gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Mellow dude)

Lately I've been listening nonstop to the album Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! by Hellogoodbye. It's almost painfully cute synthpop occasionally verging on the pop-punk, which probably explains why I like it. They also have pretensions of indieness (for my own values of "indie"), specifically to the point of mildly clever but pointless wordplay that they clearly are very proud of and think is much more meaningful than it actually is (see also: Fall Out Boy). Still, their music is catchy and hummable and cheerful and energetic, which generally means I will probably like it. XD

Amusingly, when [livejournal.com profile] angrybabble first recommended it to me, she thought it might be too candy-sweet even for me; I had to remind her that, hello, I OWN THE FUCKING S CLUB 7 MOVIE. XD

Anyway, I imagine everyone who's at all interested in that kind of music has heard them, especially as they're popular enough to sell their albums in Target (which is where I picked up their full album last week after listening to the MP3s on repeat for a while), and so I imagine they're probably getting at least some airplay. But in case there's someone out there who hasn't, and thinks they might like 'em, following are YouTube links to the songs I like most:

"Baby, It's Fact"
My favorite song from the album. Interestingly, the video totally diverges from the way I'd seen the song: it turns a really cute song about mutual love into a mildly creepy song about really awkward unrequited love which occasionally verges on stalking (and which eventually does get requited by the end of the video, but STILL). I still like the song though!

Other songs have YouTube links instead of embedded video, because I'm lazy and don't like breaking folks' flists.

"Touchdown Turnaround (Don't Forget About Me)" - Set to an atrociously poor Kingdom Hearts AMV in which what's happening on screen has absolutely no relation to the song...it SEEMS to be Sora/Kairi but I honestly can't tell, it's that poor. Set it playing and then minimize the window and just listen to the music, unless you just want to see random snippets of Nomura's DRINK PAINT AND ADD MOAR BELTS AND ZIPPERS character designs. The song itself is awesome and peppy and is what got me through my Milton paper at the end of last semester, as it's the song [livejournal.com profile] angrybabble sent me to introduce me to the group. XD

"Touchdown Turnaround" (Dance Remix) - I do prefer the original, but this remix is kinda cool (and not on their album, weo). This video is interestingly set to clips from the opening and ending of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and I have to admit I was surprised not only by its general decent quality but also at how well this song goes with the Haruhi dance. XD

"Figures A and B (Means You and Me)" - An Ouran High School Host Club AMV featuring the Hitachiin twins. (Marvel at how much and how blatantly this series can imply twincest, and yet I'd say that the series at no point seriously suggests/advocates it, and that the twins feel nothing for each other than siblingly affection and a shared love of fanservicey mischief.) As for the song itself, I especially like the opening, which sounds like it should be accompanying a classic F-Zero race. (The lyrics of this song are a good example of what I was talking about earlier, though.)

"I Saw It On Your Keyboard" - A peppy, dancey song about awkward indie-rock band love. (The "video" is just the song playing while the lyrics appear.)

"Homewrecker" - This is a homemade video (not official, there is no official video yet) which is functional but kind of obvious. Nevertheless, that doesn't change the song, which I quite like for its touch of what I can only call funkiness. XD

...I spent a good portion of today at the library doing research for my seminar paper, but I feel like I've got a few of the pieces that were missing in my argument, so it was worth it overall. Now I just need to finish writing it by Wednesday evening, argh.
