"Rhetoric" is just the U of Iowa's name for a combination freshman composition and public speaking class, which is required for graduation. (However, I'm teaching the version that focuses just on public speaking, for those who have already taken freshman comp somewhere else.)
I'm in my fourth and last semester teaching it; starting next year I'm teaching Interpretation of Literature, which is much more up my alley. XD
And actually, you're right: they don't have to sit an exam, because there's no exam to sit. All they have are four major public speeches throughout the semester, and then participation in class discussion on various readings and such (plus listening to my occasional lecture on public speaking strategies and skills).
