An interesting little tidbit I picked up from my class in Human-Machine Interaction: having the four knobs arranged in a line at the front of the stove is actually the worst possible setup from an object association standpoint. The best arrangement is a knob next to each burner, but obviously that's a physically cumbersome setup.
But here's an interesting thing: if you actually have lines drawn on the stove linking each knob to each burner, the problems with object association immediately vanish. Even if you don't consciously notice the lines (e.g. they're part of some patterned surface or something) your brain will match the right burner to the right knob almost all the time.
