Oh, my stars and garters. Disgaea has sucked me in and spit me out like...well, the first metaphor that comes to mind is quite off-color, so...like a batch of watermelon seeds. This game is digital, candy-flavored crack.
This is the most addictive game I have ever played. If it's not the transmigration system (I just transmigrated Laharl for the first time and he is now a brutally efficient ass-kicking machine), it's the Item World (where you can enter each of your items and power them up, or unlock abilities for them) or the class system (which is GINORMOUS). Oh, and the Prinnies (exploding penguins whose catchphrase is "dood"). Every RPG needs exploding penguins.
Plus the plot is quite funny, and as for the characters...I really like them. Laharl is quite brash and take-no-prisoners, but he's a big softy inside (as Flonne is daily proving). Etna is just too cool for words - I love the little anime-style "previews" at the end of each episode, spoofing various anime genres. (Though the Laharl/Etna dynamic reminds me of Ash/Misty from Pokemon, probably because the voices are similar and Etna looks a lot like Misty.) And Flonne...oh my God, I heart Flonne. She's such a dippy moron, but she's cute. Normally the "la la la, I love hearts and flowers but I can't tie my shoes" sort of characters irritate me greatly, but for some reason not this time. Maybe it's her ninja fetish, or her forthright "Nice to meet you. I'm an assassin." But I like her. :D
Oh, and it has both the American and Japanese voices, to quell all those dub-sub arguments. And the English dub is surprisingly good, except for the occasional overemphasis by Laharl's and Etna's voice actors. (This isn't Othello, kids. You don't have to read your lines SLOOOWLY AND DRAMATICALLY unless the situation calls for it.)

shinkun, isn't Rhapsody also in the same series as Disgaea, at least sort of? I know they're made by the same company, and I thought Rosen Queen and Marjoly were in that series. If so, I'll have to check it out.
I haven't gotten as far in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance yet - certainly not the two dozen plus hours I've put in on Disgaea - but it's pretty cool so far too. Montblanc has become a killing machine in my game, administering cans of chome-chome with his -ra spells. I like the way different jobs are limited to different races, and the way you learn abilities through equipping items and then earning AP, but I do miss the cohesive story and deep characters of Final Fantasy Tactics. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm early in the game, but it all seems to be random missions. It's OK, though, the gameplay system is enough to keep me going. I turned it on last night about 9:30 p.m. to play one battle (there was an ability I wanted to learn), but by the time I turned it off it was 1 a.m. x_x
Damn you, Squeenix and Nippon Ichi, for making such sadistically addictive games. I'll have you know I will be reporting you to the Surgeon General first thing in the morning.
