I might have kinda sorta bought more Who DVDs that were just delivered to my door. >_>
...IT'S NOT MY FAULT, I SEE TOM BAKER'S BULGY-EYED CRAZY FACE AND I JUST LOSE CONTROL
Also, I watched the first ep of the new season of Torchwood. My thoughts:
- ...wow, the writing really has improved! I didn't really want to kill anyone through the episode and actually found all of the regulars likeable! (This is kind of a Torchwood first for me...no, wait, I guess the episode with Tosh and her lesbian alien lover didn't make me hate her really; though I did facepalm a bit, I totally understood her and sympathized with her. But aside from that not an episode has gone by without me wanting to throttle one of the main cast.)
- OHSHIT JAMES MARSTERS IS ON MY TV AGAIN...and he's pretty much playing Buffy S2 Spike with more gay, lol. (...wait, does that make Barrowman Drusilla? DOUBLE LOL.) I really like his Captain John, though. It helps that, again, the writing is on top form...the "murder rehab" bits were great. Also between the writing and Marsters' acting, you end up totally buying that Captain John is not just the jilted ex but that both he and Jack still have strong feelings for each other. (It helps that both James Marsters and John Barrowman could have sexual tension with a plank of wood, so it's not hard to buy that there's still something between them.)
- Again, how awesome is Tosh? She bets Captain John was a good wife, everyone else's just too shy. XDDDDDDDDD
- Oh my God, Gwen is leading Torchwood and doing a good job. Let me reiterate this: Gwen is a) not making me want to kill her with stupidity and selfishness, and b) is doing something other than talking to people about their feelings. OH MY GOD HALLELUJAH, SHE MAY TURN INTO AN ACTUAL CHARACTER YET. (Note that I can at least deal with her being the "emotion" person of the group; stereotypical though it may be, scenes like her talk with Tosh post-Mary made me wibble. But shit like her retconning Rhys made me HATE HER FUCKING GUTS AND WANT HER TO DIE for much of S1, so I'm hoping this marks the end of that shit, seriously.)
- ...CAPTAIN JOHN WEARS PARALYZING LIPGLOSS. HOW AWESOME IS THAT, SERIOUSLY
- I'm coming to realize John Barrowman is really only a good actor when he's being cheesy and/or comic; this is why he works on Doctor Who but so much of his work on Torchwood (which insists on reminding us all that it is DARKER AND EDGIER every 5 minutes or so, at least in S1) leaves me sort of giggling nervously in pained pity for his performance. So I'm glad they're letting him run with the cheese a little more in TW (and that they've finally stopped pretending that a show featuring a fembot vs. a pterodactyl, in what was actually one of the more emotionally affecting episodes of S1, is super-serious).
- ...seriously, John Barrowman is SO CHEESY. Even Noel Clarke (Mickey) says so! He's like a gay matinee-idol Troy McClure! (Also, in possibly related news, I can now refer to him as nothing other than "Barrowman," in the exact tone and accent used during his episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks by Simon Amstell. So when I write "Barrowman," imagine it being said like that and you'll have a good idea of how I say it. XD)
And because I can't make a Torchwood post without posting this video, which embodies everything about S1 of the show to a tee:
