] rathershady reads them too), so YMMV.

Okay, so I abandoned my shortlived feud with Gamers because I wanted Suikoden: Tactics and they had it in. (Yes, I am easily angered but quick to cool down as well. Plus there's no other game store in town. I am both forgiving and pragmatic!)

So, without further ado, a SuikoTactics gameblog! :D

Okay, first off, the game is EXACTLY what you'd think of if you imagine Suikoden crossed with Final Fantasy Tactics. Gameplay, battles, even the music sounds like a cross between FFT and Suikoden. (It's Suikoden motifs, but it sounds like it was arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto with the harp arpeggios and suchlike.) Also, if you've played SuikoIV, you will squeal like a schoolgirl - this game caters to the Suikoh0's nostalgia wang.

In which some familiar faces make a reappearance - SPOILARS, obviously )

Anyway, if you played and liked SuikoIV then pick up SuikoTactics! I'd totally say it seems less gay than the previous Suikodens except, well, it doesn't. XD

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Fursuit Mario (by Sam of VGR))
You know, if they do a PS3 remake of Final Fantasy VII, what I'd be most looking forward to seeing? How they handle the Honeybee Inn sequence. XD

Anyway, this weekend [livejournal.com profile] rathershady and [livejournal.com profile] courters28 came up to Iowa to visit. And you know, I totally had not realized how much I missed either of them until they got here. I was like "...DAMN, but it's good to see you both." XD

We mostly just hung out at my apartment and tried some of the restaurants in Iowa City (the Airliner, the Hamburg Inn, and someplace even I'd never tried before, Joe's Grill). We did go out to a movie theater and see Corpse Bride though, which was really good (and a testimony to the fact that that execrable remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a momentary glitch).

I showed Advent Children to Vinnie (whose thoughts on the plot ran similar to mine). And We Love Katamari was a hit with them as well. Also, they brought up my Gamecube, so we played quite a bit of Super Smash Bros.: Melee. (And now I can pick up Tales of Symphonia in the near future, since [livejournal.com profile] vaulted_eel's posts have made it sound so tantalizing.) We also tried to watch part of a MST3K episode, but it was sadly unfunny (atypically for the series) so we skipped watching the rest in favor of some Greg the Bunny.

It was a really fun time, but all good things must come to an end, right? So they headed out this afternoon, and I spent several hours working with polymer clay (it's harder than you'd think) and reading voluminous academic treatises on literary theory. Bleh. I also watched an episode of Firefly - I'm trying to watch the last few episodes before Serenity comes out this weekend - and was reminded that GODDAMN THIS SHOW IS GOOD.

And speaking of Serenity, a quiz result )

- Two of the scariest things in the world are united: evangelical Christians and mimes. ph34r. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
- Apparently, Akira Toriyama felt the need to put Super Saiyans into Dragon Quest VIII. XD
- Here's a new Konami game I'd heard nothing of before [livejournal.com profile] jokersama talked about it in her LJ: OZ (Over Zenith): Rhythmical Combination. Apparently it takes place in "a world oppressed by gods and their envoys," and features a little girl named Dorothy in distress (along with her little red demon Toto). Three main characters set out to save her, who I'm sure correspond with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion: Feel (apparently the main character), Almira, and Leon. The "rhythmical combination" battle system seems pretty cool - basically you play catch with the enemies or something along those lines. (I hope it has support for 3P play.) I also really like the music in the first and last trailers, but that's not the thing that has me most intrigued. The last trailer shows the heroes apparently summoning the Flame Champion and Koroku from Suikoden III (at about 5:45) and Robbie the Rabbit from Silent Hill (at about 8:35). HOLY CROSSOVER BATMAN
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Default)
Just finished watching the Rhapsodia trailer at Suikox.com. And all I have to say is...holy shit, this looks like it might be the best Suikoden game EVAR. With a shit-ton of returning characters, SRPG gameplay and even goat-people, how can this game not be good? (Now let's just hope it has the Iron Chef cooking contest from SuikoII!)

And dude, the trailer ends with Brandeau, Kika and Edgar getting ready for the big fight in which Edgar dies and passes on the Rune of Punishment to Brandeau. :D :D :D

Also, Suikoden V has been announced. With an astonishingly feminine-looking male protagonist, dressed in an off-the-shoulders outfit. Quelle surprise. Ah, Konami, it's nice to know there are constants in life: water will always be wet, the IRS will always insist on its pound of flesh, and Suikoden protagonists will always be gay.

Edit: And, in case you've forgotten, Serenity (aka The Firefly Movie) is coming out at the end of the month. And I know you're all going to see it, right? RIGHT? T_T
