gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Gremio's "special stew" (by Jeanne of VG)
It's book rec time again!

First off, we have This Rough Magic, by Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint and Dave Freer. It's the sequel to their previous book, Shadow of the Lion, which I'm fairly certain some of you have read (I think it was [livejournal.com profile] angrybabble who posted a review of it on her LJ). It focuses on a few of the major characters from Lion - specifically, Benito and Maria, the two former proteges of Caesare Aldanto, and Prince Manfred of the Holy Roman Empire and his keeper, Erik - and it's a fitting sequel, I think. (Though I'd have to recommend starting with the first book if you're new to the series - otherwise you'd be a little lost.)

Next, we have Seduced by Moonlight, the newest in the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton (author of the Anita Blake books). I liked the previous two books (A Kiss of Shadows and A Caress of Twilight), but I think this one is the best. I like the way Merry's evolving, and this book raises some new issues about Merry's powers. (I especially like Merry's new abilities, though WTF is up with the chalice?) Not to mention the fact that she's finally realizing what a whiny moron Frost is! The real treat, though, is that she's FINALLY toned down the sex overdose from her recent previous books. (Now let's just hope she does the same with the Anita Blake series.) I do wonder what the next book title will be, though...Screwed in Sunlight? Raped by Rainbows?

And finally, a book by a new author - Daughter of the Game, by Tracy Grant. I thought it looked interesting at the library and then remembered I'd read a good review of it on Mrs. Giggles' web site and picked it up. Boy, am I glad I did. It's a really good mystery set in the Regency era (about 1820 or thereabouts), and it centers around Charles and Melanie Fraser, a happily married upper-class couple. He's a radical MP, she's a society hostess, and all seems to be well. Then one day their son Colin is kidnapped, and his ransom is an heirloom ring that will give whoever has it major political leverage in the struggle between the Spanish monarchy and rebels. In their race to find the ring and save their son, Charles and Melanie both find that the other has been keeping secrets from them, and the things they learn in the course of this mission shake the foundations of their relationship and their world completely to the ground. The internal tension between Charles and Melanie is really good - I COMPLETELY buy these as real people, despite their soap-operatic circumstances. I'd love to read a series about these characters...and it seems that the author has written another book featuring these two, so I'll have to try that one out too.

Uh-oh, I have to walk over to the Administrative Center to drop off some fliers. Grump.
