Sorry I have been AWOL for so long...but I am making a triumphant return to LJ! (Mostly because this is one of the few things I've stuck with for years, and would like to keep it going.)
Basically I got off-track because I had lots of long posts I wanted to do and always felt I should be doing one of those instead of doing my usual semi-stream-of-consciousness posting...but no more! Now I will post what I feel like posting again, whether it is useful or not.
New things in my life lately:
- Went to the dentist for the first time since I had to get a filling in one of my baby teeth; discovered that I (shockingly) had no cavities, but (less shockingly) have an impacted molar and four impacted wisdom teeth, not to mention a really fucked-up bite thanks to my shark teeth. So, I have oral surgery (pulling/cutting out a buttload of teeth) and hella expensive braces in my near future.
- I have not been playing that many videogames, but I have played most of Suikoden Tierkreis (verdict: awesome) and I've been playing a lot of Rock Band 2 (verdict: also awesome).
- Currently teaching an elective course ("Heroes and Villains"). Assigned texts: Beowulf, John Gardner's Grendel, Euripides' Medea, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Octavia Butler's Wild Seed, Jeff Lindsay's Darkly Dreaming Dexter (basis for the Showtime series) and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (thankfully, from BEFORE his "whoreswhoreswhores" phase). Also working on my dissertation prospectus in my surprisingly less-than-copious free time...I hope to have it done within a week or two.
- I am hunting around for a Halloween costume, since I'm hoping to go all out this year (I'm thinking I'll probably even throw a Halloween party, maybe Dia de los Muertos-themed, since I have so much Halloween stuff from Yankee Candle with which to decorate my apartment). Top candidates for my costume are all found on this totally awesome site. (It'll probably be regular clothing; sadly, the chainmail is a little out of my price range for now.)
- My current "fun reading" book is Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory's The Phoenix Transformed...I know at least
anchan218 will probably be reading it/has read it. If you have read it, what did you think of it? Other recent fun books for me have involved a rereading of the entire Valdemar series and the discovery of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera books (I already enjoyed his Harry Dresden books, but had avoided his high fantasy because a lot of even good urban fantasy writers' high fantasy books kinda suck).
- Recent televisual addictions have included Total Drama Island, How I Met Your Mother, Dollhouse, and True Blood. I also finally bought my own copy of The Vicar of Dibley, which of course meant a full rewatch while my mom was up visiting for a week. (When I pimp shows, I don't do it halfway!)
...so, what's new in everyone else's lives? (I haven't checked my LJ friends page in like four months, so if y'all have had any major life developments, let me know!)
That is all for now. More to follow at some point soon(ish).
