Well, here I am again. I've survived the first two days of grad school - my teachers seem great, the class subjects seem endlessly interesting, my classmates seem nice, and I'm really excited. If I can survive the 1000+ pages of heavy reading a week, I'll do great! :D
Speaking of reading, both the libraries here ROCK. The public library, which is now my home away from home, has like three bookshelves devoted to graphic novels (and more manga than I've ever seen outside a Borders store), and an equally good selection everywhere else, it seems, with the exception of DVDs. And the university library is amazing - did you know that you can actually CHECK OUT the first edition of William Godwin's Life of Chaucer? (Godwin was Mary Wollstonecraft's "husband" and Mary Shelley's father, FYI.) And you can also check out the 1820 edition (which I think is the first) of Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story (one of the FOURTEEN BOOKS assigned for my Romantic Lit class)...except it's already checked out by one of my fellow students faster on the draw. KURSES.
Anyway, I'm settling in a little better. My freezer had broken, but now it's fixed. (Because I have a good hands-on landlord, which is an asset worth its weight in gold as an apartment dweller, so I gather.) I'm running a little low 'til my first fellowship check comes through on September 1st, but I think I'll do OK. My final check(s) from my dad's retirement, on the other hand, SHOULD be coming on Sept. 1st also, but because apparently the stupid feds at the Office of Personnel Management don't think I'm a full-time student (uh, dudes, I'm taking TEN graduate-level hours...what more do you want, sweating blood?) and so i need an official university form to prove I'm full-time. Which, of course, even if I can get it and get it sent by the end of the month, will take two weeks to be processed by the moronic paperpushers in the OPM bureaucracy, so I won't get that money till October. >F
Uh, lessee, what else...oh yeah, I'm doing more walking even than I did in England. I'm seriously walking like a gazillion miles (not really) every day, since I live about 20 minutes walk from campus and town and generally walk back and forth between home and there two to three times a day, plus often up to the Kum'n'Go (XD) or the Co-Op if I need any groceries or anything, which adds several more blocks to the total. But my legs ache now. Hopefully it will pass soon. :(
Anyway, I have to go start on my 800 GAZILLION PAGES OF READING HOLY FUCK WHAT THE HELL AUGH for tomorrow, so I'll sign off for now. (Oh, and I also have a paper due ON THE SECOND DAY of my Canterbury Tales class. What have I gotten myself into? *weeps*)
But tune in next week - same bat-time, same bat-journal!
