Moonlight Rhapsodia

Let's Positive Linking!
- A scan from a Michael Jackson shota doujinshi. Because even if he's been acquitted, nothing will stop the doujinshika! (Not worksafe.)
- Paris Hilton to "retire," presumably from her full career of slasher flicks and bimbo-out-of-water comedy series, in 2 years. I love how she talks about how "she doesn't enjoy going out anymore, it's such a pain." Uh, yeah, then you DON'T DO IT, you vapid twit.
- Adult Christianity, for your daily dose of sacre-licious goodness. (Possibly not worksafe, due to discussion of Christian BDSM and the like, and definitely not for the easily offended.) This is probably most well-known for the OC/Jesus "O come holy spurt" gay pr0n story (definitely not worksafe).
- I <3th Darth. Because we all know Darth Vader has iTunes installed inside his helmet so that he can listen to ABBA.

Also, the Suikosource forums have started discussing Rhapsodia: Suikoden Tactics. From my viewing of this, I've come to three conclusions:

1) Yuber fanboys are muy annoying.
2) A lot of people hate Suikoden IV, not for the inane ship movement system and less-than-stellar music, but because OMG THE CHARACTERS WERE LESS DEVELOPED THAN IN OTHER SUIKODENS!!1! ...Um, have these people played the original Suikoden? I mean, I love it, but characterization? Not its strong suit. Also, they hate it because OMG WHERES YUBER?, and are prepared to hate Rhapsodia for the same reason. (Did I mention Yuber fanboys are annoying?)
3) A lot of people also hate Snowe. Which is kind of understandable in a way, given that he is kind of an ass, but in the end I don't get it. Because really, even though he's such a whiny CYA failure, I don't understand why people hate him and love Jowy, given that his actions totally made more sense than Jowy's batshit insane actions during Suikoden II. x_x

The only reason I liked Suikoden II was the cooking contest. That is all~ :D

I just said the same thing not that long ago in another discussion. >D I wish they'd bring it back!

And I don't really get the Jowy > Snowe thing either, yosi. Maybe it's because Snowe is so obviously a sniveling coward (though that's part of what endeared him to me, go fig)? People seem to be more forgiving of lunacy than chickenwussery. Then again, everybody and his beta-reader seems to love Draco Malfoy, and he's a sniveling coward with no redeeming features whatsoever (as far as I could tell. I gave up on the HP books around #3).

[identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com 2005-06-16 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that people favor the crazies. *cough*Sephiroth*cough* But really, it's realistic to have the chickenwusses - I mean, not everyone can be swaggering, plucky young adventurers who would rather die than desert a friend! Life isn't complete without the people who value their own skin more highly than others'!

And they like Draco because he's blond and rich. And also because people seem to have an obsession with rivalslash that is completely beyond me (personally, I've never gotten the whole "he acts like he hates me, that means he actually wants to *unf* me he's actually in love with me" thing either)*, and so they need to noblify up Draco so that Harry doesn't come off completely pathetic.

* Except in a case like GetBackers' Ban and Fudou, where there's all kinds of talk about throbbing and desire mixed in with all the talk about killing. XD

I've actually managed to not let the fandom turn me off Haripo - I'm still holding on and enjoying the books, even if it is kind of ridiculous that I feel the need whenever a new one comes out to read it in one night. x_x

Who didn't love the cooking contest? Though it did kind of irritate me at times. Case in point:

Hai Yo: Oh no! Barbara's been poisoned, and unless we win the cooking contest we won't get the antidote!
*both teams cook*
*judges try opponent's food*
Rina: Delicious!
Yam Koo: It's not perfect, but it's quite good.
Sheena: I love this, I can't stop eating it!
Gadget: EVEN A ROBOT CAN TASTE HOW GOOD THIS IS.

*judges try my food*
Rina: It seems a little dry.
Yam Koo: The flavor's good, but it's a little undercooked.
Sheena: It's okay, but it could use a little more spice.
Gadget: TASTE SENSORS DETECT TOO LITTLE SEASONING.

...dammit, bitches, can't you fake a foodgasm when your friend's life is on the line? >F

I wish people would just admit they don't like Suikoden 3 (it gets yelled at a lot, too!) and 4 because they aren't sprite based. Most of the complaints for both of those games can be applied to Suikoden 1 and 2, as well.

See, sprite based characters with little development = OMGGREAT; polygon based characters with little development = OMGSUCKAGELAZINESS.

[identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com 2005-06-16 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right, but that kind of completely irrational thinking irritates me SO MUCH. It's like you always hear from the wannabe-elitist Final Fantasy fans use. "FF4 is the best game EVAR; FF7 and on SUCK!!!1!" Then when you ask, their reasons basically come down to "FF4 is 2D; FF7 and on are 3D and have evil FMV for their noninteractive cutscenes rather than having proper 2D noninteractive cutscenes."

I mean, I'm sorry, but anyone who talks about the deep plot of FF4, especially in comparison with later FFs, is either irrationally nostalgic or ON CRACK. I've seen fighting games with a deeper, more realistic plot. >_<

For the record, I'll happily play either 2D or 3D. The only time a graphical style might make me balk at playing a game is when it just looks downright butt-ugly (like, say, Dragon Warrior VII).

[identity profile] shinkun.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Its the only explanation. They just don't want to admit that they're graphics whores.

...what kept me from enjoying Dragon Warrior 7 was the constant back tracking. It just wasn't fun.

you think Dancing Queen is bad now, listen to when Wing sings it.;)

Hi, I came across your journal after browsing around for Suikoden IV related entries and just thought that I'd comment. Michael Jackson shota...what will the Japanese think of next ;;; although from this man's experience teaching there, quite a lot. Michael Jackson juice could possibly be one of the most disturbing phrases ever.

I was just about to comment about the underdevelopment of characters in all the Suikoden series (although III IMO had the most), but I think a part of it for IV is that a lot of loose ends aren't quite tied up. There's small hints, but they all dead end when pursued. For example, Sigurd and Keen's relationship, Elenor's history with Cray, and so forth. Probably a setup for the Rhapsodia sequel.

Suikoden II is by far my favorite, if only for the cooking game. So many ways of awesome. I wish they'd brought that back in IV.

I thought Jowy was a more tragic figure, but I felt the most sympathy for Snowe's his bitterness and failure, which I found easier to relate to. And come on, you have to feel a little sorry for a guy with that kind of father. Hm...which reminds me, what does happen to his father after you chase him off?

[identity profile] firestorm717.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Forgot to add, want to cross-friend? ^^ You have some interesting article links (I'm a real news whore, if you couldn't tell from the proliferation of link-related posts on my journal) and an Angel's Feather + Persona fan to boot XD. Hardly anyone I know has heard of them.

[identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, it's GAIJIN SMASH guy! I linked to him a while ago, but it's nice to see that he's got some new editorials up (even if he can at times come off as kind of a douchebag).

I'm not sure they ever say about Snowe's dad...maybe that's another loose end to tie up in Rhapsodia. :D

And sure! To be honest, I've never met another person who liked BOTH Angel's Feather and Persona before (at least, AFAIK). So, nice to meet you! :D

[identity profile] firestorm717.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ZOMG His site is hilarious! XD Everytime I see Gaijin Smash, I imagine him as a character in Super Smash Brothers or something.

Gah, Rhapsodia! I don't know much about it - what console is it for again? I haven't played a decent SRPG since the English GBA Fire Emblem (can't wait for the GC one to come out)

Lol, I'm very much obsessed with Japanese RPGs, even though my Japanese is...nonexistent ^^; I was disappointed they didn't publish Persona: Innocent Sin in English - do you happen to know what the story is? Since that background would've been useful when I played Eternal Punishment.

Have you seen the new AF game? XD So awesome.

[identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Rhapsodia is coming out in...November, I think(?) for the PS2. RPGFan has recently added some new pictures to their section on the game (http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/rhapsodia/index.html), if you want to take a look. Just from a casual glance, several more returning characters (Chiepoo and Flare) have been revealed. :D

If you're looking for SRPGs, have you tried the Nippon Ichi series (Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Phantom Kingdom)? 'Cause they're pretty fun, more than a little zany, and kick much ass.

As for the story of Innocent Sin...you can find the script translation at The Oracle of Maiya (http://yoridori.org/oracle/), but if you're just looking for a short summary, can I point you to (shameless plug) my dead webpage (http://j.students.umkc.edu/jpr4c7/) (which I'm hoping to eventually resurrect, but that won't be until I have Internet at home at the very least). Under the Persona World Guidance -> Persona Chronicle section is a translation of PWG's "event digest" for IS.

[identity profile] firestorm717.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
<3 Awesome. Need to save up, with all of these upcoming RPGs and the like. I've played some of Disgaea, heard of but not played the rest. Which one do you recommend?

Ah, thanks! That is very useful, though I suppose a script can never be equivalent to playing the game. Why did the American company license Eternal Punishment, but not Innocent Sin?

[identity profile] yoshitsune.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, my favorite is Disgaea, followed by La Pucelle and then by Phantom Brave. (I haven't gotten Phantom Kingdom yet.) I tend to favor story, which is why I liked Disgaea (whose story is kind of fluffy, but still pretty good) and La Pucelle (which has a nice beefy, though perhaps more typical RPG, story) over Phantom Kingdom (whose story underwhelmed me). Still, they're all good games, and very meaty gameplay-wise.

As for why IS was never licensed, that's kind of a tough question because there are SO MANY reasons:

1) Objectionable themes. This is probably the major reason why. Off the top of my head, you have: teens attacking their principal with weapons; a possible lesbian relationship involving one of the main characters (Yukki/Anna); a possible gay relationship involving THE main character (Tatsuya/Jun); drug use by one of the main characters; the return of Adolf Hitler and his Nazis; terrorist bombings; et cetera. Not to mention that the ending is kind of a downer.

2) Problems with localization. I believe that a lot of the time the American localization team will have some cooperation and involvement of the original developers. When they were first looking at releasing it, however, this was impossible, because the development team was already hard at work on Eternal Punishment.

3) Outdated graphics. If they'd released Innocent Sin, by the time they localized and released Eternal Punishment its graphics (with no noticeable improvement over IS) would have been considered outdated in the marketplace. (Well, even more than they already were. Though, to be fair, it's still a damn sight prettier than Dragon Warrior VII.)

[livejournal.com profile] eikitty has a good article on the problems with a domestic release kind of buried in the Oracle of Maiya FAQ - here's a direct link to it (http://yoridori.org/oracle/tsumiusa.txt).

[identity profile] firestorm717.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm...yeah, Disgaea sounds quite interesting. I have yet to see anything of La Pucelle beyond the box, and I've never heard of the other two. Heh, if there's any RPG whose story overwhelmed me, it's probably Xenosaga/Xenogears...too much scifi jargon and religious imagery I didn't care to figure out.

[identity profile] shiranaihoshi.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both AF and Persona! I do!

(Okay so this is a totally random thing to be showing up in your journal, but I was just doing a random search for Angel's Feather and found this thread.)

..And uh..we do sorta know eachother if you count that we're both in angelsfeatherbl...
