Well, never made it to the psychic fair. I don't feel too bad about it - while it would have been nice to see the crystal skull, this weekend has been exactly what I needed. I spent Saturday hanging out and chilling with friends, and today I woke up so late (since I didn't get to bed till after 5) I knew I wasn't going to make it in time to see the crystal skull.
So instead I had a relaxing, self-pampering kind of day. I finished up my new Mercedes Lackey Elemental Masters book, Phoenix and Ashes (verdict: better than The Gates of Sleep, not as good as The Serpent's Shadow or The Fire Rose). Then, since the day was so nice, I took a nice long walk to my local Walgreen's to pick up some medicine and stuff for supper, as well as a DVD (Forces of Nature, because I like Sandra Bullock) to watch this evening, and picked up a cherry slush on the way home.
Now, I realize this may not sound like a lot of fun to most, but this weekend with my parents gone has been really nice. You see, because I've got the freedom of not being under my parents' eye for a little while and have a chance to do things for myself (and possibly because of the "being able to get drunk" thing as well), I feel much more like "England me" than "American me." And just having the freedom to feel this way again is just immeasurably comforting - it's like, "I haven't ENTIRELY regressed back into my pre-England self! The other me is still in there somewhere!"
Anyway...as it happens, I'm going to be a member of the Kansas City Star book club pretty soon, and so yesterday I received the book under discussion - Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. So far, it seems to be about an autistic, British version of Encyclopedia Brown or something along those lines. While it's kind of weird so far, at least it hasn't gotten all uber-pretentious and self-congratulatory like so many mainstream literary novels do.
I'm probably going to make my famous pudding cake tonight, so maybe I'll muster up the motivation to do Cooking Photojournalism. If so, look for it later this evening.
