Welp, today I got the formal notification of my fellowship to Iowa, and it turns out that it's actually even better than I'd thought. Rather than being the second-to-best one, it turns out it's actually THE best. :D
So it's actually $18K/yr for the first and fourth year (during which I don't have any work responsibilities), and research or teaching assistantships for years two and three. This is in addition to tuition and health and dental insurance all four years. Also, since they know most don't finish in four years, there's another two years of TA/RA guaranteed. Overall, it adds up to about $125,000 over four years or almost $160,000 over six. :D :D :D
(It's kind of funny - the past couple of weeks have been a major rollercoaster, going from real high highs to real low lows, so I'm feeling kind of schizophrenic at the moment. Am I happy? Am I not? Am I both? Who knows?)
This afternoon I had to take my major field exam, which is a requirement here to graduate. (And here I thought the GRE was the last standardized test I'd ever take - ha! I should have known better.) It's kind of pointless, but it's another hoop jumped through and I'm that much closer to graduation. God, I'm looking forward to getting out on my own.
Oh, and I had a package arrive from Amazon.com today containing The Sims 2 and its University expansion pack. Oh man, the university part is SO REALISTIC. I currently have a whole bunch of my friends (my coworkers, my flatmates from England, and some of my other friends) living in the same dorm, and it's funny how each Sim is so like in personality to its template and how they're completely in character. (Also, I pride myself on having made my Sims actually look like me and my friends, which was no mean feat.)
It's also scarily realistic how accurate a simulation of college life it is. (My year in England, which was my only time in a dorm away from home, I lived EXACTLY like this - more hanging out than anything because there was always someone to talk to, but the occasional computer/video game or class.) Once my Sims have a drunken party and subsequent property damage, it'll have completely summed up my entire year in England! XD
