Honestly, why was I stupid enough to pick a poet central to my Victorian seminar professor's subject area for my presentation/bibliography? (It's not like I picked this poet for brownie points or anything, I just thought she seemed interesting.) But seriously, whatever brownie points it MIGHT earn me are nothing compared to the oh-so-possible possibility that I somehow leave something major out, and of course my professor WILL KNOW. D:
Anyway, I spent hours and hours at the library today gathering up the last of my references, and now for tomorrow I just have to finish writing annotations for them, make a biographical handout on Janet Hamilton, and then come up with some questions to ask on the poems I've assigned. orz
On the other hand, I'm really enjoying the novel I'm reading for my American Lit class - Hope Leslie (online fulltext is here). It's about (at least in part) a free-spirited young woman among the Puritans - kind of like The Scarlet Letter as written by a less witty and more earnest Jane Austen. XD
Anyway, I especially like the titular heroine. She's sassy! (Especially in comparison with the dreary Puritans surrounding her.) She's also fun because she's so commonsensical - she'll cheerfully sublimate her Puritan beliefs (to which she's not too attached anyway) for a cause she feels is right, or for self-preservation, which is a nice contrast from "too stupid to live"-type heroines (which are unfortunately still all too common even in the early 19th century, when this was written, let alone in the early 17th century, when it's set). But what surprised me even more was the fact that the book's second heroine, the Indian Magawisca, is portrayed just as positively and humanly - really, the only difference in portrayal is that Hope rather than Magawisca gets the guy, and since she's the title character this is not surprising. Still, I was surprised at how well Magawisca was drawn, given that this is from the same era as James Fenimore Cooper. XD
Anyway, in my next entry will be an in-depth review (with pictures) of the wackiness that is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anime! (Yes, there is an anime. A sentai anime. Featuring Krang calling Shredder "Sawaki-chan." Look forward to it!)
Let's Positive Linking!
- AUGH WHY ARE THESE WOMEN LETTING A CAT NURSE? (Not worksafe.) D: D: D:
- Former gay prostitute runs for Texas legislature. Apparently he was a "power bottom, uninhibited hooker" who charged $200-600 a night. Hey, at least he'll probably be more honest that he'll screw you and take your money than most politicians are!
- Sudanese man forced to marry goat. My big question: if he has a goat barbecue, is that uxoricide? Or just tasty?
- Body snatchers sell stolen organs for transplants...including those of the Masterpiece Theatre host who recently died. (From
jokersama.) D:
- Un-Pimp My Ride. (From
jokersama.) Ah, VW, your ads are hit-and-miss, but when they hit they HIT. XD
