Last night I had the weirdest dream. I only remember the last little bit of it before I woke up this morning.
I was in a big house which was haunted (well, more like evil, in a Silent Hill kinda way), but for some reason I could turn that on and off at will. When I finally turned it off and made it out, Tatsuya from Gilgamesh was lying on a beach chair outside sunbathing. (This is in a grey, rainy city, by the way.) Then I remember running into some people I knew, who were talking about in a few days going out to a club named Oceania. I recognized it as a club in Kingston - at this point I realized we were in England - and was all, "oh, definitely, let's go, I have friends in Kingston and I can meet up with them there."
Then I left the people I knew and went home to where I was staying during my time in England - it was like a block of flats up on a hill - and tried to decide what I should do next. Then I realized that I'd been in England for two weeks, and it was during the school year so I'd been missing all my classes back home. And I hadn't done any of the things I was hoping to do in England - like, research, or seeing my friends there. And I realized that I'd bought my roundtrip tickets for a one-week stay and I'd stayed two weeks, so I'd missed my flight back and wasn't sure I'd be able to afford another flight.
So, kinda panicky, I figured "okay. It's Friday night. I need to be back by Monday to go back to classes, so I can spend tonight wandering around Kingston (apparently I was IN Kingston and hadn't seen my friends) and tomorrow at the library researching, then on Sunday I can fly back." So I went wandering around Kingston (which in no respect resembled real-life Kingston, but it's kind of the way Kingston always appears in my dreams), and ended up in a salon. I didn't realize where I was until a bitchy customer was all "what's HE doing in here?" and her hairdresser was like, "I dunno, but we'd much rather have HIM in here than you." So then I was going to leave when one of the hairdressers (who was very very gay) appraised me and then said I should get a haircut. I was sitting down in the barber's chair when I woke up.
And oddly enough, even though that dream had nothing REALLY to do with England - like I said, it had no relation to real-life England - I still woke up missing England horribly.
And not the people, oddly enough (because that's what I usually miss), but the places. The big Sainsbury's way out past the train station, the music/NTSC videogame shop, the little grocery store on the way back from the station where I'd often stop after a day in London...I miss it all so much, it hurts sometimes.
...Is it sad that now that I've discovered that Tanya Huff has an LJ, I totally want to friend her except I'm afraid I'd seem like a creepy fanboy? (Though I guess I totally am; not creepy - I hope - but a fanboy.) Though the fact that she likes both Charles de Lint AND Joss Whedon shoots her way up in my estimation (and she was already pretty high in it).
Also, I just joined
antiacademia, a community for grad students to vent. And now I'm sitting here like AUGH WHAT HAVE I LET MYSELF IN FOR? And given my shyness and less-than-social tendencies, why did I choose to enter a profession that centers around interpersonal relationships and public speaking? AUGH.
