You know, my apartment in Iowa City is like a block away from an entire strip of bars. >D
Today was fun - went out to Borders to pick up a birthday present for my stepdad, then hung out with
rathershady and our former coworkers Jill and Victoria at Mike's Tavern. Oddly enough, though I've gone to school just a couple of blocks away for most of my life, It's the first time I'd ever been there. It is pretty much a college-student dive (and the fact that they had construction going on didn't help the classy ambience any). Still, it was fun to hang out there with everyone. Afterwards, we went to Governor Stumpy's - I'd dragged Vinnie there a couple of times, and Jill had stopped by for my graduation party, but Victoria hadn't been there before and I think she enjoyed it. And I'm fairly certain the one bite of lemon cake she ate for dessert made her a believer. >D
I've been glad I've been keeping relatively busy this week; it's done a pretty good job of distracting me. June is always a hard time of the year - the 12th was my dad's birthday (on which I didn't call him, figuring I'd wait till Father's Day, something I'll probably always regret), he died late on the 14th, and I heard about it on Father's Day (which was the 15th that year). So basically from the 12th through Father's Day is kind of teh suck. On Saturday I'm going down to Higginsville to visit the veterans' cemetery where my dad is buried (well, his ashes anyway). And hopefully that'll put an end to this difficult part of the year.
Also, my sister is coming up from Phoenix to visit in mid-July. It'll be nice to see her again, since I haven't seen her for a couple of years (not since right after Daddy died and I got back from England).
In cheerier news, some positive linking:
- A new King Tut exhibition has opened in L.A. I'm totally seeing this when it comes to Chicago (since that's only a 3-hour drive from Iowa City).
- This is an interesting article about gender and the brain. At least, I find this kind of stuff interesting. -_-;
- And stolen from
jokersama, the BBC's opinion on the Michael Jackson verdict. XD
Edit: Wow, my mouth is like lusting for strawberry. I had a strawberry smoothie earlier and a frozen strawberry margarita with dinner and my mouth is still "AUGH GIVE ME STRAWBERRY GRAR." But I have no strawberry-flavored stuff to give it. ;_;

Actually, once you move out to Iowa City I'll know two people living out there. Maybe I should come frighten you in person sometime. ;)

also, i have nothing else productive to say other than i read that as "there's a whole mess of strip bars near where i'll be living in Iowa." XD

and the strawberry lust, I KNOW IT WELL. i haven't had it hit me bad yet this year, but in the past? i've gone through whole pound boxes of strawberries dunked in sugar or on their own. i've eaten a box of strawberries as a meal before. believe me, i know. XD
(BTW, even though i haven't done much about them, for some reason the slugs haven't hit my berry patch too badly this year! :D probably cos it's a bit dryer in the patch than it was last year, and so it's not as slug-hospitable. XD already i've picked more berries from the patch outside this year than last, and there are still many more that are ripening on the vines. :9

(And I'm jealous of your strawberry patch - mine is relatively new, and so I'm just now starting to get a few little berries. Of course, I'm lucky to get even that, since my feeding schedule is erratic to say the least.)

And re: the bar thing, that's a college town for you. :D

I think it'd be fun to visit you there sometime T_T it's too bad Iowa's so far away now :(

And I think you're probably right about living more in the direction of the dorms. But I can't say for sure, given that my grasp of Iowa City geography is even more tenuous than my grasp of Kansas City geography. XD
