Welp, today was kind of a wash academically. For my Romantic Lit class this morning, we had to read Northanger Abbey, Blue-Beard (a Gothic play), both versions of Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", and Coleridge's "Christabel". I got through all of it but Christabel, because I ran out of time and I'd read it and "Mariner" before (I wanted to focus on the ones that I hadn't read before). But guess what the professor decided to spend quite a bit of time talking about, followed by calling on those who hadn't contributed? So I pulled some BS out of my ass and hope that it sounded halfway intelligible (I think she bought it). Still, I worry.
On the other hand, in my Chaucer class today I was not only fully prepared, having done all the reading, but actually spoke in class! Several times! (Wooo, go me!) And the things I said were even marginally insightful! Of course, it helped that for a large portion of that time we were talking about homoerotic subtext in the Knight's Tale, because (as befitting someone who lists "literary slash" as an LJ interest) I can find gay subtext in everything from Jane Austen to Agatha Christie.
(And yes, Poirot and Hastings are totally getting it on, as distasteful as I find the concept of Poirot getting it on with ANYONE.)
On the bright side, Radiata Stories is still qutie fun. (By the way, in case you're wondering, it's "rah-dee-ah-tah" rather than "ray-dee-ah-tah.") I've managed to recruit about 55 characters so far (out of a possible 177, but you have to play through the game twice to get them all) and I've barely progressed with the story much because I've been so busy seeing character development and recruitment scenes. It really is a lot like Suikoden, except that instead of 70-some playable characters and the rest nonplayable (shopkeepers, etc.), the whole shit-ton of characters are playable in battle. (Which totally rules, BTW.)
At this moment, some of my favorite non-story characters are: Aidan, the bratty magic school kid; Edgar, the fanboy monk; Cosmo, the genki monk; Cornelia/Rachel*, who's a 12-year-old magic school student by day and eighteen-year-old idol singer by night; Gerald, Jack's hardass superior (voiced by Jet from Cowboy Bebop); and Lily, the hardened hooker-cum-assassin.
And then of course there's the story characters. Jack has been kicked out of the Knights, and is now a Sergeant in the warrior guild, Theater Vancoor; of course he's still as retardedly likable as ever. Ridley's kind of been a nonentity recently in the game, since Jack and Ganz were kicked out of the Radiata Knights for letting her get hurt, but I recently saw the scene where Ridley (now a Captain) invites Jack to her birthday party, and while she's softened quite a bit she's still not afraid to tell off retards (who, for once, AREN'T Jack XD). This picture is a pretty good sumup of their relationship so far...Jack is alternately retarded and cute, and Ridley is alternately sarcastic and resigned. XD
And then there's Ganz. Ah, Ganz. After getting kicked out of the Knights, and failing to get in to Theater Vancoor, he gets recruited for the Bandit Guild after helping a little boy find his kitten's mother. XD During his time in the Bandit Guild, he changes clothing from his clanking Steiner-esque armor...into Claude's outfit from Star Ocean 2. XD (Well, actually, it's closer to his Star Ocean EX outfit, but whatever. The point is that it's HILARIOUS, given that instead of being the athletic young hero Ganz is as wide as he is tall.)
Let's Positive Linking!

- Nightmare City. ...I have no words.
- I thought spending the last couple of days on GameFAQs message boards had taken away all my faith in humanity. But no, then I had to go on the IMDb message board for The Constant Gardener and read arguments about why Rachel Weisz flossed her ass with a towel in a five-second scene. XD
- Some AWESOME street art. (From
jantalaimon
firestorm717. It's not my fault, they both have Crane icons!)
- Digital Devil Saga 2 has a soundtrack as a preorder bonus. DAMN J00 ATLUS T_T
Also, a news article from here; the IMDb news rotates daily, so I'm posting a copy of the article in the cut.
FEMA Promotes Robertson Charity; Ignores Secular Ones
Televangelist Pat Robertson's controversial charity group Operation Blessing stands to gain millions of dollars after being prominently included on a list of organizations accepting donations for hurricane relief, according to an article posted on the website of The Nation magazine. In fact, only two non-faith-based organizations were included in the FEMA list, one of which is the American Red Cross, which has been at odds with the Department of Homeland Security after being barred from attending to New Orleans holdouts who have refused to evacuate. The Nation pointed out that Operation USA, a prominent secular disaster-relief group, was omitted from the FEMA list. It described Operation Blessing as "a front for [Robertson's] shadowy financial schemes" and cited, among other things, an exposé in the Virginia Pilot alleging that Operation Blessing's planes had been used to transport diamond-mining equipment for a Robertson-owned venture in Zaire.
