...You know, it should probably worry me that a lot of my views on life, love and all that fun jazz come from Fruits Basket's Tohru Honda and the novels/stories of Charles de Lint. XD

Still, I do think they're generally good idea to live by, and the fact that they came from someone else's brain doesn't change that. And the fact that neither Natsuki Takaya nor de Lint are great statesmen or philosophers or sports players doesn't make their message less valid.

This evening I watched Spirited Away at [livejournal.com profile] rathershady's house. As per usual Miyazaki films, it was excellent; sweet and full of wonder without being cloying. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Ghibli is going to do with Howl's Moving Castle - I have no doubts they'll pull it off, it's just how I'm wondering about.

Also, it's always interesting checking out the voice acting credits. Sen is played by Daveigh Chase, best known as Lilo and Samara from The Ring; Chihiro's father is voiced by the redoubtable Michael Chiklis, who I didn't even realize did voice acting but who has apparently been doing a decent amount of it lately; and Yubaba's baby is played by Tara Strong, who's been voice acting since she was like 12 and has been in every conceivable cartoon in which they used voice talent, but whose most notable roles are probably The Powerpuff Girls' Bubbles, Rugrats' Dil Pickles, and FFX's Rikku.

Afterwards, Vinnie showed me trailers for quite a few upcoming movies:

- A Scanner Darkly, the new Richard Linklater film that's based on a Philip K. Dick story. It uses much of the same visual style from Linklater's Waking Life (which I haven't seen but which looks really cool). This could be good, but on the other hand it has the Keanu factor, which is not in its favor.

- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which you should all be prepared to go see anyway. It looks like they're being relatively faithful to the books, and the fact that Alan Rickman is voicing Marvin gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

- The Fantastic Four, which looks so dire I don't think even Ioan Gruffud can save it. Between Chiklis' bad Thing makeup, the whole "Dr. Doom is just like them" thing, and the mere fact of Jessica Alba's existence in the film, things aren't lookin' good.

- And Sin City, which I'm withholding judgment on. It has a LOT of, if not big-name, at least recognizable-name actors (and there are a few, like Bruce Willis, who are definitely big-name). There are even some that I like, such as Brittany Murphy and Nick Stahl. On the other hand, there are quite a few actors in the movie who either tend to choose bad projects or generally function as black holes of suck - the aforementioned Alba, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, etc. Still, it could be interesting.
