You know, it's a shame De Sade didn't work out on me - most of theory class today revolved around leather-wearing gay bikers and butch bull-dykes, so it would have really been appropriate to wear, even though I'm like the farthest thing from butch EVAR.

I actually do enjoy gender studies - it and feminism are the two theories so far that don't make me want to cut myself. However, it totally makes me want to analyze the crossdressing and gender play in shoujo manga on an academic level, which would be cool but AUGH SOME THINGS I DON'T WANNA ANALYZE.

...and okay, why in the hell did I decide to write my NaNo novel about seventh-graders? I mean, sure, I was a seventh-grader once myself, but that was a considerable while ago, and I don't know the first thing about how seventh-graders talk now. So writing them to sound convincing is kinda making me want to tear my hair out. Maybe I should move them up to high school early. >_<

And finally, a meme from [livejournal.com profile] surlykitty:

It's so funny...when I was in England, I mentioned Cornish pasties (pronouncing it "paste-y", like the stripper gear) and got lots of yelling and flailing that no, it's PAST-y. XD

No, but there is a streetcart here in Iowa City serving "Pop's Hot Italian Beef," which amuses me and scares me in equal quantity. XD

Haha, gender studies, and specifically feminism, are the two studies that make me want to cut myself. The Awakening really killed any interest I might have had whatsoever for these subjects >_>.

Well, I will admit, The Awakening was not my favorite work ever. I realize that it's a female author, and it's about a woman who does things frowned upon by society, but I refuse to believe suicide = empowering. >_<

But dude, there's so much fun stuff to look at in feminism, and it's done so much good stuff! (I know Kate Chopin was a drag, but feminism is basically the reason we have ANY female authors in the canon - before that, there were just a few like Emily Dickinson and Jane Austen and George Eliot, who while they're great definitely conformed to a certain societal stereotype for women.) And as for gender studies...how can you not like reading about genderbending and alternative sexualities! Plus, so much of it is reading gay subtext into stuff, which I enjoy doing anyway. XD

I think people whine less about finding the gay in that than, say, in Othello. XD

(BUT IT'S SO TOTALLY THERE AND SO COMPLETELY OBVIOUS HOW CAN PEOPLE NOT SEE IT)
From: [identity profile] jantalaimon.livejournal.com
some people wouldn't see/admit to TEH GHEI if it bit them in the...no, wait. some people wouldn't see/admit to the ghei if it smacked them in the...no, wait, that's not right either.

aha!

remember, some people took Starship Troopers seriously. XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

there's not a whole lot you can do about some people, except keep talking + hoping maybe one day something might get through.

well, that and the beatings, but we don't like to talk about those in public...XD
From: [identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com
I just don't understand how people could miss it. In something like Othello, for example, THE MEN ACTUALLY HAVE A MOCK MARRIAGE CEREMONY COMPLETE WITH RING. How much more obvious can you get? XDDDDD
From: [identity profile] jantalaimon.livejournal.com
oh, that. they're just playing, you know. they're so comfortable with the fact of their non-gheiness they...

...nope, you're right, i have no idea how people miss that, either.

in high sk00l, we had to watch the version of Othello with Larry Laurence Fishburne. IIRC, that was in there. still, it was a topic never discussed in my AP english class. then again, it was a very religious school. i still find it hard to believe no one noticed, though. :P

If you want to know how seventh graders talk, I could give you my brother's SN. Haha. He's an eighth grader, but he hasn't been for long, ya know. Here's a good rule of thumb, if you want to pull your hair out after five minutes of talking to them, you got it right. They use a lot of weird sayings, like my brother has started saying "WTF" all the time...he actually says the letters. Also, they don't always know the correct meaning of bigger words, so they use them in a context that is sort of right, but also really wrong...this actually happens a lot, I've noticed all my brother's friends do it. For example, last year they all thought kinky meant "weird"...I told them that was not the case, but I didn't have the heart to tell them they had been talking about the snow being sexually experimental. Shorter sentences are usually better, especially when they are talking to another seventh grader, unless the characters are girls. They usually have a better grasp on vocab and sentence length.

Hmm...yeah, just ask me if you want any advice or want me to read some dialogue and see if it sounds right. I am an expert on seventh graders since I have two brothers that age and there are always tons of them over visiting my brother. :)

Yay! I may take you up on that and have you vet the speak, since I know like no seventh graders (my younger stepbrother is long past it, and my baby brother is a long ways away from it).

Though I have been known to say "dubba tee eff" out loud, too. -_-;
