Why, Johnny, why?

Went with
rathershady and his roommate Natalie to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this evening.
...Tim Burton, you are dead to me.*
Pros:
- Some nice visual imagery.
- A very good cast of actors, adult and child...they did the best with what they had.
Cons:
- Most of the actors (I'm looking at you, Johnny Depp) had nothing to work with, not to mention bad directing.
- It was neither darker nor truer to the book than the Gene Wilder version.
- The Christopher-Lee-as-evil-dentist-father subplot was maudlin and blech.
- Subtlety seemed to go out the window, which oddly enough made things murkier and less understandable.
- Bad songs. (I think Danny Elfman was kidnapped and replaced with the people responsible for composing American Idol singles.)
- Too many homages and in-jokes. The 2001 one was especially egregious.
Personally, if you haven't seen it I'd wait till it comes out on DVD.
* Unless Corpse Bride turns out as good as The Nightmare Before Christmas, in which case I will consider you resuscitated not unlike the title character.
In other news, cornholing and syphilis are always funny. (Props to
eikitty and
jokersama respectively.)
