gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Shot in the head)
Two games that I am salivating over: Persona 4 and Valkyrie Profile: The Accursed One (hereafter VP:DS). (The VP stuff was announced a few days back with a screenshot, but the P4 screenshots are completely new.)

Gotta say, even though P4 has had very little of a graphical upgrade from P3, and Soejima's character designs are a little samey compared to P3's, I'm still super-pumped about this game. (But then, I really liked P3, even the much-maligned school-sim system and Mysterious Dungeon-like Tartarus.) I wouldn't mind if Shoji Meguro cut down a little on the BABYBABYBABY though...not that I dislike it, or even really got tired of hearing it, but I just really loved his DDS2 work and wish he'd do something a little closer to that for P4.

So FES next month, then P4 over here sometime early next year probably...sounds like a good Persona-year to me, though I always worry about games released near the end of a dying system, after the new one's already out (remnants of my SNES past). Atlus, please release Persona 4 even though it will be for the PS2! After all, the PS2 has a larger install fanbase than the PS3.

As for Valkyrie Profile, and for the DS no less...YESPLZ. Though I guess I'd better beat Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria first, huh. XD;

Still, tri-Ace has owned my soul since Star Ocean 2, so I'm anxiously awaiting this game. They've actually done quite a few of my favorite-ish games: the Star Ocean games, the Valkyrie Profile, Radiata Stories...so I have a feeling this one will be awesome as well. :D

Warning: completely arbitrary "best of" list ahoy!

...I figure it's late enough in the PS2's lifespan to look back on the games released for it as a whole. And specifically, my chosen genre of game, the RPG. So, bored and fueled by cinnamon bears, I am making a top ten list of the best PS2 RPGs ever.

My list (spoilers ahoy) )

Okay! Making this post was one of my goals for the weekend; others are making a post about cracktastic yaoi manga (the one I've been promising for like 3 months), posting about how the manga Princess Princess changed my life (...kinda), posting some Old English riddles that [livejournal.com profile] enkiae was asking about, playing a shitload of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana, and watching a shitton of Doctor Who (they tried to deliver my megaset today but I was off teaching, so I get to go to the Post Office and pick it up tomorrow, whee!).

Well, my brother has booked our European vacation sensation. Our itinerary )

Honestly, even though we will be crossing some of the same territory we saw last time we went Eurotripping (during Christmas break of my year in England), I don't mind at all - all the Italian cities are new, and I certainly have no problem seeing Lucerne and Paris again, since I loved both of them last time and there's plenty I didn't see in both cities (and it will be nice to be in Lucerne not on Christmas Day, so things will actually be OPEN). And of course I want to live in England eventually, so even though I've seen lots of London before I know I won't get tired of it (and then I'll hopefully be visiting Colin, so I'll get to see a new part of England too!). I'm not entirely certain where I'll be staying in England, but I've been checking out inexpensive places to stay; fortunately in London you can pretty much get anywhere from anywhere, so it really doesn't matter that much, though for sentimental value I kind of want to stay in Kingston. :D

And BY GOD I AM GOING TO HAMPTON COURT THIS TIME...I lived like 5 minutes away from it for 9 months and was too lazy to go see it until the very end, despite being a huge Tudor freak and it being a major Tudor site. Then at the end ended up not being able to go as I'd planned because I had to leave a week and a half early to go home for my dad's funeral. (Another reason I'm glad I'm going is that it'll be nice to have my most recent memories of England not be sad and tragedy-stricken.)

...In unrelated news, I've finished my Beowulf paper and final (verdict: paper not bad but not fabulously intelligent either, final didn't go great but could have been a lot worse), and now all I have to do is finish my grading for my Rhetoric class and implement the suggestions my prof gave for finishing my seminar paper. The problem, of course, is that my seminar paper is now moving at approximately 1/10000 the speed of molasses. I'm hoping to finish it tonight though, or tomorrow at the latest. (I'm also going to start my grading tonight; it'll be so nice to not have to focus on writing amazingly fabulous comments except for the few who specifically gave me a SASE or asked for comments. ZOMG SO MUCH FASTER.)

Man, I'm so ready for this semester to be over. Unfortunately my summer class starts Monday, and I've already been assigned reading for the first day of class. This is not an auspicious beginning. D:

Let's Positive Linking!
- MadTV does The Wizard of Oz. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Actually quite good; the best part is that the chick playing Dorothy totally has the Judy Garland intonation down, even when she's throttling Glinda or calling the Tin Man a homo. XD
- The opening movie for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War. ZOMG DO WANT
- Squeenix announces Star Ocean/Star Ocean 2 remakes for PSP, Star Ocean 4 in development. As a confirmed tri-Ace whore, my immediate response was to start salivating like Pavlov's shota dog.
- The most offensive piece of statuary I've seen in a while. Honestly, is this what they think all comic readers want? (Of course we must all be male, because we all know girls CAN'T read comics, and if they do it doesn't count.) Seriously, it's like June Cleaver meets Daisy Duke. Now, MJ is a sexpot, but still! The exposed cleavage, the fact that she's barefoot (though not pregnant, that might prevent her from having a26GGG figure), the VISIBLE THONG, the PEARL NECKLACE...WHAT THE FUCK. (And we're not even going to get into the fact that I'm sure, given the crap Spidey puts that costume through, that I'm sure it's machine washable, and that MJ is practical enough to do so.)
- Bobby Brown claims Osama Bin Laden wants to kill him and marry Whitney Houston. Yes, you read that right. On the plus side, Osama x Whitney would be an AWESOME COUPLE. XD

For some reason I'm feeling very nostalgic today - not for anything in particular, really, just for about everything. It's kind of a weird feeling, because normally I can put a specific name to nostalgia - like "oh, remember England?" or "oh, I remember that trip to Memphis!" But now it's just kind of a generalized nostalgia for all of my various past experiences. It's weird.

In related news, I just put together a ginormous playlist of all my '80s (and a little '70s) soft-rock. It is the AWESOME PLAYLIST OF DOOM! *insert silent squeeing here*

Okay, um, today was kinda eventful. I was part of a theory study group looking at the exam questions for our final, then Amy (one of Ben's friends who lives up here) took me out grocery shopping and to get some boots so that I'm a little more snow-ready. Afterwards, we picked my truck up from the shop and took it home. But having spent all day around other people, I'm feeling kinda lonely. But I keep telling myself that I'm getting ready to go home next weekend and spend most of a month around other people, so I should enjoy the solitude while I've got it. XD

Let's Positive Linking!
- Gay marriage passes in Britain, yay! Hahaha, the Pink Pound. XD
- Crimes against kids increasing in Japan. I like how even though their crime rate has risen 50% in the last four years, that just means they're up to 30 murders a year. FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.
- The straight dude's guide to Brokeback Mountain. (From [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717.) *refrains from a South Park "gay cowboys eating pudding" joke because they've all been made in the months since this movie was announced*

Edit: Remember the Escapist article I linked to a couple days back? Well, the author has put up a response to the criticisms, and it makes him sound like even MORE of a smug, pretentious fuck. If the Escapist article was irritating, this will make you want to either gouge your eyes out at this guy's ego or slap the fucktard silly over his puerile posing. ([livejournal.com profile] enkiae and I have been pointing and mocking and snarking over AIM all evening; it's fun, you should try it!)

Edit 2: Holy crap, a Tri-Ace double whammy: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth have both been announced! The first is a sequel to Valkyrie Profile, only one of the best games for the PSOne (which I bought when it first came out, gave it to my sister a few years later when she was complaining about not having enough games, and then she promptly turned around and sold her game system and games for a pittance, AUGH); the second is a remake of the original for the PSP. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to do the Mexican Rain Dance Localization Dance. And while I'm at it, I'll ask for a domestic release for Devil Summoner PSP too.

Edit 3: Oh no, Eugene McCarthy and Richard Pryor died. ;_;

Edit 4: Okay, by popular request (or just because I felt like putting it up): [livejournal.com profile] enkiae's and my snark over Chris Crawford's articles (both the original Escapist article and then his rebuttal posted on his own website which is linked above).

Well, I finally beat Radiata Stories - the ending wasn't great but wasn't horrible either, the way I hear the nonhuman path ending is - and now I'm playing through the bonus dungeon. (Of course it has one - it's a tri-Ace game.)

Postgame spoilers )

Oh, and completely unrelated: remember that cracked-out fandom pairing meme from a week or so ago? Well, I did a couple of crappy drawings at the time inspired by the bizarre crossover pairings in said meme. I'm hauling out one of them because, since it has Maya in it, it might conceivably be considered a Persona artwork (which [livejournal.com profile] jokersama has requested - I'm working on some REAL Persona artwork, but till then this'll have to do).

So, without further ado...

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Default)
The Suikoden V trailer...there are no words. WANT SO BAD

Seriously, between the fact that they play Jowy's Theme from Suikoden II in the trailer, the return of characters like spoilers ), characters that seem likable, and lots of angst and costume changes (the hero dresses like McDohl at one point), and this game is a must-get for me. (Like every other Suikoden game...damn you, Konami, for making such great games!)

Anyways, I've been playing more Radiata Stories as well. The big break in the game came up - at a certain point in the game you have to choose between two paths, the human and the nonhuman. Why this is SO HARD (with spoilers) )

Anyway, I suppose I'd better get back to multitasking on my homework. (I'm currently trying to play Radiata Stories while reading Chaucer's "The Miller's Tale"...IN MIDDLE ENGLISH. Actually, it's working out better than I thought it would. XD)
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Default)
Welp, today was kind of a wash academically. For my Romantic Lit class this morning, we had to read Northanger Abbey, Blue-Beard (a Gothic play), both versions of Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", and Coleridge's "Christabel". I got through all of it but Christabel, because I ran out of time and I'd read it and "Mariner" before (I wanted to focus on the ones that I hadn't read before). But guess what the professor decided to spend quite a bit of time talking about, followed by calling on those who hadn't contributed? So I pulled some BS out of my ass and hope that it sounded halfway intelligible (I think she bought it). Still, I worry.

On the other hand, in my Chaucer class today I was not only fully prepared, having done all the reading, but actually spoke in class! Several times! (Wooo, go me!) And the things I said were even marginally insightful! Of course, it helped that for a large portion of that time we were talking about homoerotic subtext in the Knight's Tale, because (as befitting someone who lists "literary slash" as an LJ interest) I can find gay subtext in everything from Jane Austen to Agatha Christie.

(And yes, Poirot and Hastings are totally getting it on, as distasteful as I find the concept of Poirot getting it on with ANYONE.)

More about Radiata Stories, if I haven't bored the hell out of you yet - mild spoilers when talking about story characters )

Let's Positive Linking!
- You can't catch me, I'm the Ninjabread Man! (From [livejournal.com profile] shinkun.) OMG MUST GET
- Nightmare City. ...I have no words.
- I thought spending the last couple of days on GameFAQs message boards had taken away all my faith in humanity. But no, then I had to go on the IMDb message board for The Constant Gardener and read arguments about why Rachel Weisz flossed her ass with a towel in a five-second scene. XD
- Some AWESOME street art. (From [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717. It's not my fault, they both have Crane icons!)
- Digital Devil Saga 2 has a soundtrack as a preorder bonus. DAMN J00 ATLUS T_T

Also, a news article from here; the IMDb news rotates daily, so I'm posting a copy of the article in the cut.

Well, I've been playing more Radiata Stories. (Reading for class? What reading?) Still enjoying it immensely - I've recruited about fifteen of the 177 (!) possible playable characters. I never thought I'd see a game that beat the Suikoden series for number of characters, but sure enough here it is. XD

Anyway, in the social arena, Thursday night a whole bunch of us first-year grad students went to dinner and a movie together. We ate at Thai Flavors (which is where the department took us when I visited in April) - I wanted chicken satay, but they were all out so I figured I'd try tofu satay, since I'd never had tofu before. Blech. I took like two bites, chewed, and took a pass on the rest. Even the peanut sauce couldn't save it. (Methinks tofu is not for me.)

Then we went to see The Constant Gardener, with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. It was really good, though a massive downer - though I'm glad I saw it, it's not the sort of movie I'd ever go see on my own. It's the same reason I haven't seen Hotel Rwanda - when I look to rent a movie, I look for something fun and enjoyable, not something where when the credits roll I feel like slitting my wrists. x_x

Let's Positive Linking!
- Oh boy, this one's a real nutter. Look, lady, you have not had sex/married Sephiroth on the astral plane...accept that and move on with your life. Maybe try to make it with someone who, actually, y'know, EXISTS? (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
- A scary article on the less-than-helpful Katrina rescue efforts. (From [livejournal.com profile] gedrean.)
- A creepy creepy article on a Katrina detainment camp refugee camp, and other confirmation that tends to lend it credulity. (Both from [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon.)
- And, in the same vein, a Denver Post article that also talks about the impenetrability (in or out) of these camps.

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (RAISE TEH ROOF WOOO)
After I finished classes and meetings today, I stopped by Gamers just on a whim to see if they had Radiata Stories in. (For the uninitiated, it's the new game from Tri-Ace, makers of the Star Ocean series and Valkyrie Profile.) And lo and behold, even though the release date isn't until tomorrow they did!

...oh my God, I'm like an hour into it (if that) and I already frickin' LOVE this game. The storyline and presentation are hilarious, and the characters all seem likable and quirky and, yes, I've laughed my ass off like three times already.

Impressions that I guess might be mildly spoilery for the first hour, if you're super-spoiler-paranoid )

I'm so looking forward to playing the hell out of this game.

I'M FEELING THE TRI-ACE WUBBLES, OH YES. Also, I totally need a Jack Russell icon.
