Fan drama, part umpty-ump

What would y'all do without me to draw your attention to retarded fan drama? (Link is to IMDb "Serenity" board.) Basically, a guy claims that Serenity is a cheap ripoff of Star Wars. He also claims that Star Wars is OMG SO ORIGINAL, which, no. Just, NO. (I love Star Wars, and it was groundbreaking in many areas. Plot was not one of them.)
This time, though, I have to come down firmly on the side of the Whedon fans. I love Han and Leia as much as everyone else, but (even pushing aside the mostly disappointing prequels) complexity was never the series' strong suit. Comparing Star Wars to Serenity is like comparing Marmalade Boy to The Wallflower - technically they're in the same genre, but there's really no comparing them; they both have very different aims and ways of achieving those aims; they both have quality in their own right, but in comparing them, one or both are definitely going to suffer. x_x
Also, in completely unrelated news, I think I'm actually getting the hang of this grad school thing. For the first few weeks I was meek and quiet, because I was totally "everyone else is saying such intelligent stuff, and my ideas are all like DUH LOOK AT ME I R STOOPID!!!1!" but now I've gotten to the point where I've regained my MAD LIT-READING SKILLZ as well as some confidence that what I'm saying isn't completely irrelevant and might, in fact, be actually worth saying. So, yay for me?
Edit: Let's Positive Linking, Gamer Edition!
- New publisher to localize Wild Arms 4, Shadow Hearts 3. Overall this doesn't look too bad - there's a WA4 in-battle typo, methinks ("exection"?) but the story text seems to flow well. Supposedly there are English SH3 screenshots as well, but they seem to be MIA. (Fear my gratuitous acronym usage!)
- No SuikoI+II for you? Apparently the Suikocompilation will not be released over here. ;_;
- Dragon Quest VIII to be released with FFXII playable demo! Looks like someone's pulling a Brave Fencer Musashi - was there anyone who honestly bought that game for itself and not for the playable FFVIII demo? I know I bought it solely for the demo, and then was like, "hey, there's a pretty fun game packaged along with this demo!" XD
Edit 2: Whoa, this is my 800th entry. x_x

Date: 2005-09-23 01:29 pm (UTC)I would have to completely agree with you on Whedon vs. Spielsuck. Each of the characters in Firefly / Serenity has such a deep background whilst many of the characters in Star Wars are completely linear and merely convenient (Chubacca anyone?). Even Han Solo really doesn't have much of a backstory, he is just someone who happens into the movie. Compare that to the preacher in Firefly, a man who is more than he seems in every way.
Re: Congrats
Date: 2005-09-23 02:00 pm (UTC)...While I agree with your opinion of Spielberg, it's Lucas who did Star Wars. But at least you agree with me on the outcome of the metaphorical Whedon vs. Lucas deathmatch! (Joss would clothesline that bastard so fast he'd never know what hit him.)

Date: 2005-09-23 03:22 pm (UTC)(And funnily enough when I went to IMDb to double-check that, the main page poll question of the day was "Spielberg or Lucas?" See, you're not the only one who associates them!)
