gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Mellow dude)
For some reason I've become completely obsessed with Scooch's "Maybe Tomorrow" after hearing it in this tribute video to the Second Doctor from Doctor Who. I literally CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO IT...I blame its peppiness! (I am weak vs. peppy, as many of you know.)

If you're wondering, this song is a British pop cover of Terry Bush's original, which may inspire nostalgia in those who are old enough to remember, as it was the theme song to the Canadian 70s kids show The Littlest Hobo, featuring a dog that went around making friends with people.

Anyway, I'm taking a sick day today - I cancelled my lit class - because I am genuinely sick as a dog. (A dog with nasal passages which are oozing mucous, that is.) I feel kind of bad about it, but not TOO bad, because I'm really in no shape to be teaching today (I'm barely in shape to move today, let alone talk); mostly I'm just sad that this means we'll have to play catch-up later, argh. Here's hoping I'm feeling better by Wednesday!
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I think I have to lie down)
A few years back there was a kind of awesome BAFTA award-winning animation of Gawain and the Green Knight by a couple of Irish animation studios. It's quite gorgeously animated, in a stained-glass style, and shockingly quite true to the original. It has yet to be released on DVD, but fortunately someone has put it up on YouTube (part 1, part 2, and part 3). I'm sure it's way prettier in non-YouTube format, but it still looks pretty awesome...watch it if you're interested!

I'm feeling under the weather - sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, etc. - and have all day, so I'm not gonna do much but take some NyQuil and then zonk out. So in lieu of content, links!

Let's Positive Linking!
- This week's edition of Target: Women, yogurt commercials! (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Because all women love yogurt, especially middle-class white women who wear gray hoodies and are on diets!
- EPB: Emergency Party Button (from [livejournal.com profile] jokersama)...this is pretty awesome, complete with cheesy 90's dancepop, but I don't think I'd want it in my house. XD
- Is Levitol right for you? (From, you guessed it, [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Best (pseudo-)pharmaceutical commercial ever, and an example of how good Mad TV can be on the rare occasions when it's good.
- Bill O'Reilly is a frothing nutbag, but we all knew that already. (From [livejournal.com profile] ahebert.) Still, this is hilarious and worth a watch if you haven't seen it already.
- WOLL SMOTH AND FRONDS. I don't know why these never fail to make me laugh, but I always find them HILARIOUS. I just think it's too bad they haven't included the one Doctor Who one I've seen (ROS TOYLOR). XD

Edit: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jokersama, have some ROS TOYLOR. XD

(spoilers for Doctor Who S2 finale, "Doomsday")

God, this clip never fails to make me sniffle. DAMN YOU RUSSELL T. DAVIES

Today was another no-go. I do think I've improved some since yesterday, though; after walking the two blocks to Kum'n'Go for Diet 7-Up and back yesterday, I felt weak as a newborn kitten, but when I did the same thing today, I felt tired but not nearly as bad. Also the congestion has cleared enough that I actually got most of a decent night's sleep last night, and a nap today, so I think I'll be in better shape tomorrow.

At least I'm hoping I am, as I can't exactly cancel my Rhetoric class two times in a row; fortunately, even if I am feeling like crap, all I have to do is teach in the afternoon and then handle a Speaking Center shift in the evening (I traded shifts with my coworker Kim, so she took mine this morning and I'm taking hers tomorrow evening). Fortunately, the evening shifts tend to be pretty quiet, so I'm not too worried it'll be too much to handle.

Thursday is going to be hell though. 9:30 in the morning to 8 at night, I'd better as fuck be back up to something resembling normal by then (especially since I have both a final exam and a quiz in German that evening). After that, all I have to do is teach on Friday, and then WOOHOO SPRING BREAK...I can't wait!

Edit: Also, because [livejournal.com profile] t3andcrumpets asked her flist to publicize it, y'all in the NYC area might want to think about going to Kristin Chenoweth's concert to benefit research on the rare disease ACD (alveolar capillary dysplasia). She was sparked to do this after her West Wing co-star NiCole Robinson (who played Margaret) lost her month-old son to ACD. And Chenoweth has said she'll continue doing these concerts until they find a cure, so y'all in other cities might want to keep an eye out if she does more.

Well, I had to miss class today; I woke up after a bad night and not only did I sound like a frog with emphysema, but I also had that nasty seal-bark cough you can sometimes get with respiratory stuff. I e-mailed my profs and my students, and hunkered back into bed for a while, since I'd only been able to get maybe three and a half hours of solid sleep last night.

I still feel pretty crappy now, which makes me less than optimistic about tomorrow, since mornings are my worst time and I generally tend to feel better in the afternoon/evening; but I don't even really feel up to going to my evening class tonight. I've e-mailed my boss at the Speaking Center and let her know I may be out sick tomorrow (to give her a heads-up), and I'm feeling pretty iffy about even trying to make Old Norse (which IS optional, after all).

...God, I hate being sick. It seems like I've felt worse every day rather than better; I'm hoping today was the nadir and tomorrow I'll start feeling better and won't have to miss.

Tonight I am going to settle in under a blanket and watch Hot Fuzz, in the hope that laughter will indeed prove the best medicine.
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I wanna crawl into a grave)
Things I didn't like today:

1) Daylight Savings Time (spring forward, my ass);
2) going for my cheap pizza slices at the Airliner and only being able to eat 1 1/4 slices due to sucky congestion filling my stomach with mucus (good for my waistline, but my tastebuds were sad);
3) having to trek to the library and go through scholarly journals (though I was amused when I was leafing through to see an article about penile problems in the Norse sagas).

Now I have to prepare to teach tomorrow, do my German homework, and try to get something in the way of spring cleaning done. Here's hoping I feel better tomorrow; today I had a nagging headache most of the day, and enough congestion (in spite of Sudafed) that I had to be a mouth-breather all day.

...why couldn't I have gotten sick during spring break, when I could stay at home drinking 7-Up and watching Doctor Who all day with no guilt whatsoever? D:
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (I think I have to lie down)
Argh, I woke up this morning and seem to have come down with some kind of sinus plague. And I thought I might make it through the whole winter without getting sick. D:

Originally plans for today were to go to [livejournal.com profile] lordtravis and [livejournal.com profile] teachingmusic's for their baby Liam's first birthday party, but revised plans are to lie in bed and attempt to not suffocate on my own mucus. D:
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (O RLY?)
Well, the progress of the plague continues...it's seemed a little better today, but I might just be imagining it. If it's still around tomorrow, I'm just gonna call the health center and see if I can get in, since I need to go over and get blood tests to get my meds renewed anyway (which I was supposed to do today, but given the fact that it was freaking SNOWING I figured I did not need to be walking two and a half miles in the snow/sleet/freezing rain and the wind in my current condition).

...Man, I really want to get better soon, though. It's hard to concentrate enough to get any work done when you're Sudafed-stoned. D:

Let's Positive Linking!
- Guitars and bears and tanks, oh my! (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Basement Jaxx has some awesomely fubar music videos, and this one set in Soviet Russia is one of the most WTF.
- Howard K. Stern hires Ramsey parents' lawyer. Yeah, that'll convince the people who believe you killed anna nicole that you didn't.
- Have some well-written Devil Wears Prada femslash. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Despite not having seen the movie or read the book, I thought it was a pretty good fic, especially since there's so little femslash out there. (It's Meryl Streep x Anne Hathaway, for the record.)
- Possible best AMV evar? Seriously, the syncing-up of the music and the action (perfect lip-syncing, even) alone is completely awesome. This one is similarly good. (Both from [livejournal.com profile] dosetsu.) I've been wanting to see this anime ever since reading an FST description about of it that made it sound like the crackish nonsense I'd probably like, so maybe this will be my impetus to check it out (after finals).

My current videogame, which I've gotten to play very little of lately (though I did play a bit today), is Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia. And it is full of innuendo. (The sad part is, that's actually one of the more innocent bits of innuendo in this game.)
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (WOES I AM SO HELPLESS AND EMO)
Well, my brief friends-only experiment is over; I don't think any of my students have found me, and honestly at this point I don't really care if they find me talking about sparkly videogame buttsex (which is now my set phrase to describe the contents of my LJ). And I would like my friends from the W.C. to be able to read this, despite most of them not being on LJ. So from now on, my journal will be back to the way it was before this year; only sensitive stuff (so, stuff that's really personal, or stuff about teaching) will be friends-locked, and the rest will be public.

Am I going to go back and un-flock posts from this year? Hell no, I'm too lazy. I'm just glad I never got around to flocking everything from before last summer.

In other news, I still feel like shit. And since I got nothing done yesterday except sniffling and zoning out on Sudafed, I have no Old English translation done for today; looks like I may be skipping that class. ...God, and that's the second time this semester - in three weeks, even; that makes me feel so hypocritical, after getting so pissed off earlier this morning about my student who never comes to class (though to be fair, I do make it to Old English almost all the time!).

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who (Love and peace)
Hope y'all had a happy Thanksgiving, with lots of turkey (or tofurkey, if that's more your speed) and pie of some sort.

The bus ride down to KC was a little less traumatic than my last one (of course, I'm like 7 years older than I was then so that's probably not surprising). It did run long, though, so while I was supposed to get in at 11:15 I actually got in at 11:45, which made things kinda rough on my poor parents.

Being back at home feels kinda weird - I'm no longer used to it, so everything seems different and smaller and more cluttered and it all smells kinda like cat pee (the unfortunate result of having so many cats), but overall I'm still pretty happy to be home. On Sunday my parents took me to a lot of the places I'd been missing during my time in Iowa (finally, a store with a decent manga selection again!); I spent Monday and Tuesday with my mom, hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] rathershady and [livejournal.com profile] courters28 in the evenings, which was really nice (though Courtney, I think I picked up whatever you were sick with); Wednesday I went over to visit my stepmom and stepbrother and baby brother (I know I say this every time I see him, but Lance really is the cutest kid EVAR); yesterday my parents and I went down to Topeka for Thanksgiving with my aunt and cousins, which was fun (though slightly marred by the first signs of my illness); and today I'm full-blown sick, working on my Chaucer draft in a Sudafed PE-induced haze. But there's leftover French Silk pie, so it's all good.

However, since our car is having some coolant trouble, and it's been certified for in-city and even to Topeka but the mechanic couldn't guarantee no problems en route to Iowa and back, my stepdad's gonna drive me up in my truck. Which kinda sucks, because I think my mom would like to come back up to Iowa City, but she's probably not up to the drive anyway (she's just finished recovering from the nasty fall she took on her LAST visit to IC) and this means we can take up some bigger stuff, like bookcases and an endtable and boxes of books and clothes and stuff, which is DEFINITELY good.

Also, I'm looking at going to see Pride and Prejudice with the 'rents this evening, so hopefully impressions of that will follow soon.

Edit: Also, because it's now seasonally appropriate, have some horrific Grinch/Max pr0nfic courtesy of aff.net. Dr. Seuss was never so disturbing! :D
