Urk, my stomach feels kind of icky...I hope I'm not coming down with something. D:
Well, I went into downtown proper (the Ped Mall area) for the first time yesterday since the tornados. It appears that reports of Panchero's demise were greatly exaggerated; it didn't even appear to have taken any damage. (Maybe it was another Panchero's? I think they're a local chain.) Really, the only visible damage in the Ped Mall itself was some damage to the roof of some of the buildings (a couple of bars, the Soap Opera) which they had blocked off. Aside from that, though, it seemed fine.
Along Burlington up towards Clinton was a different story. I hadn't realized that the block with Thai Flavors had been hit so bad - the apartment over Tony's was totalled, and the Mailboxes of Iowa City building is in really bad shape (though the apartment above it is much like that over Tony's). The Mill and Starbucks seem to have sustained some minor damage, but nothing that would keep them from opening. There also seemed to be some damage on Linn on either side of Burlington, from what I could see.
Today I went out again to buy a chocolate bunny at Osco, but it was CLOSED FOR EASTER KURSES. I guess I'll have to get one tomorrow (when it'll be super-cheap, yay!). So instead I went to the Burg and had a delicious if nontraditional Easter dinner.
Anyway, in other news I've been enjoying the anime Ouran High School Host Club. It's relatively new - they've only shown two episodes so far - but I have mad love for the manga, so I figured I'd watch it. And indeed it does do the manga justice.
First off, it IS shoujo. However, it's good shoujo, like Wallflower; it keeps the enjoyable shoujo manga tropes (cute, innocent romance) while dumping the more tiresome cliches (emo love triangles, indecisive heroines who can't make up their mind for 271438 episodes).
For those unfamiliar with Ouran, it's about Haruhi, a poor scholarship student at a SUPAR-WEALTHY school. Haru is rather unprepossessing, having messed-up hair, coke-bottle glasses and baggy, old clothes. Looking for someplace to study, Haru runs into the school's Host Club, set up by some of the more wealthy dilettantesque students. (Host = gigolo, for the record.) Even though they generally cater to women, they come on to the masculine Haruhi, figuring "a customer is a customer, doesn't matter if he's gay!" Poor Haru is taken aback and, while attempting to get away from these FREAKS, ends up knocking over a very very expensive vase. Because of this, Haru ends up the dogsbody for the Host Club...at least until its leader Tamaki recognizes that this boy is actually quite attractive with his glasses off and wearing classy clothes. He offers Haru a chance to work as the Host Club's newest host in order to work off the debt, and Haru accepts.
Of course, after Haru's managed to charm all of the other members of the Host Club as well as many of the customers, Tamaki walks in on Haru changing and discovers that "he" is actually a girl. The others figured it out long before, of course. XD
Anyway, Haru still has to work off her debt, and so agrees to continue posing as a guy in order to work as a host. And from there it's off!
The characters are really engaging...Tamaki, especially, as the narcissistic host club king who falls rather hard for Haru. Then there's the other hosts: Kyoya, the scheming second-in-command (who's "Mom" to Tamaki's "Dad"); Hikaru and Kaoru, the mischievous twins who enjoy acting homoerotically to please their yaoi fangirl customers; Hunny, who appears to be (and acts like he's in) elementary-school but is actually the oldest (being the equivalent of a high school senior) and his best friend Mori, the tall, silent super-kakkoii type. They're all adorable and fun and cute, as in the manga.
Anyway, I highly recommend this to anyone who has any kind of tolerance for cute shoujo, and if you like it you should pick up the manga (they're getting ready to release v.6, so there's a decent amount out in English).

jokersama.) EEEK I SINCERELY HOPE THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE
- One Red Paperclip. (From
rathershady.) This is pretty interesting - this guy is working on bartering things, starting with a red paper clip and hoping to work his way up to a house. He's currently up to a year of free rent in Phoenix, so it's quite possible he'll make it! :D
- The Mentos Test. (From
angrybabble.) Ahaha, this seems kinda awesome...I'll have to try it myself some day. XD
