NOOOO WHAT DID SHE DO TO JANE AUSTEN
Dec. 3rd, 2005 11:14 pmWe got more snow today. A LOT more snow. It was snowing LIKE HELL out there for most of the day, and I think we must be up to like five inches by now. x_x
In related news, now I remember why I wore hiking boots exclusively during most of my college career. Tennis shoes are nice, but in winter with 6 inches of snow you want something a littledrier more substantial. So looks like I'll have to pick up a pair of those at some point in the near future.
It's so amazingly easy to get caught up in reality TV. For example, today I went over to Tony's Grill to eat, and got caught up in the show that was playing on their TV, which happened to be Miss Seventeen (tagline: Life Begins at Seventeen). It was kind of absurd - OH NOES THEY HAVE TO DECORATE A BACHELOR APARTMENT OR BE CAMP COUNSELORS HOW CAN THEY TAKE THE PRESSURE - but oddly enthralling, watching 18-year-old girls act like...well, like 18-year-old girls...in front of a national audience. There were tears and there was backstabbing and there was hugging and it was all very saccharine and HAVEN'T WE ALL LEARNED AN IMPORTANT LESSON ABOUT HONESTY TODAY, GIRLS.
For the record, I favor Jessica for the win. She's an interior designer, which is a suitably feminine occupation for Seventeen; she's got the whole "shy girl coming out of her shell to be a leader" thing working for her; and also she doesn't seem to be an overachieving bitch. XD
I also read the most horrific book this weekend. It's called The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy, by Elizabeth Aston, and as you might guess from the title it's a continuation of Pride and Prejudice. Or claims to be - I doubt Miss Austen would go near this book with a ten-foot pole. Apparently this is the second in a SERIES, god forbid. Anyway, it actually has very little to do with Pride and Prejudice, and if it weren't for the heroine's last name being Darcy and the appearance of Mr Collins (who's now a bishop, WTF?), it would basically be a mediocre Regency romance novel. She makes no attempt to hew to Austen's writing style, and as for her plotting...well, Austen was defined, even by herself, by writing about characters in a very narrow milieu. Aston, on the other hand, sends her heroine raring off through the Continent dressed as a man and singing in a Venetian opera house as a castrato (WTF). In addition, the story is precipitated by her running off from her husband because he USES WHIPS IN THE BEDROOM ZOMG. (Which, y'know, if he doesn't get your consent is a valid reason to run away from a husband, but completely antithetical to Austen's world. In Jane Austen, women do not run away from their husbands because said husbands like to whap their behinds with a riding crop. Or at least, they would never be so crass as to actually SAY it.)
Also Alethea has four more Mary Sue sisters...I think one was the heroine of the previous book, and I'm wondering whether she'll devote books to the other two. God forbid.
...Also, I really wish that they'd make for real the Bleach love sim they did a fake teaser for, because it's so hilarious. From the subtitle ("I Want to Be Cut by the Zanpakutou of Love") to the love declarations (including those by Gin, Aizen and Mayuri!) under the Senbonzakura tree, it looks like crackish fun. XD

- Square Enix announces Final Fantasy Potion drink. (From
jokersama.) Ooh, I'd want this if for no other reason than for the pretty glass bottles. I wonder what "nutritional supplements" they'll add to it - like guarana or something?
- FameTracker has done a Fame Audit of Ralph Fiennes and holy crap, I had not realized Ralph Fiennes and Francesca Annis were together PERIOD, much less for ten years! :O
