This morning there was a fire in the parking garage across the street from work. Apparently one of the cars on the third level was dripping fire(!). About five fire engines came, and used the ladders and hoses and stuff to put out the fire. I feel sorry for the poor schlub whose car self-immolated. But at least it provided a bit of excitement to brighten up my morning! :D
I've spent most of this evening playing my newly-acquired Suikoden IV (hence the new icon).
OK, so here's my short plot summary to date:
The game is about an angry-looking youngobviously gay boy and his whiny and backstabbing butt buddy best friend - in other words, your typical Suikoden game. The hero (henceforth referred to as "Hot Pants" because of his outfit) appeared years ago, washed up by the sea. He was taken in by the mayor of Razril, a city in the country of Gaien, and raised along with his son Snowe (the aforementioned backstabbing boy-bitch). They're both trained as Knights of Gaien, but on their first mission Snowe panics and chokes, and Hot Pants is forced to take command. (Though I'm sure Snowe likes it when he goes all butch and masterful.) He manages to defeat the Pirate Brandeau, but not before the pirate passes his True Rune OF EBIL on to their commander, Glen. Snowe gets jealous of his erstwhile lover friend, and when Glen dies after using the Rune to save Razril - in the process passing on his Rune to Hot Pants - Snowe accuses Hot Pants of causing Glen's death. As a result, Hot Pants is exiled and set adrift, never to return to Gaien, and at this point has washed up on a desert island with his few loyal friends who stowed away with him.
Other thoughts on the game:
- The voice acting is surprisingly decent, especially Glen and (to a lesser extent) Snowe.
- Speaking of voice acting, is there anyone who picks Voice A (the deep bass voice) for the hero? Because I can't imagine doing it. Seriously, I HAD to pick Voice B (the girly tenor)...just look at him!
- I know I've talked about it already, but DAYUM, those hot pants are striking fear in the heart of NO ONE. I half expect the headquarters theme song in this one to be "Y.M.C.A."
- The new "world map" (a.k.a. "massive ocean that I have to steer a ship around") makes me want to throw up and die. Or alternatively, strangle the game designer who thought it was a good idea.
- Wow, they're doing a really good job of making me hate Snowe. I didn't even detest Jowy from Suikoden II this much, and he actually sold the good guys out to the baddies, rather than just being spineless and CYA-obsessed like Snowe.
- In Hot Pants' and Snowe's "Friendship Attack" (psh, "friendship"...yeah, right), after using it in a battle, instead of the normal victory screen you get Hot Pants and Snowe raising their swords (to salute themselves, I suppose). But what I think is a nice touch is that when they do it, Snowe glances furtively over at Hot Pants, and then looks back away, and then Hot Pants does the same, glancing at Snowe and then looking quickly away. Indicator of future betrayal or just sizzling sexual tension? You decide!
Edit: I just realized that I really am a horrible gossip. I mean, you have no idea just how horrible. XD
