Went today to see V for Vendetta with
lordtravis,
teachingmusic and
bshippotemkin. It was actually quite good (though apparently not super-faithful to the original comic book). Some of the comparisons to modern-day America were less than subtle (HI DICK CHENEY POWER-BEHIND-THE-SCENES SECOND-IN-COMMAND), and I could have done without the Hollywoodized romance subplot, but overall it has some interesting things to say and does so relatively coherently and stylishly.
(Though I can't believe some moron brought a little kid - like, 6 or 7 - to the movie, who then proceeded to ask "what's going on?" throughout the whole movie. Seriously, leave the kid at home.)
...I really don't understand people complaining that Hikaru Utada somehow "mangles English" in her J-pop songs, especially when they imply it's because she doesn't know English. Er, folks, are you not aware she's actually American (born in NYC, moved to Japan in her teens)? So it's not so much that she's mangling English as that she's liberally sprinkling her songs with katakana loanwords and phrases, which, well, is SOP for J-pop. And actually, as far as pronunciation, she pronounces them like completely normal English (at least in the songs I've heard); i.e., she sings "automatic," not "ootomatikku" or something like that.
Also,
nemissa's IRC description of the scene between Reeve and Vincent in Dirge of Cerberus now totally makes me want to play it, argh. I was figuring it'd maybe be blah and emo and forgettable, but now that I know it has at least SOME stupid crackish fubar in it, I think I need to play it. T_T
Let's Positive Linking!
- Mouse testicle cells behave like stem cells. If it holds true in humans, it would be kind of awesome, and solve the whole "stem cells are EVIL" debate (at least until conservatives start taking an "every sperm is sacred" stand, but given that that would be legislating male sexuality I'm betting they won't, even though the Bible clearly supports it *cough*Onan*cough*).
- Korean drama series becoming more popular in America. I'm merely amused by the fact that apparently we apparently aren't making enough dramatically heartwarming stories about terminally ill women suffering from "movie disease" (i.e., she faints a lot and coughs genteelly; you were great, but I'm looking at you, Finding Neverland); we now have to start importing MORE. XD
- An article about the live-action Simpsons opening, which is completely old news, but I was struck by the line: The contract extension ensures the show will be around for a 19th season in 2007-'08, meaning that The Simpsons has taken its twentysomething viewers from grade school to grad school. And it's true - I remember watching it in grade school, and I'm now in grad school. Then I did the math and realized that if it's currently in its 17th season, it started when I was in kindergarten. D:
- Mohammed Fayed wants to be the mummified minute hand of the Harrods clock after he dies. (From
surlykitty.) I...see. O_o
- Apparently a Honduran entertainment magazine has uncovered the fact that James Blunt is Neil Gaiman's evil twin! Or possibly just put the wrong photo to Blunt's name. Either way, it's pretty funny. XD
- Apparently they're doing 5 extra days of reshoots to boost Snakes on a Plane from PG-13 to R. Including to add a "muthafuckin' snakes on a muthafuckin' plane" line. (Though I have a feeling that it will be less funny, knowing that it's intentional.)
