Just finished the newest Harry Dresden book by Jim Butcher, Changes...and it was totally awesome, as expected, but wow the author REALLY wasn't lying when he said this was the book that changes everything (as per the title). Also HOLY CLIFFHANGER ENDING BATMAN WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Also why is no one else I know reading these books, sob

Also I have been watching the new Doctor Who! I am greatly enjoying Smiffy as the Eleventh Doctor, and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond is adorable and awesome.

Highlights, lowlight and nattering about previews for next few weeks )

In other news, I sent off a prospectus draft this past week, and hope to send out the final draft next week. All things going well, I should have it approved and starting the dissertation should be go by the end of the month!

Book-a-nook

Book rec time! I haven't had much time for fun reading lately (though over break I did read Octavia Butler's Kindred and reread her Wild Seed, both of which are totally awesome and which everyone should read), but the other day I found a book that looked interesting in the library and checked it out. It's called The English American, by Alison Larkin. It's semiautobiographical in that it's about a young adopted British woman who, at 28, meets her Southern American birth parents (like Larkin herself), though it is a novel and certainly I imagine a lot of the things that happen in it are whole cloth.

More about the book )

Anyway, it's worth reading!

Also this Twilight video from [livejournal.com profile] braaaiiins is awesome:

OH DEAR GOD THIS IS SO TRUE (and this, and this; links from [livejournal.com profile] worldserpent). The Piers Anthony, Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey, being the authors closest to my preteen and adolescent heart, are the best, but really most if not all of these are totally awesome. XD

As some of you may already know, one of my favorite fantasy series ever is Mark Anthony's The Last Rune. He finished the last book in the series several years ago, and there hadn't been a peep from him until this summer, when he finally updated it by saying that he was working on a new fantasy trilogy, under a pseudonym, which would be released "later in 2008" but which he would reveal as his own when the time was right. He said it was "quite a bit different" from TLR, but "very true to who [he is] as a writer."

I think I may have figured out what his new pseudonym and series is, completely by accident.

My theory )

Now, I could be totally wrong; but the more I think about it, the more I think I'm right. Either way, I definitely think this book is worth checking out, especially if you like fantasy and you like Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte (I imagine this description will encompass a large portion of my flist, especially those with two X chromosomes); give it a try!

Edit: OH DUH, and "Galen Beckett"...the heroine of TLR is Grace Beckett, who is a physician (Galen being a famous ancient physician).

Edit 2: EVEN MORE DUH, I am officially a moron; I COULD have always just looked at the copyright page, which confirms that it IS Mark Anthony. *facedesk* Still, whee!
