- So this is what Homeland Security is devoting their resources to. And this. Nice to know our government is watching out for us so...thoroughly. >_<
- Haha, what a great newspaper error. Apparently there's a student newspaper even worse than the U-News! XD
- British atheist looks at Colorado Springs megachurch. I do agree with the original poster that the British guy is just dripping with audible scorn, and actually gets kinda heated (though I imagine if you're a British person unused to wacky American fundamentalism, you might get kind of exasperated in a "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU SO STUPID" way). Sadly, the pastor does have a point in that the British guy totally does come off as arrogant (even though he's right). On the other hand, AUGH but said pastor is creepy and smarmy - and also apparently ill-informed as to what the Nuremberg trials actually were. XD
- Man, the day I win the lottery I'm totally going to buy a house just so I can build one of these. Of course, I suppose I'd actually have to PLAY the lottery first. XD
- Haha, this completely not worksafe music video is amusing! It's especially amusing given the production of Love's Labors Lost that I recently saw was set in the same time period, so now I'm imagining the King of Navarre asking the Princess of France whether she takes it up the ass. XD
- Apparently aliens are stealing schoolgirls' slippers. God, I love the Japanese (in general, and Mainichi Wai Wai in particular). What would we do for fubar without them?
- This is SO HOW IT IS. (From [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717.) Which reminds me, I need to do my taxes and FAFSA this week. D:

Also, I got my Valentine's Day BPAL order. And promptly realized that, with the new frimps added to my collection, I now have around ~40 imps that I have yet to try. (I've tried all my bottles, but the frimps just pile up!) So I figured I was overdue for some reviewing. >_<

- An awesome Street Fighter comedy sketch. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) If you've ever played SF2, this will be hilarious. I especially like the accidental Dragon Punch, and the hating on the Hurricane Kick. XD

- Dammit, the human body should not move like this! I'm amused by the fact that she totally moves like Voldo from Soul Calibur III (down to the floppy thing and the roll near the end of the video).
- If you haven't seen the South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet" - the one that can't be reaired because Tom Cruise is trying to sue - here's your chance. I especially liked the end credits. XD

OK, I totally feel like a ridiculous BPAL glutton, since I got three months' worth of orders this a week. (Part of it was that I was gone for a month, and then I guess they cleared up their backlog over the holidays. XD) But I'm now DROWNING IN BPAL...I have to do a crapton of reviews over the weekends so that I know which ones I like. (I'm highly amused by the fact that they sent Follow Me Boy as one of my frimps. XD)

Last night I had my first History of Western Letterforms class. It seems pretty cool - mostly focused on hands-on work, exploring doing calligraphy of various hands throughout the ages - but a little more work-intensive than I was expecting for an undergrad class. Now, admittedly, it's more fun to practice calligraphy than to read yet another scholarly article, but we're doing like three pages of calligraphy homework a week, and by page I mean "no margins chock full writing a crapload of stuff." And also, because we're trying to get things right, it's taking FOREVER - I spent most of class yesterday (about two hours) drawing basic Roman letters with pencil on graph paper and didn't even finish half a page, and we have to have three pages of it (plus another full alphabet) next week. You'd be surprised how hard it is to draw decent-looking versions of the letters we write EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN' DAY. D:

Oh, also, I finally found a used couch that's pretty nice and that they'd deliver (it's even a sleeper, and in a color I like) and so I should have it tomorrow morning. :D

Went to my first class today (Shakespeare), and it seems like it'll be cool. I like the teacher - Miriam Gilbert, I'd met her in Intro to Grad Studies last semester and she seems like a really cool lady - and of course the plays are always good. It was also nice to see a lot of my classmates who I hadn't seen in a month or so (especially since this is the class that like EVERY first year is taking, it seems - there are 23 people in it!). One downside to the class, unfortunately, was that my Norton Shakespeare is somewhere back in KC - I looked for it while I was home, but couldn't find it ANYWHERE. So I had to buy the Riverside Shakespeare. On the other hand, just two more and I'll have all the major scholarly complete Shakespeare books! :D

As I walked from class to the post office and then home, it started to snow lightly (like, just enough that you could see it), which was nice. Less nice was discovering that Tony's Grill, my favorite restaurant (probably because it's like two blocks away from my apartment) has stopped serving supper - they close after lunch at 3 p.m. and don't open again till the late-night rush at 10. O, where will I go to get cheap food and study? Maybe the Airliner? Or Taco Bell? Or maybe I'll try Happy Joe's Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor, which is right across the street from Tony's and which I should probably go to at least once just for the name.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] rathershady has posted pictures of our Colorado trip and so has [livejournal.com profile] courters28.

P.S. I command all of you to watch the Silent Hill trailer NOW. I hope the movie is good~~

However, I'd probably still better get to bed so that I can get my full ten hours before having to go in to class. So I will leave you with links!

Let's Positive Linking!
- Apparently the Brain (from Pinky and the Brain) was based on Orson Welles. Which homage I'd never realized before but now wonder how in the hell I missed it. XD
- A funny-ass song that anyone who's ever dated a gamer will find extra-hilarious. It starts off slow, but by the end I was laughing my ass off. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.)
- Even though the Donner Party is famous for cannibalism, apparently the Donner family itself didn't practice it. Which is good to know, I guess.
- Jack Thompson wants to ban Sims 2. Because apparently it provides a playground for pedophiles and has realistically rendered genitalia under the blur. (Which, no. I've seen screenshots with the anti-blur patch, and the Sims look like Ken and Barbie dolls.) Lord, what fools these zealots be...
- On the other side, here's a negative review of Narnia that bashes it for being too Christian. I have no problem with it bashing Narnia per se, or even for disliking the "religious themes," it's just that it seems kind of shriekingly, aggressively, reactionarily atheistic. It's like the moment this person heard that the writer intended it to be a Christian allegory, a little siren in her head turned on blinking "warning, belief approaching - FIRE TORPEDOES!" Especially when her main complaint is "C.S. LEWIS WAS CHRISTIAN AND THEY'RE PROMOTING THIS MOVIE IN CHURCHES!" Which, y'know, are both true, but kind of irrelevant to the movie itself.
(And really, as religious allegory it's kinda piss-poor - not only did I not notice it when I first read them as a kid, but even now I'm like, "wait, but if Aslan is Jesus how does that work if he's already the great king of the forest? Shouldn't he be like a lamb or a mouse or something meek?" So I don't quite understand how this reviewer got "OH MY GOD THEY'RE INCULCATING CHILDREN WITH EVIL CHRISTIAN VALUES" because, seriously, if that's the case? They're shockingly incompetent.)
...Also, according to this article 43% of Britons don't know what Easter celebrates. :O
- And while we're on the subject of assy critiques, here's one of a Jewish comic book that takes the opportunity to slam ALL graphic novels. Because apparently graphic novels are INCAPABLE of being an art form, despite the fact that they're combining words and pictures, both of which can be an art form on their own. I guess there must be some kind of chemical reaction when they come together that emits anti-artistic or possibly death rays, that's the only explanation I can come up with for such sheer idiocy.
- And finally on the "stupid review" front, here's a review from Orson Scott Card of Aeon Flux. The entire article is about how Aeon Flux is too much like the video game it's based on, which makes for a bad movie, and then moves out to a criticism of video games in general (though he does give props to Katamari Damacy). There's only really one problem with it: AF is not based on a videogame, but on a series of MTV shorts from the early (mid?) 90s. ...It's called research, Orson, you might wanna look it up. (And yes, I realize the logical problem inherent in that sentence.)

In case any of you have been wondering what this BPAL thing I and quite a few on my friendslist keep babbling about, or if you already know what it is but would like to be pimped to know more, here's your chance: BPAL for Newbies! (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] quikslvr for the link.)

Also, my work is progressing LIEK WOAH here in the computer lab. Which is unexpected but great. I've turned in my Romantic Lit final paper and now I'm just trying to finish up my Chaucer stuff, which is due at 5 (but I have a feeling I'll be finished before then). Then I can relax! Or at least focus on studying for my theory final and actually, y'know, get some sleep tonight! :D
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (I think I have to lie down)
Oh God, Diet Mountain Dew tastes like antifreeze. At least it has plenty of caffeine. I'd like to find a more pleasant way of ingesting caffeine, but I hate coffee. Maybe I should try No-Doz, though that always reminds me of the infamous episode of Saved by the Bell where Jessie gets hooked on caffeine pills. XD

In another startlingly true-to-life episode, a stressed-out Jessie resorts to caffeine pill abuse in order to manage her school work and committment to the singing trio with Kelly and Lisa. Ever the concerned friend, Zack tries to convince her to stop. The thrill of the pill proves too strong, however, and it is only after an emotional breakdown ("I'm so excited, I'm so excited, I'm so...scared!") that Jessie recognizes she has a problem.

BPAL: Tulzscha )

Also, something that irritates me: The Escapist's article on "women in games." Specifically, they've got this guy writing about women in games, who is officially full of shit. His half-baked, rudimentary use of evolutionary psychology to make such amazingly original statements as "women want to play games featuring social reasoning" and "the ideal women's game would be an interactive bodice ripper" irritate me SO MUCH. So apparently all the female gamers on my friendslist are actually some kind of freakish unwomanly mutants or something? (Since they enjoy games like Fatal Frame, which is clearly not about maneuvering through the world using your advanced social skills, but about KILLING SOME EVIL FUCKING GHOSTS WITH YOUR CAMERA BEFORE THEY KILL YOU.) His claims aren't entirely invalid; the Sims games were massive bestsellers, and those arguably center around socialization - but they sold so well because a helluva lot of guys bought the game as well as women.

Also, from [livejournal.com profile] enkiae: Old Grandma Hardcore. This old biddy ROCKS. Any grandma who plays Growlanser and Fatal Frame is A-OK with me. XD
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (Does Hanatarou have to choke a bitch?)

Er, yes, and more BPAL reviews. I added [livejournal.com profile] alchemylab back onto my flist - BIG mistake. gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (Pissed off Hot Pants)
First, some random stuff:

- Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ahebert!

- You know, it's ridiculous how consistently good the Suikoden albums are. (All like two dozen or however many of them there are.) I've been going on a downloading spree from the Galbadia Hotel videogame soundtracks download section. (They also have quite a few Megaten albums, including Punitive Dance, if any of y'all are interested and don't know about it already.) But seriously, Suikoden's had everything from Celtic to jazz to orgel (music box) to piano albums, and they're ALMOST ALL GOOD. x_x

I also like how some of them take songs I never particularly noticed in the original (like the piano version of the first Suikoden's "Dancing Girl") and rearrange it to the point where I'm like, "wow, that's actually a really pretty melody, I never noticed that before."

- I have discovered recently that I have phone phobia. In fact, I think I've always had it. I hate talking on the phone to people, and avoid it whenever possible. This is a completely general and impersonal thing - even when it comes to people I like very much and know very well and have no problem talking to in person, I always feel like I have trouble talking to them on the phone. And this is even more true for people I don't know particularly well - even if I'd be fine talking to them in person or by e-mail, on the phone I'm always an incoherent mess and it just gets bad.

So, in conclusion, phone conversations = TEH EBIL, and from now on I will try to engineer things so I have to have them as little as possible.

- Also, Saturday marked my return to IRC for the first time in a long while (like, since about halfway through my year in England). I hadn't realized, but I'd missed it! :O

- Food critic wins Bad Sex in Fiction award. At least he's much more graceful about it than that douchebag Tom Wolfe was. If you want to see his selection and the runners-up, go here. Marlon Brando's is horrible, but then there's the winner, which ends with the words "Like Zorro." XD
- A literary plagiarist is caught. And while I think what he did is deplorable, I'm irritated by the way the article's author uses that as a springboard to tar everyone he ever had any kind of dealings with. And while he may have a valid cricism about the guy favorably reviewing his friends' work, there's also the fact that the writing workshop these writers met at is a pretty good writing workshop, and so it's probable that yeah, they ARE all pretty good writers (though hopefully the others are more original). It's like people in the literary world (or who want to be in the literary world) who complain that the Iowa Writers' Workshop folks get published disproportionately highly, and claim that they're being favored somehow. When in actuality, it's probably that the Iowa Workshop takes a lot of the creme de la creme of young literary authors, so it's probably that they're just really good writers. (It's kind of like complaining that Ivy League graduates are disproportionately represented in political office, and so it must be a SINISTER PLOT BY A CABAL OF ACADEMICS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD when it's really just that the people who have the smarts and/or the money to go to Ivy League schools also have the smarts and/or the money to make it in politics.)

- Laurell K. Hamilton apparently pulled an Anne Rice a few months ago. For those of you who aren't familiar with LKH, she's the author of the Anita Blake series of vampire novels, which I hugely enjoyed until it basically became softcore porn. And for the record, I've always disliked Richard and I still thought she'd gone way overboard with the sex. (Her recent book even had Anita being tag-teamed by a wereleopard and a werewolf - who partially shapeshift in the middle of sex. Can we say "furry fetish?") Also, it's hard to believe that a published author can be so woeful at spelling. I mean, come on..."privaledge?" XD
- And a parody of one of her more recent books FOR TEH WIN. Sadly, this is not all that far off. XD
- And while we're bashing fantasy authors, a rant on Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind. Never read Goodkind (and after reading that, don't want to) but attempted to wade through the first Wheel of Time book and made it through like 50 pages before the snore-inducingness of it all made me give it up as a lost cause. Sounds like I'm not missing much. I know a lot of people who love the books though (like my mom, and I think [livejournal.com profile] rathershady reads them too), so YMMV.

Okay, first off, the game is EXACTLY what you'd think of if you imagine Suikoden crossed with Final Fantasy Tactics. Gameplay, battles, even the music sounds like a cross between FFT and Suikoden. (It's Suikoden motifs, but it sounds like it was arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto with the harp arpeggios and suchlike.) Also, if you've played SuikoIV, you will squeal like a schoolgirl - this game caters to the Suikoh0's nostalgia wang.

In which some familiar faces make a reappearance - SPOILARS, obviously )

Anyway, if you played and liked SuikoIV then pick up SuikoTactics! I'd totally say it seems less gay than the previous Suikodens except, well, it doesn't. XD

And a quiz:

You are Hinata Fuyuki. A little bland, quite calm,
and fairly reserved; you are the everyman. You
oftentimes fall victim to someone else's gags
or shenanigans. You've gotten used to it by
now-- putting up with goobers can actually be
fun sometimes. Besides, what's a little
harmless joking, right? So... can I have my
kero ball back?

Which Keroro Gunsou Character Are You?

Well, I kinda wanted Tamama, but I'll settle for Fuyuki. (I'm like a bastard cross between the two.)

- Okay, so Harry Potter teaches Satanism by perverting the Immaculate Conception. Featuring Voldemort as God, Harry Potter as Jesus, Lucius Malfoy as the Angel Gabriel, and Dobby as the evil stem cell researchers. (No, I'm not joking.) Oh, and let us not forget the Tempting Gay Ankle of DOOM.
- A Freudian slip? (Both this and above from [livejournal.com profile] enkiae.) And I bet you never thought you'd see me post anything Dragon Ball Z-related in this journal. XD
- SEXTERMINATE SEXTERMINATE. (From [livejournal.com profile] jokersama.) Yes, it is an article about Dalek pr0n. XD

gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (Mellow dude)
Wow, this is the first day where even I, with my Kansas City winter upbringing, went "Goddamn but it is cold today!" I guess we'll see whether I can handle the bitter Iowa winter, though I'll actually be in KC for most of next month and so hopefully won't have to deal with the worst of it.

I finally picked up my first official BPAL order from the post office today. (And let me tell you, slogging through the snow to do so was no treat.) So, yay! I ordered imps of Saint-Germain, Zephyr, Dorian, Endymion, Villain (which I've already tried and love), White Rabbit, Machu Picchu, Tenochtitlan, Whitechapel, Dragon's Milk, Centzon Totochtin, and Tezcatlipoca. And the lab threw in free imps of Hades and Black Rose! So, without further ado...

(Oh, and a disclaimer: I'm still slightly stopped up, so the ol' sniffer might not be working at 100%.)

BPAL: Tezcatlipoca )

Er, and a meme from various people on the flist:
What was your initial impression of my online persona? Did you think I was young or old, boy or girl, weird or funny? I am curious. And how did that impression change?

Let's Positive Linking!
- For you Persona 2 fans, there's now a "Xibalba is for Lovers" T-shirt. (Brought to you by the makers of "Republicans for Voldemort," a.k.a. the good folks at the funny webcomic Goats.)
- OMG BEST SMACKDOWN EVAR. (From [livejournal.com profile] enkiae.) We need to institute this for all jackassy customers, and (as Enki has suggested) possibly get Mr. T into the act too. XD
- Child's Play has added Children's Mercy in KC to their list. For those of you unfamiliar with Child's Play, it's a charitable project (this is their third or fourth year, I think?) put together by Penny Arcade in order to give toys to children in hospitals. I figure I'll get something on the Children's Mercy wish list for them once my paycheck comes in on Thursday.
- When urban legends get deadly. Even though we as Americans are used to thinking that we hold the patent on racism, it can get kinda deadly in England - the (black) son of one of my stepdad's friends was killed in England about ten years ago or so in a hate crime. :(
- Link to a seminar on Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Sadly, even though I have plenty of literary analysis I SHOULD be reading I want to read this instead. x_x

OK, a set of BPAL imps I ordered like two weeks ago finally came yesterday - so, without further ado...

You scored as Serenity (from Firefly). You like to live your own way and do not enjoy when anyone but a friend tries to tell you that you should do different. Now if only the Reavers would quit trying to skin you.

Nebuchadnezzar (from The Matrix)

Serenity (from Firefly)

Moya (from Farscape)

SG-1 (from Stargate)

Bebop (from Cowboy Bebop)

Enterprise D (from Star Trek)

Galactica (from Battlestar: Galactica)

Millennium Falcon (from Star Wars)

Your Ultimate Sci-Fi Profile: which sci-fi crew would you best fit in? (pics)
created with QuizFarm.com

Yay, this was totally the response I wanted. XD

Why were the Millennium Falcon and Bebop crews so low though? And why in God's name did the Nebuchadnezzar crew tie with the Serenity crew for first? I'M NOT PRETENTIOUSLY PHILOSOPHICAL ENOUGH FOR TEH MATRIX

Let's Positive Linking!
- Wax On Wax Hoff. If you've ever wanted to wax David Hasselhoff, now's your chance. XD
- Village People policeman on America's Most Wanted. Ouch, this lends itself to so many cracks about "Y.M.C.A."... XD
- The George W. Bush version of the infamous "falling woman" Internet phenomenon. I thought some of you might find it cathartic. (Be aware you can drag him around using the mouse as well.)
- Britney does Broadway. Okay, and I thought Christina Applegate was a low point for the role... >_<
- The Wizard of Oz as Illuminati mind control. Okay, some folks need to take off the tinfoil Tin Woodsman hat and get a serious dose of reality.

Edit: Oh, and this is probably my last LJ post till I get home, so...I'll be getting into KC late tonight (like, 11:15 at night). So, see you KC-folk soon! :D
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (Distinctly suspicious)
The soft-rock station here in town is already playing Christmas carols. T_T

What happened to the good ol' days, when they waited until the day after Christmas to start? Or at least till like mid-November. Why do I get the feeling they started the day after Halloween? x_x

I have bought my bus ticket for Thanksgiving vacation - I should be getting in to KC late at night on the 19th. So, yay for being able to see everyone at home again! :D

- Visual illusions, woot! (From [livejournal.com profile] surlykitty.) I especially like the "angry man, neutral woman" one.
- Tom. Katie. 'Nuff said.
- Why you should pay attention in geography class. Now I feel bad for not paying as much attention as I should in my lit theory class. WHAT IF LITERARY THEORY CAN SAVE LIVES SOMEDAY? :O

Edit: While working on a Romantic Lit paper for tomorrow, I attempted to abbreviate Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story until I realized what it abbreviates to: ASS. XDDDDD

Edit 2: This is a must-see for all Keroro Gunsou fans, and really even if you're not one it'll be funny. (It's based on the first opening credits of that series.)

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] shinkun! May you never be eaten by demons!

I have a rant about [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_daily. (Which I suppose extends to yaoi fandoms in general, and isn't really anything new, but still bugs me.)

- Encyclopedia Dramatica. TNT LJ: WE KNOW DRAMA.
- IT company bans complaining. (From [livejournal.com profile] surlykitty.) I can't imagine that helps morale. XD
- Family loses home to Katrina, then son killed in Iraq. The mother's STILL waiting on a FEMA trailer, so she's understandably kinda pissed. :(
- K-Fed begins rap "career". Because apparently it's not fulfilling enough for Mr. Britney Spears to spend all his wife's money on PIMP tracksuits for their wedding and on crappy-looking manpris.
- Meet ELIZA. No, not Dushku, sadly; the computer Rogerian therapist from several decades back, that apparently fooled some people into thinking it was a real person. It's been replicated as a Java applet. Ask it about sexual deviancy for extra fun! :D
gogmagog: The Fourth Doctor from <i>Doctor Who</i> (Even Dumbledore loves BPAL)
Okay, it's time for random observations that have absolutely nothing to do with each other! :D

- Reading lit theory before bed? Not a good idea - it will give you fucked-up dreams. In addition to all the bizarre gender play and weird something*positive references, I ended up as a companion helper to the Postcolonial Power Rangers in their flying cars. WHAT THE FUCK.

- I saw the same Ultros sticker I mentioned before elsewhere in town, but this time right above it was a Chupon sticker. I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE MYSTERY FFVI STICKERER BUT I LOVE YOU

- I love the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children soundtrack, but where is Loz's victory theme ringtone? ;_;

- I love fall in Iowa. The weather's gorgeous, and we seem to have more trees that really change color vibrantly (like maples and this bush that I see everywhere that's turned a vivid jewel red) than in KC.

- I also love the fact that sales tax here is so low. It's like 5% (or possibly less), whereas I'm used to it being upwards of 10% in KC. x_x

And now, BPAL reviews!

BPAL: All Night Long )

Edit: Apparently Scooter Libby is yet another in the long line of smut-writing Republican politicians. (From [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon.) With some absolutely horrific turns of phrase! :D
