gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Not THAT Prince)

Haha, UI is having a daylong seminar on Hegel and German philosophy next week. I find myself amused that they decided to call it the "Iowa City Hegel Fest." XD

Anyways, on with the Suikoblog. (Notice I now have an icon for it!)

When [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis was over the other day, he asked whether the hero was a boy or a girl. I guess it's true this is the most androgynous Suikohero yet! XD

Okay, we left off with Prince leaving Sol-Falena for Stormfist, to prepare for the Sacred Games that will choose the future husband of his sister Princess Lymsleia. Most of the trip is relatively uneventful, but near the end there's suddenly an attack of lizard monsters. We find out that Sialeeds is scared of lizards...it's kind of funny to watch the normally snarky, world-weary Sialeeds shrieking like a little girl. XD

Anyway, another ship pulls up and shoots arrows at the lizards, killing them (but indiscriminately enough that it's a miracle that Sialeeds and Prince didn't end up biting it). It turns out to be Gizel Godwin, the son of Lord Godwin (who controls the Stormfist area) and Sialeeds' former fiance. Who's now entered into the tournament in hopes of marrying her niece. AWKWARD.

Anyway, Gizel is rather quickly revealed to be a slippery, sleazy type who's always scheming. Surprise, surprise. XD

He takes Prince and his party on a tour of Stormfist's arena, where the Sacred Games will be held. There they meet Euram once again, who is watching a practice match between his gladiator, Zegai, and Gizel's, Childerich. Euram's gladiator wins, and he gloats (rather prematurely) to Gizel, who shrugs it off as only a practice match. He's pretty clearly got something up his sleeve.

Afterwards, Gizel and Sialeeds go off on their own - Georg shepherds Prince and Lyon away oh-so-casually, giving those two a chance to talk alone. Wandering around town, I meet a random dreadlocked guy who is mad about being rejected from the tournament because he's from Armes, Falena's rival country. He wanted to marry Lym, but quickly shifts his sights to Lyon, who is clearly uncomfortable with his rather blatant attentions. XD

Lyon and Georg notice a guy following the party, and pounce on him. He turns out to be one of the gladiators from the Sacred Games, named Shoon. He's escaped the gladiator compound illegally, and he asks if he can talk with the Prince about something, so they go to the inn to get some privacy.

Meanwhile, we see Sialeeds' meeting with Gizel. She rather sadly remarks that he used to be such a nice straightforward boy, but not so much any longer. Gizel, in what seems like a rare moment of honesty, reveals that he really did idolize Sialeeds back when they were engaged, and asks whether she felt any kind of affection for him. Sialeeds merely tells him that it was probably a good thing for both of them that the engagement was called off. And dammit, now I feel sorry for Gizel, something I totally did not think was possible given his utter sleaziness. D:

Back at the inn, Shoon tells Prince that the gladiators have been hearing mysterious voices in their dungeon cell. Voices that have an Armes accent (Armes being Falena's enemy country), and that talk about killing the Queen. So he asks if the Prince will return with him to the cell through the secret passage he knows about (that's how he escaped). He leads them through a basement passageway dungeon thing, where they meet a man named Egbert Aethelbald whose family formerly ruled Stormfist but was displaced by the Godwins a century ago. Now he lives in the sewers like a homeless person, and has the funniest curses for Godwin. XD

Anyway, at the other end is the gladiators' cell. The weird voices are being heard again, and Lyon notices that the section of the wall over there very much resembles the secret passage they just emerged from. Georg kicks the door open (XD) and they discover Euram's gladiator, Zegai, and two Armes spies. Prince and co. run after the Armes spies through the passage, emerging in the Western Woods, and kick their asses. XD

Anyway, Zegai, who turns out to be originally from Armes, is arrested for treason. Because, of course, if he'd won Arshtat would have greeted him personally, and he'd have had a chance to kill her. Euram is of course horrified that his gladiator has been disqualified. Since he can't scrabble up a gladiator with any chance against Gizel's at this point, he's basically out of the running for Lym's hand.

Then we see a conversation between Gizel and his father, Lord Marscal Godwin, in which Marscal berates his son for his scheming. It turns out that Gizel in a roundabout manner leaked the information about the secret passage and Zegai being Armes to the Armesians [is that the term?]. And it turns out the Prince played right into his hands. Ooh, tricksy!

Anyway, then the Sacred Games themselves begin! The inaugural match is between Prince and Shoon, in which the Suiko5 duel system is introduced (basically the same as every other Suikoden's duel system) and of course I whup his ass. Afterward, Lymsleia rushes in to talk to her brother (accompanied by her bodyguard Miakis), looking all panicked.

Lym: Why did you win that match? If you keep winning, I'll have to marry... No way! Brothers and sisters can't get married! You know that, brother!
You have a choice between "Hah, I didn't know that!" or "Ah...hello?" I, of course, pick the first choice.
Lym: What...?!?! (her panicked portrait is so cute XD)
Lyon: Stop it, Prince, you'll give your sister a heart attack! (to Lym) It's just a formality to open the games, he won't be participating in any more.

Lym then turns to Miakis, since she's the one who told her that if Prince kept winning she'd have to marry him. Miakis, in her usual sneakily cute manner, says "it's just that you get all cute and flustered when you're embarrassed!" Lym, of course, is all "flustered?! DIE PLZKTHX"

...dammit, Lymsleia's brother complex should not be so cute. orz

Anyway, then they all go to watch the ensuing matches. After the first, Lym starts to feel ill because of all the violence (remember, she's only like 10). She wants to go to her room, but Arshtat tells her she can't; after all, all these men are doing this for her, and if she can't stomach the violence of a generally safe contest of prowess, how will she handle it when she's Queen and men are dying in her name. While it sounds stern, it's actually very caringly phrased in the game.

...DAMMIT GAME STOP MAKING ME LIKE ARSHTAT

Anyway, in one of the matches, a dark horse named Belcoot ends up winning. The Queen's Knights point out his deftness in battle, and when one of them calls him a barbarian, Ferid brings up that was even more of a "barbarian" back then. The Knight, of course, is all "oh, I didn't mean--!" but Arshtat just jokingly agrees with Ferid that he was much more of a barbarian, and it's all so cute and ARGH WHY IS THIS FAMILY SO LOVABLE WHEN I KNOW IT WILL ALL GO HORRIBLY LATER ASHFSGKL ...Anyway, they're all so impressed with Belcoot that Prince, Sialeeds, Lyon and Georg all decide to go meet with him and bring back their impressions to the Queen and Ferid.

After the final match, Lym - who looks rather haggard - staggers off to her room, but not before her mom lauds her courage in staying. Lym, rather weakly, points out that "maybe I'm stronger than I thought, because you are my mother and father after all." Which is all very cute, and now I start quietly hating Konami because when the bad stuff starts going down I expect this game may actually make me get all choked-up and/or weepy. T_T

...and I've actually gotten way farther, but I'll stop here because this Suikoblog is plenty long enough already. XD

And now a meme from like everyone and their brother:

Let's Positive Linking!
- The Kingdom Hearts vibrator. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) One wonders what Disney thinks about this. XD
- An article about willing amputees. (From [livejournal.com profile] naruto_nerd.) Seriously, that is one of the more freaky mental disorders I've seen.
- The Gospel of Judas Iscariot. And more here about it. I'd kinda like to read it~~
- Wizards of the Coast releases a My Little Pony RPG...or not. (From [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon.) But as far as April Fool's jokes go, that was a pretty good one.
- Man blows off hand by using live 40mm shell paperweight to squash bug. Guess who today's Honorary Darwin Award recipient is! (It has to be honorary because he didn't actually die.)
- An entire site of Brokeback parodies. My favorites are Brokeback Mount Doom (from [livejournal.com profile] dj_jonny_flash) and Brokeback Muppets. XD
- Ancient dentistry more sophisticated, and ancient humans had higher pain threshold, than previously supposed. (From [livejournal.com profile] bshippotemkin.) I still wouldn't let those things anywhere near MY teeth. XD
