gogmagog: Tatsuya Suou from Persona 2 (Even emo can smile)

PERSONA 2 PORTABLE TRAILER

OMG LOOKS PRETTY AWESOME, though I notice Jun has been mostly removed, aside from a few nods here and there (and one headless shot of him in school uniform). This makes sense, as would not want to spoil people for the CRAZY AWESOME (and awesome crazy).

Anyway, in honor of this upcoming rerelease (for which more art has come out), I feel it's time to resurrect a long-dormant feature of my LiveJournal over here, which is a takeoff on one of the Persona 2 characters' signature phrases.

Let's Positive Linking: Persona 2 YouTube Edition!
- Durara parody video.
- Trinity Soul parody video. (Why does Baofu have a sunflower for a head?)
- Smooch parody video. SO CUTE.
- Higurashi parody video. Like chocolate and peanut butter.
- Danjo parody video.
- Peke Rush parody video.

Even though I am unfamiliar with most of the source materials to these (aside from Higurashi), I greatly enjoyed them.

Some other awesome videos that are non-Persona related:
- Full Metal Alchemist meets Final Fantasy VI.
- Ouran meets Final Fantasy VI...
- ...and Final Fantasy VII.
- "Sometimes, I'm a SOLDIER. Sometimes, I'm a mental patient. But my true identity is...CLOUD FLASH!"

(BTW, I have now imported all of my LJ posts over here, for the record.)
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Behold!)

So! Have some links, since I need to close Safari down to be able to check my Gmail.

Let's Positive Linking!
- An interesting article on the new first family, and especially the diversity of the Obamas' extended family and how that is reflecting much more the makeup of the United States.
- New anti-lead law may lead to kids' books being made prohibitively expensive or unavailable. Okay, so I get the reasons for this whole lead craziness over kids' toys - no one wants their kid to end up with lead poisoning - but seriously, bitches need to sit the fuck down and draft laws that actually do what they need to do and no more. HAY GUYS WHY DON'T WE BAN PENCILS, THEY HAVE "LEAD" IN THE NAME, RIGHT
- Hirohiko Araki (of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) creates manga for the Louvre (from [livejournal.com profile] youkofujima). WHY CAN I NOT BE IN FRANCE BEFORE APRIL T_T
Also how fitting is it that Rohan's the one at the Louvre? Though I sort of wish they'd had him do a gigantic sculpture of Kira standing in front of the Mona Lisa and looking at her hands instead. Also didn't either Pucci or Dio have some fascination with the Mona Lisa too? Oh, Araki, you and your WAYS.
- Don't Be Panic! God, this reminds me so much of some of my student papers, especially when I was teaching Rhetoric. Jesus wept.
- Footie Pajamas for Grownups...I totally want a set. And it reminds me of that scene from Scrubs..."why yes, ladies, it IS a onesie."
- The Worst Dub in History (totally NS4W for language), which happens to be the dub used for the hentai anime Bible Black. (Don't worry, I don't think it shows any porn scenes, although the language is pretty, um, questionable, though not as much so as the voice acting.)
- More horrific hentai (and this is DEFINITELY NSFW, as the YouTube link got taken down so it's only available on a pornsite that I could find). This one isn't particularly badly dubbed, but it's the content of this sex scene (and it IS a sex scene, unlike the last one) which makes it so disturbing. "Now cluck like a chicken! Now like you're laying a gigantic egg!"
- Caramelldansen, Persona 4 edition (complete with spoilers, sadly). I think my favorite is Kanji, with a face like a stormcloud while doing the dance, although Yosuke's, Chie's and Teddie's beaming faces are also awesome. ALSO DOJIMA DANCES TOO. (As do Adachi, and Nanako, and...) So, it's basically awesome.

That's all of the "normal" links I have, but as I am an awesome person and my Safari tabs are entirely too full still, you get a second helping of linkage, this time all food-related!

Let's Positive Linking - Dinnertime Edition!
- Hamburger- and popcorn-shaped vacuum cleaners, which are, in a word, awesome.
- Similarly awesome is the Slush-It, which turns anything into slush and even has a nifty color-change patch (and the video on the website of the pop actually turning to slush in a few seconds once it's opened is TOTALLY SWEET and makes me want one ridiculously badly).
- And now to the bad stuff...if you're eating, you may want to stop now. Least offensive is this video of ikizukuri (i.e., fish prepared alive), which features the fish cut up and served on a plate BUT WITH ITS HEART AND GILLS STILL WORKING (and the same for the tiny octopus in the background). Who the fuck would eat this, I have no idea. :(
- Even more offensive to me, though, is anything Sandra Lee has ever done. Exhibit A, in which she makes "heirloom Noel cake" - just like grandma made, or would have if she'd had access to spray icing, Twizzlers and someplace to buy baked and unfrosted layer cakes.
- Exhibit B, in which she does "take out in," which involves something called "beer margaritas." Also apparently pizza, tiramisu and "wonton Napoleons" are all Mexican-inspired...good to know.
- Exhibit C, the infamous Kwanzaa cake. Angel-food cake, frosted with disgusting-looking icing (seriously, adding TWO TEASPOONS OF VANILLA to already vanilla-flavored icing? ewww), filled with apple pie filling, and decorated with "acorns" and "Kwanzaa candles."
- And finally, exhibit D, which is perhaps the worst culinary abortion I've seen her do. Not to mention bitch needs to stop dissing my homeboy A.C. Slater and his smiley-face cookie, especially since this cake truly does make Wal-Mart commercials look ineffably classy in comparison.
- Oh, and one more: not only does the woman LOOOOOVE her booze, but this "tablescape" is possibly the most horrifying thing I've ever seen. It's a CHAIR, painted GOLD, with FAKE VINES ON IT, WHAT THE FUCK
- Finally, a video of someone making her (in)famous Semi-Homemade Cherry Pie. Unsurprisingly, it turns out pretty crappy.

...wow, I had a lot of tabs open. XD
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I think I have to lie down)
A few years back there was a kind of awesome BAFTA award-winning animation of Gawain and the Green Knight by a couple of Irish animation studios. It's quite gorgeously animated, in a stained-glass style, and shockingly quite true to the original. It has yet to be released on DVD, but fortunately someone has put it up on YouTube (part 1, part 2, and part 3). I'm sure it's way prettier in non-YouTube format, but it still looks pretty awesome...watch it if you're interested!

I'm feeling under the weather - sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, etc. - and have all day, so I'm not gonna do much but take some NyQuil and then zonk out. So in lieu of content, links!

Let's Positive Linking!
- This week's edition of Target: Women, yogurt commercials! (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Because all women love yogurt, especially middle-class white women who wear gray hoodies and are on diets!
- EPB: Emergency Party Button (from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama)...this is pretty awesome, complete with cheesy 90's dancepop, but I don't think I'd want it in my house. XD
- Is Levitol right for you? (From, you guessed it, [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Best (pseudo-)pharmaceutical commercial ever, and an example of how good Mad TV can be on the rare occasions when it's good.
- Bill O'Reilly is a frothing nutbag, but we all knew that already. (From [livejournal.com profile] ahebert.) Still, this is hilarious and worth a watch if you haven't seen it already.
- WOLL SMOTH AND FRONDS. I don't know why these never fail to make me laugh, but I always find them HILARIOUS. I just think it's too bad they haven't included the one Doctor Who one I've seen (ROS TOYLOR). XD

Edit: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jokersama, have some ROS TOYLOR. XD
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (oh you public menace)
Well, today I had to get up at the buttcrack of dawn (a.k.a. 5:15 a.m.) to proctor an engineering exam along with [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis. It pays pretty well, and isn't very demanding, but it's still like 12 hours of a Saturday gone. (And certainly if I'd known that our paper deadline was going to be extended till Sunday, I wouldn't have done it...as it is I'm having to finish it up now, weo.)

BUT! It's new Doctor Who day, so that makes everything okay! And to make it even more awesome, they end up in Pompeii on volcano day. :D

Doctor Who 04x02 - The Fires of Pompeii - caveat spoiltor )

And while I'm Who-posting, some linkspam...

Let's Positive Linking, Gallifreyan Edition!
- For those of you unfamiliar with what Donna mentioned last week about the bees disappearing, this is in fact based on a real-life phenomenon.
- An interesting post on what Donna knows about the previous companions, which has a lot of interesting spec about Donna's role that makes me excited. :D
- Another Donna post about how the character of Donna hasn't really changed since her first appearance in "The Runaway Bride," just perception of her and her situation have.
- Finally, some spoilery finale speculation that has me totally excited for the finale. HOW CAN THEY PULL OFF THIS MUCH IN ONE EPISODE, SERIOUSLY
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (...whatever)
Wow, I've been feeling really grumpy on and off (and more on than off) today. D:

It's probably because of a combination of a headache, my stomach trying to devour itself, and being lower on sleep than I'd like. And I'd really like to take an Aleve and go to bed early today, but as I have a seminar paper due Friday, that's not so much an option. (The deadline has technically been moved to Sunday, but as I'm spending all day Saturday helping proctor an engineering test, working on it over the weekend isn't really an option; and given that a good portion of my Friday is going to be spent looking at an apartment, teaching, and then going to the prep session for the engineering thing - and given that I'm actually going to have to go to bed on time that night, since I have to be in to help proctor at 6:30 on Saturday morning - I pretty much have to finish my paper tonight and tomorrow. (If I don't, then I'll probably have to skip German class on Thursday - and I can't really afford to miss again - to finish it, augh.)

Anyway! Since any content I posted this evening was gonna be angsty emo shit, I figure I'll spare y'all the whining and give you bizarre linkspam instead. :D

Let's Positive Linking!
- OMG BEST HOT FUZZ SLASHFIC EVAR...as you will discover when you read to the end. (From [livejournal.com profile] nibantan.)
- Also from Puu, MTV Cribs: NICU. This is bitchy but hilarious, and it was even more hilarious when Puu explained the few medical references that I was missing to me.
- And one last Puu-link (she brings all the awesome medical links to the yard): the smallest girl in the world due to primordial dwarfism. I wonder whether she has to wear doll clothes, or what. But she totally looks like a Gelfling. D:
- The Napkin Musical. I think I've posted links before from Improv Everywhere - which basically does large scale rehearsed performances everywhere (so not very improv, but still). In this case, they decided to stage a impromptu musical in the food court of a mall as if it were real...the resulting song is hardly Sondheim-caliber, but it's still highly amusing.
- Wanna give Radical Honesty a try? Warning: everyone else will, rightly, think you are a douchebag. Nevertheless, I think there are some good aspects of this; it would be nicer if people were more honest about expectations and such, since there's an awful lot of mind-reading that seems to be expected from life. D:
- The coolest cafe ever. I wish it were still around, it looks like a kind of awesome place. XD
- Hannah Montana really is going to bring about the downfall of civilization. Personally I'm waiting for the Disney Channel movie I WAS A TEEN TERRORIST starring Zefron.
- The Five Most Ill-Conceived Action Figures of All Time. I'd protest what they said about He-Man, but really he is pretty gay. XD
- Also from Cracked.com, The Twenty-Five Most Disturbing Sex Toys Ever. Most of these are indeed pretty horrifying, though I think the sounding device was the worst. (If you don't know what sounding is, don't ask me, just DON'T FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH IT.)
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (NEED CAFFEINE NOW PLZKTHX)
...man, I'm exhausted and tomorrow's Monday, the beginning of the week. ARGH.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I kind of had a working weekend - tomorrow I have to present on my seminar paper, and progress thereon, in my Lydgate seminar, and also had to send out a five-page excerpt from my paper this weekend, so I've been really working crazily for a good part of this weekend. (Read: I pulled an all-nighter last night to get the last part of said excerpt beaten into submission and in some semblance of readable-by-others quality.) Still, this means that I do now have a decent chunk of my paper draft done, so that automatically puts me way further ahead of schedule than pretty much any other semester I've taken a seminar, lol. The full 20-page draft isn't due until a week from Friday, but I'm hoping to finish it before then and have it out of my hair.

Speaking of hair, I went and got a haircut today. (I was overdue, since my last haircut was in January I think.) I like it, except that I had them leave it a bit longer on the top, so if the wind blows it wrong it has a distressing tendency to sort of settle into a faux-hawk. (The better you know me in person, the funnier this will probably seem.) So I think I may have to use product, at least for a few days until it settles down a bit, just to keep it from faux-hawking on me. D:

Tomorrow is going to be hellacious, as I have my presentation in the morning, then I have to scramble to get through my reading for Rhetoric (since I will have to lead discussion on it, being the teacher and all), and then I have my German class in the evening. (Also I may be meeting with my seminar prof sometime in there.) D:

On the plus side, Mana Khemia comes out tomorrow, and y'all know how much I like me some Atelier-series gaming.

...I was about to say that if Gamers doesn't have it in tomorrow I'm gonna have to cut someone, but then I realized that I won't be able to play it till Tuesday night/Wednesday anyway (since I have to do my Old Norse translation tomorrow evening for Tuesday, and even after that I probably SHOULDN'T be playing it and SHOULD be finishing up my seminar paper draft), so I guess if they get it in a day or two late I'll be able to deal. STILL I NEED TO START IT ASAP SO I CAN FINISH IT BY THE TIME FES COMES OUT

Finally, linkspam!

Let's Positive Linking!
- I've discovered that I should probably be watching the British show Blackpool. It's several years old and is essentially a straightforward cop/crime drama, but every so often they break into musical numbers set to pop songs to express homoerotic antagonism or to celebrate a drug bust. Note that the series also starred David Tennant (a.k.a. the current Doctor Who)...and that judging from the second video, synchronized dancing is not his strong point. XD
- You know, I'm really glad that YouTube wasn't around when I was a teenager. This is not to say there aren't remnants of my youthful folly online - the Wayback Machine has copies of some rather embarrassing (attempts at) fan translation pages from when I was like 12 - but at least I never had to worry about being an Internet laughingstock, like this girl is.
- New Zealand man receives sentence for claiming that he was raped by a wombat, which caused him to start speaking "Australian." ...I couldn't make this shit up if I tried.
- On a similar note, the latest news on efforts to rekindle pandas' dormant sex drive in order to save the species. I didn't even know porn for pandas existed (unlike panda porn, which I'm sure does exist somewhere in the depths of the Interwebs).
- And finally, this is the best post I've seen on ONTD in ages (link probably not worksafe). I now know far more than I ever wanted to about Bobby Trendy's sex life, but the sheer horrific trainwreckness of this post left me simultaneously going "OH MY GOD NO I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE" and "...wait, they're refusing to give all the gory details? I CALL SHENANIGANS, GIVE US THE GOODS."

...For some reason I've had this song running through my head all weekend. So because pain shared is pain halved, have some early '90s cheese.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Peekaboo!)

LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TILL SEASON FOUR, BITCHES

Since I've got a lot of Opera tabs to close, it's linkspam time!

Let's Positive Linking!
- The dangers of Wikihistory. Poor Hitler, he must be so confused by now.
- Twin Gay Porn Stars Arrested in Rooftop Burglaries. I believe that headline says it all. (This and above link from [livejournal.com profile] eslington.)
- What is Doctor Who? Oh, YTMND, never change. (I think what disturbs me most is how much Christopher Eccleston looks like Gob Bluth. Also wtf is up with David Tennant's expression?)
- Doctor Who: The NES Game. I WANT SOMEONE TO MAKE THIS SO I CAN PLAY IT NOW, F'REALZ
- Apparently it's old news, but Maggie Smith may have cancer? This sucks, because she's freaking MAGGIE SMITH and is totally not allowed to have anything happen to her, she's too awesome. (Also she's never been on Doctor Who yet! Note, however, that even actors who have been on the show are not necessarily exempt - Derek Jacobi, I'm looking at you, you'd better not keel over anytime soon.)

Also, happy birthday to the awesome [livejournal.com profile] rathershady!
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (OMG EXAMS WHY)
I've got an all-day calligraphy workshop on both Saturday and Sunday, so I'll be MIA on IRC and AIM during that, just in case you start wondering where I am. XD

Anyway, not much else to say, so on to links!

Let's Positive Linking!
- Sweater or Death? An amusing fusion of Harry Potter and Eddie Izzard. XD
- The Anesthetist's Hymn (from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama). According to Puu, this is actually not that far from the truth. XD
- Also from Puu, The 12 Medical Specialty Stereotypes. I hear that this is pretty true-to-life as well. XD
- Orlando Bloom on Extras, which is kind of hilarious. I tend to like celebrities who are willing to make fun of themselves and their public image, though. XD
- A human!Pinky and the Brain slashfic that is surprisingly good, even if it broke my brain to realize that that was even POSSIBLE. XD
- NOM NOM NOM DELICIOUS CORN (from [livejournal.com profile] nemissa). MMMMMMMMMMMM
- The Devil in cat form (from [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic). ROWRRRRRRRRRRRR
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY)
...man, the Heroes file I downloaded last night turned out to be some kind of fucked-up file, and now I have to re-download and wait until TONIGHT to watch it. I AM WEEPING COPIOUSLY Y'ALL. ;_;

I have decided that I'm going to install Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3, mostly for emulation and M.U.G.E.N. purposes. Just imagine how sweet it would be to play Seiken Densetsu 3 in English on the PS3, or an epic Jojo vs. Ryu M.U.G.E.N. match on my HDTV...I get all tingly thinking about it. (And of course I'd love to play Persona 2: Innocent Sin on my PS3, if that English translation ever comes out.)

So I imagine I'll be updating with the results of my progress, just so that y'all other PS3 users out there on the flist (all...two of you that I can think of, who don't seem particularly interested in homebrew orz BUT WHAT ABOUT EPIC DIO X BRIDGET BATTLES THAT DON'T INVOLVE SHOTARAPE A LA 4CHAN) can learn from my progress and inevitable mistakes if you wish to do the same. I won't be able to do it until probably later this week, though - I need to pick up a USB keyboard and mouse before I even think about installation.

Let's Positive Linking!
- Crono learns Slash. Old-school CT fans should enjoy this (I especially like Marle's picture-perfect win pose).
- Did Jesus affirm a gay couple in the Bible? You learn the most interesting things from fandom_wank religious discussions...I'd never even heard about this before but I find it pretty convincing linguistically.
- Jesus vs. Jeezus. Mildly amusing, and in the vein of the last link. I PREFER JESUS TO JEEZUS THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (O RLY?)
HAI EBURIBADII

I'm not sure there's anyone on my flist who has the same bizarre confluences of dorkinesses that I do and hence will get why I find this icon so funny - maybe one or two - but hopefully this and this will enlighten. XD

Apropos of nothing, can I just say that I am SO TIRED of people calling me "ma'am"? I've given up on it on the phone, but in person even? Seriously, yesterday I went to get dinner at Sbarro with [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis before our German seminar, and the woman working there - despite me having been there before, and despite me NOT HAVING SHAVED IN THREE DAYS (and when I don't shave, it SHOWS) - called me "ma'am" when she gave me my food.

...now maybe it's just me, but I do not think I look like a girl AT ALL. In fact, if I were a girl, I would be a DAMN UGLY ONE. And yet people still persist in thinking I'm a woman. orz

Let's Positive Linking!
- The Postmodern Article Generator. I think my fellow academics on the flist will appreciate this...
- ...as well as documentation on that absurd, parody cultural physics article that actually got published in a serious journal. I'd heard about it before, but this is my first time reading it, and WOW it really is nonsensical (especially reading the author's lucid explanation of its absurdities in the following article). XD
- SONIC IN SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL I'M SO EXCITED I CAN'T STOP TYPING IN CAPS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (sorry, but I remember fantasizing about this with my schoolfriends back in the 16-bit days and thinking about HOW AWESOME IT WOULD BE)
- A great fake anti-piracy commercial. I especially like the part about crapping in the policeman's helmet. (God, why am I so scatological lately? Between my last post about the opera-singing feces boss from Conker and this, I'm getting pretty bad...and that's not counting sitting all the way through the German priest/nun scheisse video [livejournal.com profile] jokersama showed me last night. For some reason I'm finding poo way funnier than I have since I was, like, 8.)

Also TONIGHT I BUY THE FFT PSP REMAKE WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I scare me)
Okay, I'm watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and it is by far the MOST FUCKED-UP ANIME I HAVE EVER SEEN. (And I should note that I've seen some fucked-up anime in my day!) Seriously, it's half love comedy with super-cutesy moe-moe girls, and half guro supernatural murder mystery. In addition, it's told in a kind of time loop/alternate story kind of way, so each several episode arc retelling the incident of the Cotton Drifting Festival and the subsequent events begins with "awww, they're on a picnic/at a toy store/playing club games, they're so cute" and ends with "OH GOD STOP BEATING THEM TO DEATH WITH THE BASEBALL BAT/HACKING HIM UP WITH A CLEAVER/STABBING YOURSELF IN THE HEAD REPEATEDLY, THE SQUELCHING SOUNDS ARE KILLING ME."

...Nevertheless, I can't stop watching it; it's really compelling! The mystery is quite intriguing, and I do like the characters in their cute phases (and I even like the characters when they get psycho and/or paranoid so far, in less of an "awww, I like you" way and more in a "OH GOD YOU'RE SCARING THE SHIT OUT OF ME" way). The only thing that truly disturbs me is the graphic violence that ends every arc, just because honestly, watching the end of the first arc, with one character beating two others to death with a baseball bat (heavily shadowed), disturbed me. I can't imagine what my reaction will be to the one later that I hear involves fingernail torture and dismemberment-while-alive. D:

And you know the graphic violence has to be pretty bad to disturb me, given that I've read Harry Potter incestuous skullfucking and/or necrophilia fics and seen cannibalistic guro fanart (especially of the lovable cannibals of Digital Devil Saga) and just laughed 'em all off.

If anyone else is interested in checking it out, I'd say watch at least to the end of episode 4; that brings you to the end of the first arc, and gives you an idea of what exactly the show is capable of. Don't just watch the first episode and think "aww, this is some cutesy crap, Yosi led me astray!" Because each arc may start out that way, but I can guarantee you none of them end that way; and really, the cutesiness just makes the disturbingness that follows THAT MUCH MORE DISTURBING. So, uh, if you're not fazed by graphic violence, and like a good supernatural murder mystery, check it out! All the episodes are up on YouTube: here's the first part of the first episode, and the rest is posted the same way (each episode divided up into three parts).

In non-guro news, I have decided that that last carload-and-a-half of boxes I brought from home at the beginning of the semester have finally defeated my apartment's storage capacity, so it's time for me to sell some shit. I'm still getting stuff together, but when I've got a nice sale-load of stuff, I'll put it up here (since some of y'all might be interested, especially in the fannish stuff). Some of it will be free as long as you pay postage, so keep an eye out for those too!

Let's Positive Linking!
- I Can't Defeat Air Man. A kind of awesome music video that I guess was semi-popular this past summer in Japan? (At least it was used in that NicoNico medley I posted a link to in my last entry; if you're interested in learning more about it or distinguishing which songs were used in it, check this out, or look up the original karaoke version on YouTube.)
- LOLSecretz (from [livejournal.com profile] shinkun [livejournal.com profile] tastystirfry). It's like PostSecret or [livejournal.com profile] fandom_secret, but with LOLCats, and it is AWESOME. XD
- Also, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is quite possibly the BEST WEBCOMIC EVAR.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Comics are cool)
SEMINAR PAPER IS DONE AND TURNED IN THANK JESUSU

Now which Netflix DVD should I watch, the first disc of Arrested Development or the first disc of Freaks and Geeks? It's nice to be able to make the important decisions again. XD

In less good news, apparently RPGFan lied to me, and Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm doesn't come out until the 30th. Woe. And in other news of suckitude, it appears that Veronica Mars has almost certainly (like 96% for suire) been cancelled. WOE. I hope all those bitches who were campaigning for its cancellation because their favorite ship wasn't being supported DIE IN A FIRE. AND ARE THEN FORCED TO WATCH ALL THEIR FAVORITE SHOWS TURN INTO MARMALADE BOY.

...At least I still have you, Heroes. You'll never leave me, right? No, it'll just kill off everybody D:

Let's Positive Linking!
- Speaking of Heroes... Man, this is totally my favorite show right now. If I had anyone to talk to in person about it who was as into it as I am my mania would be approaching golden-era-of-Buffy levels (back when my mom was watching it with me and we'd spend the week in between episodes discussing theories and squeeing). As it is, every Monday night and/or Tuesday morning is Heroes discussion time on IRC; it's usually me, [livejournal.com profile] jokersama, [livejournal.com profile] bemysty and [livejournal.com profile] nangke having sophisticated conversations about the show. ...okay, I'm totally lying, we're all "OMG SYLAR/HIRO/MOHINDER IS MAI LOLI" and "GODDAMMIT, YOU'RE BROTHERS, STOP TOUCHING EACH OTHER LIKE THAT."
- Oh man, this is great. It's a response to that horrifically sexist Mary Jane (from Spider-Man) statue I linked a few posts back. Someone apparently felt things should be equal-opportunity, and I bless their name...
- Although it turns out DC already did something similar. I applauded their equal-opportunity cheese/beefcake (mmmm, cheese beefcake sounds like a delicious dish)...and then I noticed the superheroes' chest hair and my brain immediately broke beyond repair. psst, Batman totally has Alfred do his manscaping, and Robin for the dirty bits.
- Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s confirmed for PS2 release July 17th. ZOMG YES. (They even have Dio! And Asia's "Heat of the Moment"! ILU EIGHTIES)
- Hot Dogs for Homophobes. I believe the title explains it all.
- Cake Flushing Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) The Hot Fuzz publicity tour is clearly SERIOUS BUSINESS (which by the way I am totally going to go see in the theater next week now that I have the time).

Edit: Oh my God, Lloyd Alexander died. That makes me so sad...I LOVED the Prydain Chronicles as a kid. Still do. ;_;
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (RAISE TEH ROOF WOOO)
Well, my brother has booked our European vacation sensation. Our itinerary )

Honestly, even though we will be crossing some of the same territory we saw last time we went Eurotripping (during Christmas break of my year in England), I don't mind at all - all the Italian cities are new, and I certainly have no problem seeing Lucerne and Paris again, since I loved both of them last time and there's plenty I didn't see in both cities (and it will be nice to be in Lucerne not on Christmas Day, so things will actually be OPEN). And of course I want to live in England eventually, so even though I've seen lots of London before I know I won't get tired of it (and then I'll hopefully be visiting Colin, so I'll get to see a new part of England too!). I'm not entirely certain where I'll be staying in England, but I've been checking out inexpensive places to stay; fortunately in London you can pretty much get anywhere from anywhere, so it really doesn't matter that much, though for sentimental value I kind of want to stay in Kingston. :D

And BY GOD I AM GOING TO HAMPTON COURT THIS TIME...I lived like 5 minutes away from it for 9 months and was too lazy to go see it until the very end, despite being a huge Tudor freak and it being a major Tudor site. Then at the end ended up not being able to go as I'd planned because I had to leave a week and a half early to go home for my dad's funeral. (Another reason I'm glad I'm going is that it'll be nice to have my most recent memories of England not be sad and tragedy-stricken.)

...In unrelated news, I've finished my Beowulf paper and final (verdict: paper not bad but not fabulously intelligent either, final didn't go great but could have been a lot worse), and now all I have to do is finish my grading for my Rhetoric class and implement the suggestions my prof gave for finishing my seminar paper. The problem, of course, is that my seminar paper is now moving at approximately 1/10000 the speed of molasses. I'm hoping to finish it tonight though, or tomorrow at the latest. (I'm also going to start my grading tonight; it'll be so nice to not have to focus on writing amazingly fabulous comments except for the few who specifically gave me a SASE or asked for comments. ZOMG SO MUCH FASTER.)

Man, I'm so ready for this semester to be over. Unfortunately my summer class starts Monday, and I've already been assigned reading for the first day of class. This is not an auspicious beginning. D:

Let's Positive Linking!
- MadTV does The Wizard of Oz. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Actually quite good; the best part is that the chick playing Dorothy totally has the Judy Garland intonation down, even when she's throttling Glinda or calling the Tin Man a homo. XD
- The opening movie for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War. ZOMG DO WANT
- Squeenix announces Star Ocean/Star Ocean 2 remakes for PSP, Star Ocean 4 in development. As a confirmed tri-Ace whore, my immediate response was to start salivating like Pavlov's shota dog.
- The most offensive piece of statuary I've seen in a while. Honestly, is this what they think all comic readers want? (Of course we must all be male, because we all know girls CAN'T read comics, and if they do it doesn't count.) Seriously, it's like June Cleaver meets Daisy Duke. Now, MJ is a sexpot, but still! The exposed cleavage, the fact that she's barefoot (though not pregnant, that might prevent her from having a26GGG figure), the VISIBLE THONG, the PEARL NECKLACE...WHAT THE FUCK. (And we're not even going to get into the fact that I'm sure, given the crap Spidey puts that costume through, that I'm sure it's machine washable, and that MJ is practical enough to do so.)
- Bobby Brown claims Osama Bin Laden wants to kill him and marry Whitney Houston. Yes, you read that right. On the plus side, Osama x Whitney would be an AWESOME COUPLE. XD
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Gay in green)
Wow, in the last like twenty minutes I pounded out a page and a half; yay for finally tackling the close reading part I really wasn't looking forward to! Also, I just got an e-mail from my brother letting me know that we're on for early-mid June for our European vacation, so things will go as originally planned: I will be taking the three-week May class and will, in fact, be able to go to Janie's wedding. Woohoo! :D

Let's Positive Linking, Celebrity Edition!
- Apparently Oprah reads [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt, whcih makes me like her even more. (However, I could have done without hearing about her Saturday vibrator habits.)
- The Top 101 UK Homosexuals. I'm kind of sad that Simon Amstell didn't make the list. Also holy crap but Derek Jacobi is gay? And Aunt Petunia and Professor Sprout from the Harry Potter movies? And David Starkey, my favoritest Tudor historian EVAR? Also, "(Derek Jacobi) won a scholarship to Cambridge where he met fellow thesp Sir Ian McKellen, who apparently had a crush on Jacobi." GANDALF THE GAY x CLAUDIUS/CADFAEL, WHUT. I'm torn between "hott" and "lolwtf." XD
- HOLY SHIT THE LITTLE GIRL FROM THE WITCH MOUNTAIN MOVIES IS PARIS HILTON'S AUNT? WTF WTF WTFFFFFFFFFF
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (NEED CAFFEINE NOW PLZKTHX)
Well, I'm throwing in the towel for today; though I didn't hit my ideal pagecount, I finished a respectable enough number of pages that I can go to bed without feeling guilty.

And that's in spite of having spent an hour or so surfing Rome tourism sites and London bed-and-breakfast sites, and getting physically homesick for England; when I think that I'll be back there in less than two months at the latest, I feel excited and happy and impatient all at once. Seriously, I have needed this for a while now.

In the meantime, I have some browser tabs I need to close, so without further ado...

Let's Positive Linking, Making Up for Lost Time Edition!
- Enjoy this fanfiction, featuring Princess Peach x Wendy O. Koopa. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama, of course.) Not only is it a rather sweet and fuzzy yuri fic, but it also contains discussion of their respective female reproductive systems. A note to the author: 1) I never needed to know about Princess Peach's first period in graphic detail, and 2) I'm fairly certain turtles don't actually go into heat, bad TMNT smutfic to the contrary.
- MadTV takes on Heroes. Highly amusing if you've seen the series, and no real spoilers if you're past like episode 4. (The Niki/Jessica bit is especially hilarious, because that's TOTALLY what I'd do if I had an evil mirror twin.)
- Strawberry margaritas are now a health food. I believe the proper reaction that is OMG FUCKING WAHOO, but then I also enjoy frozen strawberry margaritas frequently.
- Which is worse: eating still-squirming octopus tentacles, or eating whole (but miniature) live octopi? (From [livejournal.com profile] rathershady.) Honestly, I can't decide, except I'm pretty firmly on the side that NO SQUIRMING TENTACLES ARE GOING IN MY MOUTH KTHX.
- Metal Giko Solid...quite possibly the pinnacle of ASCII art. (Seriously, this shit is kind of amazing.)
- Was the destruction of the Death Star an inside job? (From [livejournal.com profile] sixteenbynine.) This isn't the conspiracy you're looking for~
- God of War II European launch party features decapitated goat, offal-eating. Animal rights activists, and people with taste, understandably protest. (Nevertheless, there's a small part of me that thinks that is hella cool, and certainly more historically accurate than canapes.)
- Speaking of wacky Europeans, Scottish Queen's Guards are videotapes half nude, spanking each other and grabbing each other's willies. Of course, The Sun is there. (Where would we be without tabloids?)
- Finally, a SomethingAwful Photoshop Phriday that's actually consistently good. The assignment? To create an 70's exploitation-style grindhouse movie poster for any film. All of 'em are at least decent, and some are GREAT.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (NEED CAFFEINE NOW PLZKTHX)
Well, one presentation down for the week (which sucked, but honestly I'm beyond caring), one to go...specifically, tomorrow afternoon I have to give my presentation on modern appropriations of Beowulf. I was hoping to hear back on whether I'd have a DVD cart tomorrow by 5 today, but I didn't...hopefully they'll let me know early tomorrow whether I will or won't, so that I know whether I need to try to hunt up something else or just forgo visual/audio aids altogether (though I sincerely feel that at the very least I HAVE to play part of one of the musical songs, and ideally I'd like to show a snippet of Grendel, Grendel, Grendel's pastel-colored crack as well).

Also, I just remembered that I should probably do our regular translation for tomorrow as well, eheheheh...fortunately it's not too long (only 70 lines) so it shouldn't kill me time-wise.

In other news, the scheduling for my and my brother's European vacation is now up in the air. We were originally looking at sometime in June or July, after my three-week summer class, but my brother (who's been applying to new jobs so that he can move back to Kansas City) was just informed by one of the places he applied to that they want to hire him, and would want him to start within four weeks or so of their offer. Even the earliest date we were looking at, in June, would still put him at six weeks before he could start work with them. Now if they wait a couple of weeks to make their official offer, we'll be fine as things stand; however, if they don't, we'd probably need to go earlier than that.

So he asked me what the absolute earliest date I could do was, and I poked around on ISIS and double-enrolled in another, more normally scheduled summer class (specifically, Kathleen Diffley's doctoral workshop). I'm double-enrolled now - obviously I'll drop whichever class I end up not taking - but that means I could have those three post-finals weeks in May free. My brother said that would work great, but the only London-to-Rome tour that would fit into that schedule would take place May 17th through 27th.

So I find myself on the horns of a dilemma. It looks like this may be the only way my brother and I can do our trip, and as a bonus it would not only be cheaper - as May is still off-season, I guess - but it makes me ecstatic to think of being in Europe in less than a month, and this final crunch period of the semester would be much easier to bear with that in mind. On the other hand, I just RSVPed a couple of days ago for the wedding of my friend and former W.C. coworker Janie, which is scheduled for May 26th, and I want to go so that I can see her and my other W.C. peeps (especially since Janie was the only one I didn't get to see when I was home over Spring Break).

I hope they take a couple of weeks to make the offer and so we can go with our original plan of early June, and that way I can both go to Europe and go to Janie's wedding. Otherwise, I will HAVE TO MAKE A CHOICE AUGH WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Let's Positive Linking!
- It's sad that this is happening in 2007. I mean, it's great that they finally integrated the prom (though why is there still a need for a "white prom," then?) but it's only like 50 years overdue.
- Final Fantasy XIII no longer PS3-exclusive. (This is old news, I guess, but I hadn't heard.)
- My Little PH-tan. This manages to be both ridiculously awesome and mildly creepy. Much like Robbie the Rabbit. XD
- Wow, this is one of the gayest music videos ever. (From [livejournal.com profile] naruto_nerd.) It's an oldie from 1979, but it nevertheless manages almost to outgay the Village People.
- What the fuck? Honestly, why in the hell would this teacher get fired? It sounds like he didn't really do anything at all objectionable, except physically acting out how someone with a gun could have stopped things earlier (which might be slightly tasteless, and I disagree with him that that is the solution to the problem, but whatever). It's especially bad since it sounds like he didn't even really get much of an explanation as to why he was fired.

...man, I'm finishing up the Christopher Lambert Beowulf right now, and it is so bad it awes me. It's actually a lot like the Mortal Kombat movie, only with worse writing (if such a thing is possible). It's like suck squared, then squared again. SUCK TO THE INFINITE POWER
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Incest is best!)
Well, got a lot of reading done during exam proctoring on Saturday, but achieved approximately nothing yesterday (as I slept late and vegetated for a large part of the day). So this balances out to my average amount of weekend work, which is not good given I have a presentation tomorrow and a presentation Thursday. WOE.

- I had not heard that Chuck Palahniuk came out. I have to admit I was highly amused by reading about the homophobic Fight Club fans who were all "NOOOOO MY MANLY COUNTERCULTURE IDOL CANNOT HAVE TEH GAY!!!1!" XD
- OHSHIT IT'S A NINJA. Seriously, this guy is awesome. Why can't we have fun shows like this? (The closest we ever got was American Gladiators, I think, which was awesome cheesy fun...whatever happened to that show anyway?)
- Also, society is officially over with. (This and above from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) That link has a YouTube video. Where a radio show in Jacksonville offered free Larry the Cable Guy tickets to people who were willing to make out with their moms. And sure enough, the mom and daughter in this video "git 'er done" with a 60-second liplock WITH TONGUE AUGH MAKE IT STOP
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (O RLY?)
Well, the progress of the plague continues...it's seemed a little better today, but I might just be imagining it. If it's still around tomorrow, I'm just gonna call the health center and see if I can get in, since I need to go over and get blood tests to get my meds renewed anyway (which I was supposed to do today, but given the fact that it was freaking SNOWING I figured I did not need to be walking two and a half miles in the snow/sleet/freezing rain and the wind in my current condition).

...Man, I really want to get better soon, though. It's hard to concentrate enough to get any work done when you're Sudafed-stoned. D:

Let's Positive Linking!
- Guitars and bears and tanks, oh my! (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Basement Jaxx has some awesomely fubar music videos, and this one set in Soviet Russia is one of the most WTF.
- Howard K. Stern hires Ramsey parents' lawyer. Yeah, that'll convince the people who believe you killed anna nicole that you didn't.
- Have some well-written Devil Wears Prada femslash. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Despite not having seen the movie or read the book, I thought it was a pretty good fic, especially since there's so little femslash out there. (It's Meryl Streep x Anne Hathaway, for the record.)
- Possible best AMV evar? Seriously, the syncing-up of the music and the action (perfect lip-syncing, even) alone is completely awesome. This one is similarly good. (Both from [livejournal.com profile] dosetsu.) I've been wanting to see this anime ever since reading an FST description about of it that made it sound like the crackish nonsense I'd probably like, so maybe this will be my impetus to check it out (after finals).

My current videogame, which I've gotten to play very little of lately (though I did play a bit today), is Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia. And it is full of innuendo. (The sad part is, that's actually one of the more innocent bits of innuendo in this game.)
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (WOES I AM SO HELPLESS AND EMO)
Dammit, it is so hot...the A/C in my bedroom broke a couple of nights ago, and so now if I want to get any sleep at all I have to sleep in my mom's recliner in the air-conditioned living room because if I try to sleep in my room I will BE ROASTED LIKE CHESTNUTS OVER AN OPEN FIRE. Then when my parents get up in the morning I generally catch a few hours of z's in their air-conditioned room, so I'm doing okay. But still, sleeping in the recliner is making my neck sore. >_<

From IMDb:
Sitcom About Gay Rock Star Won't Air
A planned ABC sitcom produced by Elton John and his longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin, about a gay rock star will apparently never see the light of a TV tube. According to Fox News, the show, titled Him & Us, which was to have starred Anthony Head as Max Flash and Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall as his manager Samantha, was not picked up despite initial favorable reaction to the pilot. In an interview with The Stage magazine, Cattrall remarked, "It would have been a great series. Perhaps the subject matter might have been too much for some people."

...they were going to do a series with Anthony Stewart Head (a.k.a. Giles on Buffy) as a campy gay rock star being managed by Samantha from Sex and the City? And now it's cancelled? WOES

Anyway, what interesting stuff has happened this week...well, my parents have been having car trouble again (we took in their car Monday morning and just got it back this afternoon, and their bank account is $900 lighter), so I still haven't been out to get my learner's permit. I hope to do that and maybe go to the bank tomorrow, but God only knows whether that'll happen.

Also, yesterday I hung out most of the day with [livejournal.com profile] rathershady and [livejournal.com profile] courters28; they had never had Jack Stack (oh deprived children! never mind that they're both older than me) so we went and they discovered the awesomeness that is the Fiorella family barbecue sauce. Then we played Vinnie's board game Ticket to Ride, which was pretty fun (and which I won, w00t).

And this evening my stepdad dragged me and my mom to Mike Burstyn at Kehilath Israel. (Here he is on the IMDb.) I knew about him because he's the son of Pesach Burstein and Lillian Lux, two of the big Yiddish stage stars (his father was the subject of the documentary Der Komediant) and he's been on the Yiddish stage himself (and later Broadway) since he was a child. And you can kind of tell he comes from the Yiddish stage, because his patter was quite close to what I've heard of those of the entertainers at the classic Catskills resorts (you may have seen them in movies like Dirty Dancing and Sweet Lorraine). A sample joke:

My father once told me the joke about the tribe of Jewish cannibals they found in Africa. Have you heard it? See, one cannibal says to the other, "I hate my meshugginah [crazy] mother-in-law." "Then just eat the noodles," his friend tells him.

Still, he seemed nice, and the jokes were funny (if groaningly horrible). And his singing was quite good as well, though it seemed like everything he sung was either in Yiddish, from like 1958, or from musicals he'd starred in that I'd never seen, like Barnum (in which Glenn Close was discovered as his costar); the only one I recognized was "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof (since apparently he finally got to play Tevye in a recent Mormon production in Salt Lake City XD). Still it was fun and I'm not sorry I went.

The synagogue where it was being held was pretty interesting in and of itself...I'd only ever been to Reform temples before, and KI is Conservative, so I was slightly taken aback at being presented with a kippah (a.k.a. yarmulke, for you Yiddish speakers) that I had to put on before I could enter the sanctuary. It didn't help that it wouldn't stay on my less-than-obedient hair. XD

I discovered on my way out that apparently there was a place you could get hairpins to hold it on that I just hadn't noticed. D'oh.

I was also not expecting folks to just be wandering around and chatting to each other during the event itself; I guess Conservative synagogues are laxer about that kind of thing, but it just seemed rude. Also, when I used the bathroom I counted no less than three old men who were talking on their cellphones as they used the urinal. Seriously, folks, if you can't detach the cell phone from your ear long enough to take a piss, you have a serious problem. >_<

Let's see, what else...Oh yeah! I also watched Ladies in Lavender with my parents earlier in the week. Our thoughts )

Let's Positive Linking!
- Hapsburgs retake Dracula Castle. It sounds like an alternate history plotline, but it's true. Those wacky Hapsburgs.
- Army refusing to put wiccan symbol on soldier's tombstone. Seriously, what the fuck. Just slap the frickin' pentacle on the tombstone instead of stonewalling, army!
- Running backwards apparently the new hot exercise. Freaky.
- And for any of y'all in the Chicago area who are interested in cake (and who haven't seen this already, which limits it to probably none of you), [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon has opened her Janaderia for business (metaphorically speaking, there is no actual building, just the opportunity to commission tasty tasty cakes).

...dammit, and I didn't even get around to my rants about the victim competition that takes place in postcolonial/feminist/race/gender theory, or about the Southern myth that everyone was either white gentry or black slave (and smear campaigns against folks like the author of God's Little Acre that actually wrote about poor white people and the downside of their circumstances) or the failure of feminist literary scholars to do anything with women authors like Pearl Buck (who I'm fairly certain was the first female to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, and certainly the first American woman to do so; but it took Oprah to even bring her books back into print). I guess those will have to wait for another day!
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (It's time for sweets!)
Wow, today I got absolutely nothing done. (Aside from a mild bit of cleaning.) I did, however, eat a crapload of junk food. I had snacks left over from [livejournal.com profile] iowayehudit's party last night, plus some others I'd bought, so I ended up eating a third of a box of Cheez-Its, several handfuls of Doritos and over a pound of Twizzlers this morning. HOLY GOD I'M OUT OF CONTROL. D:

Anyway, I DID manage to watch the new episode of Ouran High School Host Club, as well as giving Gakuen Heaven a try. And had retarded chats with [livejournal.com profile] enkiae and [livejournal.com profile] bemysty on IRC about them. XD

madness lies within )

Then this evening I went over to [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis and [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic's to watch Outland, a cheesy '80s sci-fi movie loosely based on High Noon, with Sean Connery and lots of exploding heads due to depressurization. It was not half bad, surprisingly (given Connery's track record with sci-fi *cough*Zardoz*cough*)!

Afterwards Jess was having a craving for cake, so we all piled in and went to DQ to pick up an ice cream cake. Then we came back and ate some while watching Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, which was on TV and was kind of awesomely funny and is worth watching if for nothing else than Neil Patrick Harris (a.k.a. Doogie Howser) snorting coke off an anonymous hoochie's ass while standing up in a moving (stolen) car - while playing himself. XD

After that, though, both Jess and I were craving greasy burgers (damn the prominent White Castle product placement!) and so we dragged Travis off on ANOTHER food run, this time to Steak'n'Shake. (Mmm, burgers.) Then he and I dropped Jess off and Travis brought me home, where I sent him back with my PS2 and some games to borrow (since I'm gonna be gone for three weeks, SOMEONE might as well be enjoying them till I get back!).

Let's Positive Linking!
- Yaoi manga have gotten very cracktastic. This is from Sakurai Shushushu's Vibrator Company, a heartwarming story of the gay love between two vibrator salesmen, currently being posted on [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_daily. How can you not love a manga with this kind of crack?
- And another awesome parody trailer, this time for Titanic 2: Jack's Back (sadly, not as a zombie). This amused me far more than it should have, probably because I'm sleepy.
- Best quiz EVER. (From [livejournal.com profile] rathershady.) Seriously, it's quite accurate. XD
- On eBay, a very pretty antique bed set that happens to be the one Lee Harvey Oswald was conceived on. Seriously, I'd totally buy it if I had the money, it's very pretty!
- Kit-Kat + Ringu = DELISHUS, apparently. (From [livejournal.com profile] enkiae.) Of course, the Skittles video game came long before. XD

...I leave for Kansas City tomorrow (well, today now) afternoon. So I'll be in KC in less than 24 hours.
